Back in the 1980s, when I worked for a trade union, Chris Hughton used to write a football column for a newspaper called Newsline, which was the paper of the WRP (the Workers Revolutionary Party, one of three Trotskyist groupings at the time alongside Militant and the SWP).  I remember the paper being sold on picket lines in the dark days of Thatcher.  Surely one of the few footballers to come out as overtly left wing.  Wonder what his politics are these days?

A number of successful managers are openly left wing.....Klopp self identities as a socialist.....Fergie life time Labour voter and trade unionist.....Big Sam a lefty as is Hughton. Plenty more that I've forgotten.

Who. Gives. A. ****?

Lee Johnson could be the political version of Mother Theresa.

I still wouldn't ever want to watch his brand of football again.

I appreciate that the sociological comparative comparisons go well over your head.

Just mentioned on SSN - all the presenter said, they would keep Bristol City fans informed on any news as soon as it comes in (words to that effect)!

According to Talksport just now, they were suggesting Chris Hughton to replace Dean Smith should Villa get relegated, as he would get them straight back up again .

It’s another appointment that gives us a sense of stability. I’d imagine he’ll serve at least 3 years no matter what happens. Manager pay outs are quite large so we’ve probably saved a wedge compared to other teams that go through 2/3 managers a season

Interesting you say “no matter what happens”.

I think we all expect Hughton to do well, but what would be the fan reaction if he spends a fair amount, but we finish 20th next season?

Would it be “Hughton Out!”, or would he get the benefit of time because he’s a big name with a great reputation?

When I think about the people managers I have worked with I think all of them are left leaning.

I think he’d get another season, at least.

Jock Stein (one of the great managers of all-time and Fergie's mentor) and Jack Charlton too.

If Margaret Thatchers corpse played 2 up front at home I'd be in favour.

Can we leave the politics out of it, no point, and always stirs up arguments.

Brings another meaning to getting bodies in the box...

No chance, she hated strikers.

We need to get him in asap don't we. I don't feel confident with potentially Villa and Watford or Bournemouth going down. I know he might not currently fit their 'style' if you like but clubs can change their approach after relegation. I am also worried so worried that the forest manager might get sacked but I haven't read too far into that so probably should. Whoever it is I hope they get given at least half the time LJ did.
