Worst away day.

Stoke away November 1999.

A bloody turgid game under Pulis. We had to change kits at half time due to a colour clash. We just about managed a 1-1 draw in the end.

Then, after the match, the area at the rear of the away end which was all open before the game, was closed off by the Police to create a fenced pen. Giving Stoke fans a captive audience while bottles, cans and other objects were thrown over the fence.

Add that memory to losing to Stoke at Wembley a few months later and I really hate that club.

Bitterly cold night in November at home versus Carlisle. Think we lost 4-1.Half full coach from Taunton so had to pay double the fare. The East End started cheering every Carlisle move by the middle of the second half. Also away to Pompey in the Cup also in the 70s.Very scary day out. Chased out of the ground then battered all the way back to the station.

Blackpool in one playoff chasing end of season game was awful.

As was the 0-0 there in August in a season shortly after , no shots on target, ANNNND cold really cold

I was happy to eventually see city win there, so never have to go again.

......

Colchester 2005/2006 (I think) apart from setting a record a some pub quiz game with @elhombrecitowas pretty awful too.  A terrible game that City weren't in from start to finish.

Also forgot(how could I) Hartlepool away in the cup probably late 80s.Stupidly volunteered to drive, had a migraine all day and we lost 1-0.

I was there, the FA Cup tie after so many replays against Aldershot, the North Sea driving into the away end and a late (pre VAR) penalty sent us out of the cup. It was a long coach trip back.

better weather at Bournemouth away in 85, I travelled 7 hours from Liverpool. We were shocking, 4-0 down in no time, Colin Clarke scored four. If I recall Gary Emmanuel had a total shocker. We were lucky it was only 0-5.

Wigan away last game of 00/01 season - started well enough with a carnival atmosphere celebrating the Gash’s relegation and easily outsinging the pathetic home crowd, goading they that they were going to miss out on the playoffs.

Turned sour though as a goalless draw  was enough to get them into the playoffs and ran the gauntlet back to the train station with their scummy element trying to pick off City fans on the way back to the train station - was really dicey.

Southampton away in 2008.

Travelling from London, I got to my local train station only to find all trains were suspended due to a fire near Waterloo. So desperate was I to see the match, I paid over £100 for a taxi.

Lost 0-2 and played really badly, despite us being top. I think that was the season Southampton got relegated too.

Having lived in Hampshire, I had grown a real dislike for “Saints”, so this day really didn’t help matters. We were also kettled out of the ground, which was quite unpleasant. Plus a fight started amongst our own fans in the stand.

Reading the report sums up how poor we were: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/football/2008/apr/06/sport.sport4

Notts County Xmas 91? 2-1 literally into extra time. All the reds are singing jingle bells jingle bells oh what fun ....

Then the striker Regis I think cousin of Cyril and the runner John horsed one one in from 40 yrs. Then they scored again.Fffs?????

1983  fa cup at Meadow Lane when Tom Ritchie was somehow not given a penalty also grates a bit!!!!

Went to Notts County 5 times never saw city win. Swindon is another and probably been there 7 +

As others have said the Dave Kelly/WMP game against Walsall

Any game out at Trumpton against the zombies.Did see 4-2  league game and Littlewoods cup victory.

The best days and funniest days of my life were watching city so it was always a labour of love.

Once hopefully this horrible virus has gone(ish)I can take my boys to experience equal pain.

Dipping in and out, I was at a lot of the games mentioned, but I doubt this was has been

Sheffield United , playoff 2nd leg.

We met in Downend early, few beers and the atmosphere was building. Got to Sheffield and the driver wasn't sure of the way , stopped at a pub for directions, we also took advantage of a swift one. Got to the ground, saw the coach in front had a Bristol pub sign in the back window. Pulled up at the turnstile and OB got on and asked some divot in the front seat "have you been to a pub"? He very honestly said yes. With that we were stopped from getting off, given an escort back to the Motorway and told we would have to return to Bristol.
They meant it too, listening on the radio found out that we got the result so we decided to stop for a beer. Coventry was close, so nipped off and found a pub. I ordered a beer then went to the Phonebox (remember those) to ring the Mrs of the time. Some young kid was knocking on the door, he asked if I was with the coach in the pub, when I said yes he told me the Police had surrounded the Pub . He showed me the back door in, and sure enough they forced us back on the coach and off back to Bristol.

So that was my worst away game, one I didn't actually see.

We hadn't that in 87 when playing them away in the play offs at Springfield park. The away end was unbelievable stood on a muddy grass bank with a small cowshed as a roof then leaving the ground their little mob were hanging around Wigan pier waiting but didn't see what was coming around the corner and were caught off guard!

Christ that was bad! You remember having to walk across a field to get to the away end in the dark and rain? I tripped over an abandoned shopping trolley and skinned me shin right down, bloody stung like crazy all night.

