Either they are guilty and should be banned or not guilty and no fine.

What a mess

Not really. They were guilty of "failing to cooperate", but innocent of the "serious breaches of FFP" that they had been accused of.

Yea ruling seems to indicate that there was little evidence of wrongdoing and even where there was it was outside of the times frame of 5 years in the UEFA regulation. Hardly surprising its been overturned really.

UEFA were trying to make an example of them which I understand but you actually have to make sure they have broken the rules before you do that.

  • Base fee for group stage: €15,250,000
  • Group match victory: €2,700,000
  • Group match draw: €900,000
  • Round of 16: €9,500,000
  • Quarter-finals: €10,500,000
  • Semi-finals: €12,000,000
  • Losing finalist: €15,000,000
  • Winning the Final: €19,000,000

So they will likely make around 5 times the fine in UCL prize money alone next season based on their usual performance (QF or better, 4W 1D 1L in group) - does not seem like much of a fine or deterrent in any way

On further examination it seems the allocation of prize money is far more complex - needless to say Man city will make more than the fine in competing in UCL next year.

Heaven forbid the authorities go against the football heavyweights. Guarantee if Atlanta did it, the punishment would be much more severe.

Uefa holds no authority over MLS teams ?

Literally no downsides to breaking FFP, this ruling sets a dangerous president. Break the rules, have to pay 10M... What is the point? Every club will do it now.

I'm pretty sure Real Barca PSG Bayern Juve have flouted the rules for years ?

I don't think it affects us.

Shock, horror, mega rich club is told it was a naughty boy, told not to do it again and given a slap on the wrist by mummy UEFA. I've said it before and I'll say it again the Champions League is a totally corrupt farce that exists for the benefit of a dozen clubs instead of trying to footballing raise standards across Europe by equitable TV wealth. The majority of league champions are placed in barely televised qualifying rounds while the 'elite' champions of sod all are placed straight into the league stages where the real money is. I won't watch it.

Got to wonder why UEFA tried bringing a case against Man City where the 5 year statutory limitation had passed

And here's the crux of the matter.

They wanted to make an example out of Man City and in their attempt, they threw out their own rule book. A muppet lawyer could probably got the same result, let alone a club that can throw money at the best lawyers.

This is what happens when regulatory organisations don't think about what they actually want to do and THEN put the right controls in place. Do they seriously think that they won't be challenged and scrutinised? They will sort it out one day but while they are faffing around, the Man City's of the world will find the cracks in the controls and take the piss. A case of keep it simple stupid, rather than creating something so complicated that it can't be enforced.
