So do you think if they were genuinely serious about Chris Hughton, they’d be pratting about and interviewing seven other candidates?

Due diligence is one thing, but these interviewees aren’t unknown people, so if the club have acted professionally, they should have already had plenty of info on each candidate.

If they’re the names we’ve heard on here, then I think we’re just taking the piss out of CH and we’re desperately looking for someone else.

If that’s the case, I’d seriously question the path this club are being taken down.

He comes across as a very intellegent bloke and I’m sure he’d be pragmatic enough to work with any restrictions due to Covid, as every club will have the same pressures next season.

Apparently he didn’t have huge budgets at Brighton and had an eye for some bargains.  Let’s be fair, they’re a similar sized club to us, so they could manage what he needed.

So as for your last paragraph, with the growing evidence we’ve seen, of this club constantly failing to acknowledge the importance of a proven manager or head coach,  I’ll be drawing the opposite conclusion to you on that one!

He might not have been paying out huge transfer fees, but from figures quoted elsewhere on OTIB his Brighton's wage bill in their promotion season was  over £45m when ours was in the region of £20m!

It is subjective, but I'd think it's more important for the future of the club to consider and act on the basis of how the Board defines it than a bunch of us on here!

And views on what constitutes being serious about promotion are equally subjective; I just don't buy the idea that the Board and the powers that be in the club aren't serious about that. They may have a different view on how we get there, and how sustainable it will be once we get there, but that doesn't make their view wrong and the view of anyone on here right.

All good points but I will just say one thing in reply.

This club has had 40 years to make this step-up, so I admire your optimism that their decision making is the right one to get us there, as history certainly suggests otherwise!

Hughton should be announced this week if we were serious about taking that next step,

Anyone other than him and I believe they would be under pressure from the first game as well as fans ending up very frustrated with Ashton etc

I hope it’s all done regarding Hughton and we’re just waiting until next week to announce him but it all just seems to have gone very stale after all those posts and reports Thursday

2 promotions from this league and is said to believe to be interested in the job...it’s a no brainer and if the board cannot see that then I seriously question their ambitions

Be interesting to know if that figure us accurate, but very big if it was.  Also begs the question if true, how can a club like Brighton manage it, but we can’t?

Brighton’s budget was the biggest of the non-parachute clubs.

Thats not a reason to not go for him, just that Brighton were very well backed in his two full season in the Champ.

They pushed FFP to the limits and had they not gone up, would have had to scale back massively that summer.  A £7m loss the year before meant it was only by using FFP allowances that BHA stayed within the 3 year £39m allowance.

Unless my memory fails me, I think it was reported that they had a cumulative debt of over £100m.

In any event the figures you quote certainly show that they did not get promoted on the cheap, as some seem to think.

I think there is something wrong with the club's recruitment policy. It seems clear to me that SL and the board would be just happy with a Ryan Lowe/Lee Johnson type head coach, that's more control for them, keeping the structure the same, and obviously more cost effective. I am sure if Lee Johnson was approached by a Premier League club earlier on this season then the board would've happily appointed Dean Holden or Jamie McAllister up as his successor.

I think the quality of the squad is at the stage where it needs a firmer control over it and a clearer understanding and discipline, sadly all of which have been missing this season. You only have to look at Cardiff as an example of players deemed nor good enough perhaps for us yet who is in the play offs?

Amazingly I think the general consensus amongst fans is that a strong willed coach who's "been there and done it" is needed. So there's the problemand it will always be there.

My concern is that Hughton's agreed to become the next head coach but that the board are now insistant or meddling on him utilising the current coaching set up to save money which on evidence of the last few matches is plainly past it's sell by date. So effectively being asked to deliver success with one arm tied behind your back.

When I think of strong willed managers I immediately think of Cotts and although his stubbornness was ultimately his downfall, look at the success of historic magnitude  he brought to the club.

Why can't the board see it????

.... because it doesn’t just SAVE money, it GENERATES it.
Whatever ones opinion on what happened on the pitch this season, we are one of a minority of clubs which made a financial profit from the player marketplace.
we are well within the FFP rules.
why would SL throw caution to the wind and relinquish control to a ‘strong’ manager, when the current setup has not done badly to-date?

I’m playing devils advocate here btw - I just want to see City in the Premiership, whereas although SL might want that too, his first priority (understandably) is the financial security of his business interests.

8 full interviews in the modern age?? If true, and we know the source of that snippet, it's bizarre, antiquated, inefficient, over-indulgent behaviour.

Actually it can happen quite rapidly if the Club have done all their homework well in advance in identifying who they might appoint next, especially if such a person is available.

Ah interesting. So if I'm reading the accounts right, on wages:

2010/11 (L1): £.6.9m

2011/12 (Champ): £13.2m

2012/13 (Champ): £18.9m

2013/14 (Champ): £18.0m

2014/15 (Champ): £18.3m (Hughton joins in Dec 2014)

2015/16 (Champ): £24.1m

2016/17 (Champ): £35.4m

2017/18 (Prem): £67.8m

2018/19 (Prem): £88.2m (Hughton leaves May 2019)

Could probably relax a bit over next 2 seasons if FFP goes to a 4 year cycle as a one off.

Apologies for my ignorence on this one, but how did they stay within the allowable 3 year ffp limit of 39m, when they made a 23m loss in 2016 and 36m in 2017?  Did they make a very large profit in 2015?

Can anyone direct me to where it confirms 8 being interviewed. Maybe Ashton said it n I missed it.

Whatever all may have been agreed Thursday but still has to be registered with efl, conveyed to those who need to be advised before public announcement.

If there are 8 candidates we can be assured there are probably 3 or 4 who could well do the job. CV's are fine as is their record o date - but it says very little about how the candidates see their future and the clubs future as a complete set up. This is particularly in the, present climate where all the candidates will need to express their intentions re reduced fan base, reduced income not only from attendances but also peripheral income. Combined it is a, completely different scenario any manager has been asked to face. I think it is almost certain that all clubs maybe apart from the top 5 or 6vpremier teams will be holding complete reviews and making sure their resident managers agree on the new structures. All takes time.

There are rules you have to follow in employing someone employment law the new Rooney rule (I think that's in now)

The paper work it just doesn't happen over night,

The way some are acting is if we just got relegated to the conference or been made bankrupt its ******* stupid
