I might be in the minority but I really like Weimann .

You aren’t.

Lee Johnson & Dean Holden did, too. They pick him pretty much every single game.

Probably because he does things like score a hat trick away at Sheff U or provide 3 assists at Boro, or score a sublime goal at Derby, you know, that sort of stuff.

Or maybe it is because he has a lot of top flight experience, superb fitness levels and a virtual 100% availability record & is a model professional.

A real head scratcher why they rate him, eh?

Tasty fixture.
I rate Wellens and I can see Swindon doing well this seasons - dark horses for promotion.
I might put a cheeky tenner on them (for promotion, not this game!!)

I assume it’s not televised or streaming anywhere???

A couple of weeks ago you could have got 20/1 on promotion no idea about now

I'm talking about best 11 if everyone is ever fit. Or more realistically when all in one position are fit..I can't see then where Weimann will be starting with Fam and Wells up top and all the midfield options we now have.

On Rowe I don't rate him at wing back. But whatever I think, it seems Holden is going with O'Dowda at left wing back cover to Dasilva.

If Rowe is seen as left centre back in a 3 then I'm not sure if he will be needed if rumours are true that we are looking to bring in another left sided centre back. It would then be new LCB or Baker. With Kalas, Moore and Vyner there too.

Rowe's best position is supposed to be midfield, but obviously very little chance of him being needed there either.

I either see him as emergency back up that probably won't play. Or moved on.

Rowe will be a utility player. It's useful to have, and our squad with it's relative inexperience, could probably do with a couple of more senior players. Rowe can fill in (and do a decent job) at CB, LB, LWB, CM, LM if needed. I don't think anyone else in the squad has that versatility.

I think you are viewing it in a far too linear way as an 'on paper' best 11. Very rare that our 'on paper' best 11 will be fit, especially over the whole season. That's without considering international call ups, suspensions and squad rotation through fatigue.

I've said before the brief time Rowe played centre back in one game he looked far more comfortable than at left back or wing back. So interesting to see if he is actually more comfortable there. He has no pace and for me is better suited centrally as he is strong and good in the air.

As for O'Dowda left wing back, also been saying for a long time that I think he could be a useful option there if Dasilva is out.

Not being positive for any other reason. It's what I've suggested trying in the past.

What's your reasoning for your confidence in O'Dowda at wingback? He has the athleticism to play it and attacking attributes, but what have you seen that makes you think he has the complete package?

When Bryan has played there, he obviously has the defensive attributes too. I'm not convinced O'Dowda does. Bryan is also far better offensively in my opinion. O'Dowda is also massively inconsistent and thinks he's better than he is imo.

I'd happily get rid of him this summer if possible and have Rowe/Pring as Dasilva's understudies.

I feel you will regret asking..

From memory Rowe (who I like) filled in at LCB for about 20 minutes in one game. He played LB for 23 of our first 25 games..

He is playing there today frankly because with Baker out & Benkovic, Wright & Williams no longer with us we have no one else.

I would be amazed if he features there in a league game.

I think if you haven't got a specialist wingback available (someone like Dasilva/Bryan) you'd go for a more defensive minded option (Rowe) over a more offensive one (O'Dowda). Better to be good at the fundementals in that role than the more glamorous side if you have to pick either/or.

I feel @JonDolman, with all due respect, is at times guilty of forming an opinion on a player very quickly and then dogmatically trying to vindicate it from then on. We're probably all guilty of that to some extent in fairness though.

Pace and athleticism, work rate all big parts of that role.

But also I liked what I saw when he played there before. That's simply the main reason.

Or even when played left back in one second half against Boro.

Not a lot to go on. But I wondered if that's something Holden might look at considering how he seems to want to attack with pace.

Seems like Holden believes O'Dowda can do that role as that's where he's playing him so in these friendlies.

Would be strange if he has no intention of using him as a wing back but play him there in the last 2 games.

When DaSilva isn't available we're stuffed.

I think it's simply down to selection issues elsewhere. I don't really see where O'Dowda fits in a 3/5/2 so if I were manager I'd look to get rid. He may be trying him there in friendly games, you might be right - my hunch would be that in the cut and thrust of league games he'd make a more cautious selection of Rowe as LWB where possible
