Again it's tight, but a longer time spent in the top two divisions, plus time spent in Europe. Average attendances are slightly lower but that's mainly due to location more than anything

Their fans also hate their owners- and their owners have stopped investing- toxic mix and will put a downward pressure on attendance to some extent.

Burnley, Palace, Fulham, Blackburn, Bolton, Huddersfield, QPR, Preston, Swansea, Watford, Charlton, Hull, Portsmouth all smaller than us.

Cardiff I would say we are pretty par with and cannot decide on Coventry, Ipswich.

My criteria is number of fans. For example Burnley haven't averaged more fans than we have now since 1963.

Interesting criteria! Number of fans vs size of town and catchment- think size of fans a bit of a red herring in isolation, but useful in conjunction with others.

Crystal Palace have had many more years in the top flight, have reached two Cup finals in recent years. Fulham have played in Europe a number of times albeit were pumped up by Al Fayed- but quite a bit more time in top flight- think they've also spent a decent amount of time outside the top 2 divisions so harder to gauge.

Blackburn even pre Jack Walker have spent most of their history in top 2 divisions- have a fairly strong history too. Bolton have spew

QPR have spent a lot of time in the top 2 divisions but happy to check this. Swansea have won a major trophy and spent more time in their history in top flight- Watford have reached in recent times Cup finals and semi finals- and a Cup final in 1980s, quite a bit more time in top flgiht- but their rise started in 1970s with Elton John and Graham Taylor combination.

Charlton are mismanaged, have been for a number of years but have spent a lot of time in top two Leagues.

Coventry and Ipswich likewise- Cardiff seem pretty par as you say. Coventry and Ipswich have also won major trophies- we have not.

Burnley have also won more major trophies than us in their history though that could all be history.

Portsmouth have won an FA Cup within the last 15 years. Happy to check all these clubs and top two divisions.

Success, history, catchment, fanbase, stadium are all in the mix.

More success/history = more fans

Bigger catchment = more fans

Add everything together and the only objective way to measure is average attendance.

Wigan are not bigger than us because they won the cup and neither are Burnley, Swansea etc. If they were, they would have more fans.

Swansea and Wigan I'll grant you- Burnley not so sure. Burnley's population is apparently 88,527- though some fans will doubtless come from other bits of Lancashire.

Were we to extrapolate it to attendance per say Xk then adjusted for that other side in Bristol the figures might look different again.

I post on some other forums- may ask the question there, see how we're viewed on a wider level in football, size or relative size wise.
