Worst away day.

Having read Ska Junkies post I'm just glad I've been lucky enough to come home in one piece after over 40 years of away games. There's certainly been a few close scrapes.

Nothing on the pitch will come as depressing as 02/05/90

More recently, last season at Luton had bad tactics, players out of form and an embarrassing section of our own fans, so that wasn't a barrel of laughs.

I was there on 2nd May 1990 too, must be me.

What happened to us was extremely unlucky, that's how I handle it to this day. Could have been anyone but, unfortunately for us, it was us that were jumped. The results were extremely sad but we have no choice but to move on. I'll despise Brentford until the day I shuffle off this earth though.

I'm guessing we've shared a few away ends over the years and seen a fair bit of trouble back in the day but getting jumped like that is as you say extremely unlucky and sickening. I don't blame you holding a grudge against Brentford and I expect Chelsea too.

Glad you were able to move on, hopefully we'll get to see our best away day ever in the not too distant future

It would have to beat Highbury and Highfield Rd for me Ralph but we live in hope! ?

Blackpool away 2002 when we had a pretty good chance of the play offs but needed to get something from the game. 4 - 0 down at half time and lost 5 - 1.

Any away game v Wolves too.

You stole my thunder!!! ?, I thought it was 5-0, but I'm sure you're right

Much more recent one, 5-0 loss to villa a couple of years ago on New Year’s Day. Absolutely despise villas fans and seeing them enjoy themselves as we capitulated on the pitch in front of them was awful. Tried to leave early but the car was boxed in by other cars at the car park, so ended up sitting in the car park for almost 45 mins until the last smug brummy came to move their car around us. Not a good start to that year.

There was definitely a 5 - 0 defeat at Blackpool. Think that was Millen’s last game in charge, obviously quite a few years later.

Northampton 7 City 1

19 Sep 1982

We were refunded  £1 of our entry fee because of the restricted view (basically in a huge cage at the Northamptonshire cricket ground where they used to play). We should have paid them for not being able to see two sending off and 7 goals conceded.

Thinking about it I may be getting two different trips to Northampton mixed up (the refund may have come at a later defeat) but either way it was a crap place to go.

Most scared ive ever been at a away game, was when we lost 3 2 to barnet, in the cup under tinnion.

This bloke got on the tube, and started showing me what he had bought shopping that day, im pretty sure he had been to soho.

Then he asked me would i like to come back to his house for a tarot card reading, i got up and legged it at finsbury park.

QPR away.

was in a pub on Shepherd’s Bush before the game. Police for some reason surround the pub and then insisted on escorting all the city fans in the pub, to the ground... the longest route possible! Should have taken 10-15 minutes. Took about an hour.

Missed the first half hour, by which time we were 3 nil down.....

Reckon I was in the same pub! Met Police were complete ?️ends that day. Kettling, provoking, covered numbers - all the old tricks.

Dunno if it counts but Brighton at the Millennium takes some beating for shit days out.............................

Tranmere away on a Friday night in pouring rain and we lost 6-0.

Brighton definitely counts (and still hurts) and yes I was at Tranmere too!

Blackpool away when we could have got in the play offs but didn’t turn up.

Cardiff pre-segregation. Lost, I think, 1-0. While everyone else was chased off the Grange Town End, we for some bizarre reason stayed, were identified and suffered for the full 90 minutes.

The capitulation to Brighton in Cardiff, who were their for the taking, who’s fans were far more concerned about their ground situation, was majorly depressing and sums up our unerring ability to always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Overall though, the likes of ‘those’ trips to Highfield Road, Highbury and Forest’s City Ground, not forgetting Eastville,  more than make up for the odd bad ‘un.

Can't remember the year (90's) but we had Preston away last game of the season and iirc we needed to win to clinch the title/promotion.

Didn't have a ticket but thought we could get one at the ground. Unfortunately, it was sold out and nobody had one for sale anywhere.

The pubs were shut so me and 1 of the guys i went up with (the other 2 already had tickets) went back to the car to listen to the game on the radio only to find the only game on local radio was Burnley v Gas.

City lost 2-0 (?) and we lost one of our mates. Spent hours driving around trying to find him (none of us owned mobiles) going to police stations and hospitals etc.

Eventually got back to our local at 10:45 to find our mate in the bar drunk. He couldn't find our motor so just jumped on a minibus and went home.

Terrible day all round.

Got unceremoniously put of my arse from a great height by a copper whilst trying to climb out of that cage, then on the way home got involved with a couple of Northampton fans at the train station and came a distant second. Bruised and fed up all the way home to WSM.

1-2 defeat if it's the one I am thinking of: 1997/8. All 3 goals in the first 10-20 minutes from what I recall.

Last away game of the season, I think?  Huge turn out and that sort of performance. Wilson should have gone at the end of that season really - we had too many shit away days like that under his tenure.

Stoke 2008 was defo a bad one.  Also Chesterfield away one year where Tins ended up in goal? Again DW era where we'd routinely get dicked by poor sides away from home.

Yep, we needed the win for the championship. Having already sold Goater we were pretty light up front.  McCarthy scored the goal for us then injured himself in the celebration. Not a good day.

Yeah that was a poor day for me too. I was up there with some mates. I was on my own in the away end while 4 of them were in the home end. I had to spend the rest of the evening with them... 2 Villa fans, 1 Brentford fan and a gashead.

We were truly terrible away from home against sides below 10th under DW.

Remember it well. Strolled out of the Walkabout in Shepherd’s Bush and a copper threw us in the herd, breaking two of my fingers in the process. Complete ?s

Pretty sure if my memory serves me right we had to better Watford’s result to win the title, having gone on a slump after selling Goater on deadline day, so the defeat was academic in the end as Watford won.

McCarthy scored his only goal for us in that game to give us the lead & then as you said did a hilarious celebration which involved some completely inappropriate attempt at gymnastics for someone so portly. Also remember he had lost his father in the week leading up to the game, so although he was pretty rubbish, I always thought that took some bollocks to play, for a bloke who was only on loan & left us immediately afterwards.

Wrexham away twice in  night cup games in the same season, embarrassing both times

What made it worse was that we were in the top flight then and I think Wrexham were in the Second or Third Division. They were all over us and we were worse than lacklustre.

The entrance to Wrexham's away must have had one of the narrowest turnstiles in the UK. I was told "Heavy Duty" (who some on here may know/ have known) had to be escorted into our end via a different entrance. Although I saw his mates there that night, I didn't catch sight of him, so I can't confirm if this is true.

I remember that Jon Macken winding up our fans during the warm-up and celebrating at the end as though Preston had won promotion themselves.
