Worst away day.

Does anyone remember a game at Southampton, I think we actually won it, but it was biblically wet, like end of days stuff. Sideways rain and the sky pitch black all day. Just walking between pubs or to the ground and you were soaked right through to the skin. I've just about dried out now and it must have been 10-15 years ago.

Weather and travel problems don't half make an away day ten times worse.

I remember one that was on Sky on a Saturday teatime, sure LJ got the winner.

Got to be the Brighton play off final in Cardiff. I was living just outside York and drove down to the game. Got caught by the same speed camera going to and going home from the debacle on the pitch. 6 points and of course, a fine, on top of a shite performance

Sunderland away in FA Cup 1963. 12 hour train journeys there and back. Frozen ice rink for a pitch. Lost 6-1

Northampton away in Div 4. Some have already chosen that so can I join in? Horrible defeat but proud of the little boys we had in our team.

Also the Leicester Cup tie mentioned by others. First time I saw City playing Water Polo!

Plenty more that are best forgotten.

Leeds United away in the late 60's. Managed to board the train at Sheffield as had moved up there with my parents and was a ST holder in the cantilever stand at Sheffield Wednesday. Had kept my red and white scarf !! Was in away end and Gary Sprake was sent off for gobbing in Chris Garland's face. Was a lot of Leeds infiltrators in our end trying to cause trouble but we contained the idiots although at times was a bit hair raising for me as a teenager.

QPR away.

was in a pub on Shepherd’s Bush before the game. Police for some reason surround the pub and then insisted on escorting all the city fans in the pub, to the ground... the longest route possible! Should have taken 10-15 minutes. Took about an hour.

Missed the first half hour, by which time we were 3 nil down.....

Don't have fond memories of that one either. Kettled on leaving the Irish pub where the atmosphere was brilliant then not permitted to enter the ground for a minor non-football related, non-violent/aggressive misdemeanour. OB dropped me in White City and I walked back to T'Bush and saw my mates walking back to the pub having walked out as we were 0-3 down. Next year we lost again and I lost my phone. Not a fan of QPR away....... ?

As it happens it's a draw that annoyed me the most - 2-2 under Benny at WBA where Aaron Brown announced himself in style but the ref kept playing until the drink driver got an equaliser. Add in the aggro at half time and WMP being their usual charming selves outside afterwards, and that was a pretty awful end to an away day.

Couldn't stand Lee Hughes, even before the drink driving incident.

Horrible ginger ***; who had a stupid "dancing" goal celebration.

Is that what they call a real six-pointer?

QPR Away 1997, we lost 3-1, a knobhead off our bus CS Gassed a QPR lad outside the ground after the game, our lot and their lot had been smashing lumps off each other all afternoon, plod made all 48 of us get of the coach one at a time, as they searched us looking for the gas, once we was all off the coach they searched it and found 136 E’s in a bag. I’d never seen as many coppers before, within seconds we’d got two each, by the time we’d all been marched into loftus road, strip searched, had our fingerprints and photographs taken, interviewed under caution, and had cold pie & bovril each, it was gone half nine.

I was only 16 at the time, 16 year olds didn’t have mobile blowers in them days, Hardly anyone did, when I got home my mum bounced me off every wall in the kitchen for not phoning her, to let her know I was going to be late. My step dad had been to the boozer and was winding her up, with words of wisdom, such as he’s old enough to work, and make you a grandma, but he can’t stay out until midnight, without phoning home, and laughing hard, knowing it would wind her up, and get me cracked harder, by time I’d ate mi supper mi mum was sat with a bag of frozen peas on her hand, bless her.

... and who was looking after the kestrel?

Went to Oldham, 2005-06 season, just got up onto the M6, past Walsall and then hit gridlock, got to the outskirts of Oldham after 3 o’clock, tuned into the local radio commentary to hear we were 1-0 down!

Whilst parking up, I heard a roar, 2-0 Oldham. As I got in, we had a goal disallowed. Finally at 4-2 down, I decided to give up and head home. Think we lost 4-3 in the end.

