Another coach to ‘’help’’ Holden then is it?

And people say the reason we didn’t want Chris Hughton is because he wanted a complete new backroom staff. Mental really...

Anyone in the know have any rough idea what we are paying the coaches? Guessing Holden is on somewhere between 7-10 k a week but how about the others? @Kid in the Riot???

Hang on, we appointed the cheap option didn't we?

Now the club are apparently looking at spending money on coaching staff, that's wrong too?

It’s clear we have a group of talented players.

it is also clear that under LJ tenure, the coaching on offer provided nothing that enabled progressive development of said players.

im fully behind the idea that if we have a fantastic coaching setup that can get the best out of our players, we will see the positive effect via results and performances on the pitch.

How many more does Holden need to get the job done.

How many coaches do other clubs have 2 3?

15?

There are many many things to bitch about appointing a Premier league coach from a club renowned for developing players isnt one of them

And then make a sarcy comment on said ‘bitching’, thus adding yet more dull and pointless replies one has to read through to actually try and get some information.

Only now, at the end, do you understand the power of the dark side!  ( I think that was from the evil Emperor in Star Wars.)

Its becoming clear that this wasn’t so much the ‘’cheap’’ option - but the option that allows Ashton and more importantly Steve Lansdown to retain the power over the footballing side he clearly craves so much.

The jury is out for me anyway as I’m willing to give Holden a chance now. The anger has subsided and maybe this coaching set up will work. What i think Lansdown has done though is lose the trust of many fans, brilliant if this all works out and Holden and his merry band of assistants get us into the play-offs - a very uncomfortable period indeed for SL and his main man Ashton if it doesn’t work though.

I sincerely hope we get off to a good start because Dean is going to have to be a very thick skinned individual if we don’t. The knifes will be out for him very very early on if we start badly IMO.

The Liverpool Boot Room didn't do too badly.

It could be argued that the minute they moved away from the boot room was the beginning of their fall from grace.

So if true about Nevin please tell me what is our head coach actually going to do? It's getting more ridiculous by the day.

A really odd thing to try and criticise them for. Extra coaches means better coaching and more specialised and focused coaching. Don’t see the problem at all, especially as they seem to be fairly respected coaches

The only reason a club would need is three assistant coaches is the head coach is not up to scratch. A camel is a horse designed by a committee.

A camel is the supreme animal in a desert situation and a horse is not , ergot if the committee was challenged to come up with a desert based animal then they would have done a fantastic job so I don’t actually see the point.

I did suggest a day ago, not long after this thread started, that this might perhaps be old news that has only just surfaced, relating to an approach made by City before they succeeded in hiring Simpson and Downing. The above exchange of messages would tend to support that theory.

Completely unproven that it was either a cheap option or a matter of control.

I think it’s pointless to keep beating the club with that stick. It’s just as plausible that DH genuinely held the best interview, but that doesn’t fit the agenda of some of the “haters”

Certainly agree it's time to let it go. We'll never get to know what went on over the course of those 5 or 6 weeks, though it does seem overwhelmingly likely that when the process started they didn't think they were going to be appointing DH, so something went pear-shaped along the way, I think. Anyway, good luck to the bloke.

Meanwhile, regarding the main theme of this thread, though again we'll never know for sure, it now does appear that City might have wanted either Nevin & Nolan or  Simpson & Downing, but not all four, which some of us have been roundly chastised for having the temerity to suggest...

Totally agree, I have never seen or heard anything that suggests that Ashton is remotely interested in picking the side or anything else to do with the playing side. If that was even partially true you might expect to see him somewhere in the background in the Failand videos or something, but no sign that I can remember. It's such a weird suggestion really, the guy was in football but seems to have realised that his skill set was more aligned with the finances and administration side, looking at his career, he doesn't seem to have any badges, or any inclination towards that side of the game.

Absolutely understand your point but the club hired an inexperienced head coach why not hire an experienced coach and have less staff max of 3 is enough in my opinion especially for the size of the squad.. A club like Manchester utd man city Liverpool etc that's understandable with overall vast size of the squads and clubs.I said when Johnson got sacked the club needed to hire a quality coaching set up thats from head coach, assistant coaches to goalkeeper coach( still think we need someone in this area and better than we have) etc etc To have 4 coach's and that's before goalkeeping at this level and the size of our club is suicidal and to top heavy.. 3 top coaches should of replaced what was already there.(out with 3 in with 3)Anyway the rumour has been squashed and that makes sense I just can't see us having that extra one.

As it is the intention to allow the young players to train with the first team squad at the new training ground, maybe this creates the need for a new coach with experience of transitioning young players into the first team.  The whole enlarged group could be nearly 50 players maybe. Lots of coaching staff will be needed.

Like i said lets see how he gets on. I wonder If Ashton has already pre recorded the speech if we are in the bottom 3 after 10-15 games.

As an experienced and capable “corporate” executive, I would guess he has.

He keeps it in his desk drawer alongside the pre-recorded speech he made for if we are in the top 6 after 10-15 games.

Major, as you well know the point is, it’s a well known saying - ie an analogy of group decision-making,  by emphasizing the ineffectiveness of incorporating too many conflicting opinions into a single project through compromise

Is it? How many coaches do they have at other clubs in the Championship? I have no idea, but I'd be surprised if we were out of the ordinary in having 3 coaches supporting the Manager/Head Coach. Even back in "the good old days" although the press would only talk about the Manager and their immediate assistant, there were other coaches involved behind the scenes.

As it stands we have (please correct me) the following actively involved in day to day training

  • Dean Holden - Head Coach
  • Paul Simpson - Assistant HC
  • Keith Downing - Assistant HC
  • Kalifa Cisse - Coach (plus other roles)
  • Pat Mountain - Goalkeeper Coach
  • Rene Gilmartin - Player / GK Coach (Academy duties too)
  • Patrick Orme - Head of Fitness (heavily involved in day to day training)
  • Andrew Rolls - Head of Performance
  • Andrew Proctor - Lead Physio

Plus Scott Murray loitering ?

Obviously the goalkeepers are often taken off separately too.

How does that compare with other clubs Dave? All those roles seem required to me, doesn’t one of the GK coaches work with the women’s team as well?

Thanks Dave,

Does anyone have any insight into Andrew Rolls' role and how it interconnects with Orme's, the physio's and the other coaches? Really interesting job title that. He came to us from Arsenal didn't he? Was physio there I believe.

Blackburn not dissimilar if you translate job roles:

Nor Derby:

That’s just two teams around us in the table.

I don’t watch Robin’s nest normally, but I was interested in this one.  Really insightful.
