When have the club ever let us down ?

42 years, just part and parcel of following a lesser football club. The many disappointments make the few highlights even better.

...with that I can agree! I tell my kids, on whom following City has been inflicted, that it's character building...and in a very real sense I think it has been.

Off the top my head:

Ducking out of the required managerial appointment (if it's Holden)

Quality of football for the last 2 years

Ducking out of the signings required in 2018

Ducking out of the signings required in 2008

Coppell Failure

Travelling to Leeds to watch the Hunt and David James show

Appointing Millen

Appointing Tinnion

Appointing Jimmy Lumsden after Joe Jordan

Appointing Russell Osman

Appointing Benny

Not turning up and being humiliated at Rovers in 1990

Play-off final 2004

Play-off final 1988

Sitting through 6-0 home defeat against Cardiff

No Sell on clause for Andy Cole

Almost every year in a major cup competition

Being a City fan is not easy is it!

A genuine question .

We have all got angst in our pants over the lack of Chris Hughton but in reality when have the club ever let us down ?

I am not talking about playing or not playing this or that player but more globally.

We have been happy with how the club have been doing business over recent years , seemingly becoming professional after so many years of amateurism.

They have genuinely tried to improve on and off the pitch even if we as fans don’t always agree with their efforts ; Pulis, LJ , Ashton Vale ...

Should we just , perhaps, trust them to do the right thing ?

Instead of continually trying to be funny and take the piss on here, try educating yourself with the below

Millen and Tinnion being appointed managers

Lack of communication with the fans

The club has let us down on quite a few occasions.

The biggest let down since we lost to Windy-ass

The summer transfer fiasco after promotion from league one.

January transfer after the Manchester games. *Mark Ashton made some strange statement about not going for it this year or something.

Each incident killed momentum. Momentum can’t be turned on like a tap, when it’s there it has to be grabbed by both hands and built on.

You can add the January of 2008 to that aswell, Stoke strengthened and we bought Adebola + Nick Carle.. both decent signings but not enough - again momentum was lost.

The big problem that every sports club, not just football, has is the uncertainty for the future. COVID hasn’t gone away and the revenue streams are diminishing or stopped completely.

It’s ok to rely on the television money but how long are the tv companies going to pay top dollar for a product that needs them ?

‘ You don’t accept our new reduced offer then you don’t have an audience for your sport . You die. ‘

I have to be honest, I would absolutely love it if all the tv companies pulled out. Imagine the millions  of people who have never been to a football match in their life being forced ( if they really do actually like football ) to watch their local sides. It would end the endless conversations I hear in my workplace after every Premier League game. “We” did this, “we” did that blah blah, from people who wouldn’t know where Manchester or Liverpool was if they were forced from their bloody armchair. I heard a lad boasting that he watched his team play more than his mates last season........ he went to one game!

I would also love to see the faces of the players who get given 200k plus a bloody week, when they are told there is just no money to pay them there ridiculous wages.

Us supporters would then be in charge of the game, because our money through the turnstiles would then actually count.

I know this is all a dream, but it’s cheered me up thinking about it, even though it will never happen ?

The slow insidious transformation of being treated like customers rather than supporters. The poor design of what is a wonderful stadium, but an atmospheric void.  The lack of communication and even occasional consultation with the loyal fan base ............ To allude to just three.

Where do people feel we would be if Steve Lansdown HADN'T taken us over and spent 100 million plus on the club, infrastructure etc. We would probably still be in a crumbling Ashton Gate, probably lower league and be around the same level as the Gas. Whatever happens with the new coach, you can only hope that lessons have been learned by the board and that if the coaches do fail then they will be more proactive in stopping the rot. As a supporter you can only hope.

I remember a good few years back leaving the ground after a midweek home match where we'd lost and been awful, and a young lad was saying to his Dad "do we have to come again on Saturday?". To which the Dad replied "Yes. Now man up, it's character building".

I would love that too. Time for a football reset.

Absolutely, but aren’t you even a little bit curious as to why we have achieved so little?

I get that, but as someone who does recall the darkness I'd simply say that for younger folk talking about events in 1982 is akin to our younger selves hearing about the club's struggles during the war...and to them about as relevant as it would have seemed to us in 1982.

I'm amazed that people of our generation are as satisfied as some appear to be with the way things have gone. City have flattered to deceive for 4 decades. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is a club specialism...we could be about to do it again!

I accept that it is easy to look back at past times and selectively pick certain points. Times change and so do people's appreciations. It's also easy to have hindsight and maybe that's part of the ongoing concern. However, it easiest to be demanding for more - even in Liverpool I dare say. Greatness is not something that is shared out or allocated on a rota. No one has a right to it.

Could we have done better? Undoubtedly. Should we have done better? That's a relative question. Could we have done worse? Equally undoubtedly.

But we could also be in the state that other clubs are in now. Aim high by all means but don't lose sight of the ground beneath you.

Really feel for Cotts. He still lives in Bristol I think?  Someone I know bumps into him at David Lloyd - or was doing so the last time we talked about it - and Cotts apparently felt bitter about things some years later.  Says he's a really nice guy though.

Someone else said something pretty similar a few months back.

Met him a couple of times and confirm he is a nice bloke who will talk football happily with anyone.

Progression has turned into survival and without wishing to sound overdramatic there are going to be massive repercussions if the clubs cannot get fans back into the grounds.

Mr Lansdown is not a gambler even if his softly, softly approach seems inadequate for a club pushing for the Prem I am reassured that we will at least have a club to support when the dust settles.

I think this is the nub of it. As a result I’m not convinced we will see many signings. Applicants for the manager’s job will likely have been told this. “You need to be able to work with largely the same squad you have today; use Walsh, Morrell, Moore etc.” Someone like Hughton may want more than that. Holden has the advantage that he knows the ability of those players.