Yeah that was a bad day.  But we still got promoted. That Walsall play off defeat meant that the whole season was for nothing. Throw in the complete capitulation and dreadful policing and it remains my number one crappiest away day ever!

Remember going up when we won in promotion season under GJ - my god when wind comes down off the pennines its bleak.   That and Blackpool got to be up there for coldest grounds.

Walsall away. Play offs 1989. 0-4. David Bloody Kelly + West Midlands Police = very bad day!

I haven't googled it but wasn't that 1988 not 1989?

I remember a playoff game at Walsall in 1988 because I drove to it on my way to my honeymoon with the new Mrs R&W. It was utterly dire - as was the weather. I got searched by the WMP and had a tiny penknife attached to my keyring which I used for fruit confiscated, which made us miss the start of the game - perhaps they were doing us a favour. After we left the game (early, it was so bad) I remember hitting a 'wall' of rain and coming across an upturned Escort Mk3 in the middle of the motorway, with a young chap in a suit trying to pick up papers from the road as cars swerved to avoid him.

The evening ended rather well though.....

Edit: If any of you remember someone giving out cakes and food whilst queuing around the corner of Ashton Gate, into the street, by the Robins cafe to buy tickets for that game, that was me and the new Mrs - giving out some of our uneaten leftovers from our wedding evening to the people in the queue!!!

Not read whole thread but one of my worst was the away game at Forest during our extended losing streak under LJ where Giefer made his debut. A freezing cold day, a bloody awful game, our eleventh defeat in twelve games and a 1-0 defeat to another struggling side due to the only interesting thing that happened in the entire match.  I remember a 3-0 defeat to Oxford in about 1999 (under Pulis?) but that was sort of bad enough that you could start to entertain yourself by marvelling at how inept we were whereas 1-0 defeats in grim games are just outright depressing.

March 1990.... Notts County (A). I left Bristol in jeans and T Shirt......got to Nottingham and was absolutely shrammed. I stood on the open terrace and hailstones arrived....full in the face. I copped one hailstone directly in the eye.......... and I wore specs. My mate started laughing at my reaction and asked what happened....as I turned to explain, caught another hailstone in the other eye....

Pales in comparison to some of these, but getting beat 4-1 by Reading, after dominating the early exchanges and taking the lead through a Caulker goal, was pretty bad. Such a Jekyll and Hyde performance.

Just remembered Jon Stead scored the rebound after Caulker hit the bar. Doesn’t make it any less painful ?

You are correct, it was 1988! 1989 was the league cup semi!

I was so hammered at that game, that I forgot where the minibus was, after the game. Spent an hour or two, weaving about Nottingham city centre, before I sobered up and luckily found my bank card. Got the choo choo back to Gloucester. Oh, and it was a shit 0-0, too.

Northampton when we lost 7-1 or 7-0, cant remember which, think it was a Sunday afternoon, may have been our first game on a Sunday and Twerton when we lost 3-0, I was amongst the pikeys that night and it wasn't pleasant to say the least. ??

I was at the Northampton game as well - at their old cricket ground stadium of course. Went with a Notts County supporting friend and remember feeling deeply embarrassed by it.

Valley Parade stood on that huge bank (before the tragedy and rebuild). I have never been so cold at a game before or since.

I was there and dont remember being chased anywhere, definitely the opposite before the game coming out of the station.

Well, you must have been one of the few. The vast majority of Bristol fans were in the centre of the Grange Town End about 45 minutes before KO. Were charged by Cardiff and ran off along the Bob Bank to the far open corner at the opposite end of the ground.

Can remember a St Georges flag being flown by our lot in that corner - much the derision of the Cardiff mob that we’re directly behind us as we stood near the front on their end.

Remember the events as clear as yesterday, as along with the likes of Chelsea away in the First Division, it was one of those matches that I spent 90 minutes  wondering how the **** do I extract myself from this predicament with my body intact.

On the subject of cardiff, does anybody remember the copper with the megaphone, about 89, around the back of the dolman.

Put the toilet cistern down.

You are a disgrace to your city.

You will be in trouble tonight.

He was making the situation worse, i recall being in block b that day, and hundreds of cardiff turned up late.
