Just heard some of the Norwich fans on the radio saying he has come across as a disinterested arrogant bastard who blames everyone else for the club being so poor this season.  I am sure we would all accept this though...........

Sounds like another manager, who got sacked last Saturday.............

Highly unlikely Norwich will sack him I'd have thought.

They hoped to survive but were budgeting for relegation...mandatory 50% wage cuts built into contracts if relegated.

Do you know that for a fact at Norwich? It's not the case at all clubs or written into all players contracts.

Reports suggest the Norwich board aren't too fussed about being relegated because they've bagged a load of money and will go again next season knowing their budget will be more than double 90% of clubs in the Championship.

As for Farke, and the much vaunted Stuart Webber, questions have to be asked as to why they thought continuing to play like they did in the Championship would work in the Premier League. It failed, badly.

6th worst finish in Premier League history.

Happy to research it further but sure I read it earlier- it would make sense, well-run club.

They budgeted for the drop- obviously staying up would've been great but I'm pretty certain they anticipated relegation as rather likely...as such wage differentials should've been built into the contract. Think they'll be targeting top 6 next year however, official target!

Quite possible to transfer styles, albeit tweaked. Varies by club! They had hefty injuries at CB earlier in season which didn't help...always thought they were a man light in CM though. Lack of signings did them few favours too but then as a self-funding club model...

Perhaps the two things are linked.

You only have to be better than three other teams - why wholesale change your style of play (and probably have to recruit expensively to do it)?

OK it didn't work out but it could be looked at as a low risk gamble if you're already somewhat accepting being a yoyo?

They start off in the Championship with a very strong and settled side with a style of play that got them promoted before.  They can add a bit of star quality and bounce back.

Perhaps further to that, strengthen a bit more and look to consolidate this time if they bounce straight back. Like Burnley, or West Brom- until the latter lost their way.

Personally I wouldn’t want him.

The way to survive for teams getting promoted to the Premiership is a tight defence. Both Sheffield United and Wolves give away very few goals. That means less pressure on their forwards to score lots to get results. It may not be pretty but it’s effective. Wilder’s team has the third meanest defence in the Premier League, which means that they still have a positive goal difference even though they have scored at roughly 1 goal per game.

Even when Norwich played well in their promotion season, it was very much about their forwards, and they still conceded quite a few goals. That isn’t going to work in the Premier League and they needed to bring in at least one experienced central defender, much like Alan Dicks brought in Norman Hunter, probably the most important signing in our time in the old First Division. That they didn’t then affects everyone else, including Pukki, whose form has disappeared.

Their best player recently has been Cantwell, who I can see moving on during the transfer window, plus one or 2 of their other young players. If that happens, they may be financially better off, but more rebuilding might be needed.

I don't think they expected much more, they were probably going to be relegated anyway so why compromise everything you have built for the hope of a brief stint in the Prem?

Look at Swansea, they got to the prem with a defined philosophy and for a season or 2 it worked, and then the slow erosion of all they have built until they threw it all away to stay up, went down anyway and then ended up back in this league with a crap side.

Think Norwich will not compromise their philisophy even if they do make a change at the top, and go up and down a couple of times, without spending the earth and be in a position where they can go into the prem with a side that can play their way and compete without having to employ Pulis to desperately try and say up by kicking their way through games.

You can go up and spend insane money and still be crap ala villa and Fulham, and then come down and you might be OK.

Or you can go up with a bloody good manager and some serious cash and do well ala Wolves. Or just have a top quality manager and compete ala Sheff U.

I think the Norwich model has massive merit, but it also has risks too.  Financially they are going to really well placed to come back up, but...

...if several of their players get poached, e.g. Buendia, Pukki, Cantwell, etc...then you’ve got to get your recruitment spot on, plus they’ve got to settle straight away.

They've spent little.  Too little imho.

Sheffield United bought top Champ players (with something to prove), Freeman, McBurnie, etc, plus Mousset.  They were buying in preparation to come back up...if they didn’t stay up....but those signings gave them more hope.  Then being stable in January they bought Berge.  They wanted him in the summer but he thought it was risky with a newly promoted club.

Villa, have imho just gone about it the wrong way.  They’ve signed players who will want out when they get relegated.

Maybe their philosophy will never work in the Prem tho. They won the league last season so not sure why they should just accept relegation whilst play off winners Sheff U stay in the top half all season.

There's also no guarantee they'll be able to hang onto their best players and that presents risk in terms of being able to replace them adequately.

It will, it just requires better players than playing Pulis ball does, and those players cost a lot of money, not something that you are likely to be able to buy in your first season in the prem, villa have one of the better central midfileders in the league and they spent over 100 million and they are still going down, and their squad will be absolutely decimated in the summer.

Norwich may lose the odd player but they are financially in a position where they only have to accept absolutely mental money whereas Villa will have to sell as they cannot sustain their squad in the Championship.

Sheffield United are where they are because they have a decent squad, but they have a manager who tactically is as good as anyone in the league.

I think Norwich could have spent a little more and given it a better go, but they will Likely be in the best position of the 3 relegated teams and they have some good money to ensure they have a side to win the championship next season.

Yep basically what I was going to say. Buendia, Cantwell and Godfrey all will have big interest from bigger clubs.

It is true about the money and keeping players. The problem is the players though. They don’t have to be happy about Norwich rejecting offers for them. Them telling Dortmund they want 50m for Godfret for example. How does he feel about that? What problems does that cause down the line? Of course it is all an if but we have seen it here what 1-2 players with an eye elsewhere can do to a team.

Not saying Norwich got is very wrong because they will be in a good place financially. That said they didn’t do morale any favours not strengthening. That side looks real flat and low on confidence. Think it will be a big ask for them to finish top 6 next season. On paper should be easy but are players going to look at Farke the same after the way 2020 went for them? He didn’t adapt at all to their situation and imo that could be a big problem next season on top of losing, most likely, 3-4 of their best players.