Cardiff pre-segregation. Lost, I think, 1-0. While everyone else was chased off the Grange Town End, we for some bizarre reason stayed, were identified and suffered for the full 90 minutes.

The capitulation to Brighton in Cardiff, who were their for the taking, who’s fans were far more concerned about their ground situation, was majorly depressing and sums up our unerring ability to always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Overall though, the likes of ‘those’ trips to Highfield Road, Highbury and Forest’s City Ground, not forgetting Eastville,  more than make up for the odd bad ‘un.

I was there and dont remember being chased anywhere, definitely the opposite before the game coming out of the station.

Plymouth, 2002.

Off the train, held in the back alley of the station for an hour whilst we waited for the next set of fans, surrounded by dumpsters, police dogs and the smell of our own urine since nobody was allowed out of the alley. We were awful and lost 2-0, it all started kicking off after the game and when we got back to the station the old bill put all the city fans in one carriage, irregardless of what train we had booked or anything else, it was awfully overcrowded. I was only 13, didn’t put me off though, just.

Saw @Riaz mention the QPR 0-3 game, a close second only spared by the fact that at the time I lived in Bournemouth, and on the train home a bunch of Saints fans joined me, they’d beaten Palace that day and we got smashed and they even left me a couple cans as they got off before me.

2 games, in the ward, benny season.

We played well at palace, matt jensen scored in the last minute.

Away at port vale, we were 2, 0 down i think, got it back to 2 2 and they scored again.

I think the vale game was when i saw murray, do his goal celebration, running and going mental.

We threw so many games away that season away from home.

The 2002 Blackpool game when we lost 5-1 was pretty awful. As was a 3-0 defeat at Wolves in the 1998-99 relegation season when Flapper Phillips tried to kick a back-pass up field and missed, and the ball trickled over the line.

The defeat at Swansea in Tinnion’s last game as manager was hideous.

I also remember a completely abject performance from City I a 2-0 defeat at Stockport during the Wilson years.

Another one was a game at Ipswich about 8 years ago when we lost 2-0. On the train after the game an Ipswich fan told me he was speechless at how bad we were and showed genuine sympathy that the travelling fans had had to put up with such a dire performance.

Any away game v Wolves too.

Agree (and the 3-3 is the last away game I missed!) - any away day in the Black Country full stop, have so many memories of getting smashed at both Molineux or the Hawthorns and walking away listening to people in that ridiculous accent reminding us how crap we were, though Wolves fans the significantly more irritating.

As it happens it's a draw that annoyed me the most - 2-2 under Benny at WBA where Aaron Brown announced himself in style but the ref kept playing until the drink driver got an equaliser. Add in the aggro at half time and WMP being their usual charming selves outside afterwards, and that was a pretty awful end to an away day.

I once had such a bad hangover that I sat down, leaned over and had a sleep on the terrace at Saltergate. It was only 1-1 but that probably qualifies as my personal worst. There were some awful ones under Pulis, we got well beaten at the Manor Ground if memory serves. And as someone said, Luton last season for other reasons.

Also been dipping in and out of this. 2/5/90 still tops it for me but another couple of Honourable mentions......1-1 against Oxford 91 or 92 in really dense fog sticks in the mind and a 0-6 at Ipswich. Only time I ever went to Portman Road. We made Danny Haynes look like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yeah I was at that Stockport one, awful game and performance on a ploughed field of a pitch. It was a couple of weeks after that long winning run had been ended by a last minute defeat at Hillsborough and we looked unrecognisable from the team that had won 11 on the bounce or whatever it was.

As someone mentioned in an earlier post, that sort of abject defeat away from home against poor sides was a recurring theme of the Wilson era.

Cambridge away 0-0. Absolute shocker of a game. Left ground coach broke down got home about 2am .

West Brom away lost 4-1 . Went with the sandringham lot on a coach. On the way got a flat tyre . Got of coach it pissed down. Then coaches police escorted around the houses back to junction 5 took longer to get on the M5 then it did back to Bristol. And West Brom’s ground is literally just off the motorway. Horrendous day

Does anyone remember a game at Southampton, I think we actually won it, but it was biblically wet, like end of days stuff. Sideways rain and the sky pitch black all day. Just walking between pubs or to the ground and you were soaked right through to the skin. I've just about dried out now and it must have been 10-15 years ago.

Weather and travel problems don't half make an away day ten times worse.

Pretty sure in that WBA game Mickey Bell also broke his leg, Testimitanu was stretchered off with an injury that kept him out for about the next 6 months & Mark Shail went off late in the game with concussion, but as we had already used all our subs (2 in those days) he came back on but clearly wasn’t right & as you say, Rob, Lee Hughes then scored their equaliser in the 96th minute.
