Have to say, I think it's harsh to say he looked "out of depth" in the Championship. His total league minutes played for us equated to just over ONE game. Simply not enough to make a judgement.

And the one game he played he looked lost and made no contribution whatsoever. That’s why we sold him. League 1 is his level!

I think we could possibly regret this but it's not our fault. We can't offer SS the game time he needs to develop and he possibly doesn't want to be loaned out again. Kinda reminds me of the Ayling situation, I don't think he'd be the player he is now if he didn't move, Leeds did wonders for him.

He may progress to be a cracking championship player, and that'll be down to him moving perm and getting the development.

We've all had a dig at MA over the past months, myself included.

However, he deserves some credit for getting more than £1m for Sammi and actually making us a profit on a lad that played about 70 minutes for us.

Read a very interesting article from the owner of the Posh. He's quoted as saying it was the hardest negotiation of his life!

So, well done MA ?

Really, I don’t see why people would be surprised by City getting 1m plus for him. He was one of their best players I believe last season. In fact, if the transfer was the other way round, you can be sure it would be 3m plus, if not more. Hope we have a good sell on clause. COYR

Whilst I respect MA globally for the job he’s doing I don’t think a million plus was exceptional for a talented individual normally speaking , however we have a top heavy squad and needed to shift out some players and SS had a suitor in LEAGUE 1.

Even with the sale of Toney Posh have to respect the wage cap and survive without match day revenue whilst aiming for promotion.

We obviously didn’t have any interest from Championship or Prem clubs for the lad so it was surely the best deal possible.

Like you I hope and expect that MA loaded the deal with add ons and we could see a nice return in the future.

I wish SS the very best of luck getting his career back on track.

Is talk of profit not missing a fairly major expense?

I assume his contract included a signing on fee or 'loyalty fee' as a lot clubs call them.

Generally this are paid at various points over the lifetime of a contract, so a 400k signing on fee on a 4 year deal would likely be 4 x 100k annually.

If they player hasn't asked to move, then the loyalty element is usually still due (although not necessarily at the point of cessation, but over the lifetime of the original deal). This apparently replaced the 10% of transfer fee players were due once-upon-a-long-ago if they were sold without requesting a move, where players with a significant resale value would effectively down tools rather than request a move to get their 10% as clubs didn't want awkward/difficult players bringing everyone down.

Obviously, it entirely depends how a contract is worded and a negotiated settlement, but it can still be expensive. Especially if the club employ an agent to help with the sale.

(Pretty sure it was a David Conn book I got that from).

@Bristol Rob Yes, when I worked for Lloyds we had one City player who banked with us, who wasn’t great with his money.  He was reliant on his contract loyalty bonus from a former club to keep him in betting money!!

Could probably be pretty much any footballer these days!

Bankruptcy rates do seem to he disproportionately high in that sector.

That said, I have had the misfortune of drinking in the same pub as a group of Rovers players when they been awarded a rare Sunday off (having won on the Saturday) - a comment I made that they didn't think was anywhere near as amusing as I did. Anyway, despite their overly confident nature, boisterous behaviour, one thing was very obvious.

They were trying to live Premier League lifestyles on League One money.

Cash, clothes, watches and jewellery that looked way beyond their means. Granted, they were all likely on more than the national average wage, but for a life limited career when beyond the age of 28/29 you are likely going to see your income drop year on year, they had clearly bought in to an expected lifestyle and appeared to have a need for outward express of wealth.

The one exception was (I think) Chris Lines, who agreed to do a presentation for some bloke who managed a junior team, wasn't on the happy-juice and came across as a thoroughly nice bloke who was clearly embarrassed by the behaviour of some of the younger players, he appeared to be normal and not remotely interested in their 'flash' behaviour. He'd probably been given advice that he took on board at some point that once the football is done, you'll have to get a proper job and the salary of a player might be difficult to get outside the pro game.

Thinking back to when I started going to football, the best players had 'the best cars' but pretty much every car was plastered in advertising, 'Mark Gavin - Bristol City - proudly drives this Bryan Brothers provided Ford Escort'. Or some other garish content.

These days, it's probably monster expensive lease higher arrangements and an annual insurance fee that would cost more than the average annual salary!

My Partner used to deal with the finances of a former Rovers player. Horrible individual who would attempt to draw all his wages out in cash the second it was paid in, despite owing more than he earned and often became abusive and threatening. This was quite a while agogo but I believe he was one of their highest paid players at the time.

Subtle... I like it. Was your partner a junior accountant?

Sammie seems to be getting into his stride at Posh, four goals in the last two. He has always impressed me going back to his time at Colchester with his speed and scoring ability, he was never given a proper chance here. He is one of those players who is at his best playing off the shoulder of the last defender, a role he wasn’t given enough opportunity to carry out here. Our coaches don’t seem to be able to engineer swift counter attacks, or we don’t develop players with the pace to play that way. I would have liked to see him playing with Kacey Palmer picking out his runs. I have a feeling this will come back to bite us, I hope MA negotiated a good sell on fee when Posh inevitably cash in but I’d rather we had him in our squad and given a decent run with tactics that suited him.

The fact he was prominent part of last year’s pre-season when consensus was he looked good, to not get any minutes was piss-poor imho.

Started off really slowly for them this season, noticed quite a few of their fans disappointed with his performances since signing permanently, as mentioned 4 in 2 now though, could be getting going at just the right time for them. Him & Clarke Harris at that level should cause issues for most.

Not forgetting LJ publicly saying ‘everything about him was screaming not to sign him, I had to be really convinced to’ - what a brilliant way to welcome a new 22 year old to the club

He’s got something about him , a real burning energy and enthusiasm and some very quick feet

Thought when we signed him and then when I  watched him for U23s that he had the potential to really burst through and be a bit of a Vardy type find (Not suggesting he’s in same league as Vardy - but that sort of burst through).

And I still do
