Just a heads up folks, Triple Captain is a bit of misnomer and isn't the typical fantasy "captain gets triple points" version. Instead, all three of your players are captained (so that version of Triple), essentially doubling all your points.

So you don't need to change anything really, it's just to let you know you'll have your whole team doubled instead of triple points for Wells / Kalas.

Hope that makes sense!

Also, @Rocking Red Cyril - a first half which included a bit of an injury left 'til the deadline (48 minutes)

Gameweek 21 Update (Wycombe H) - Cup Final Day Doesn't Disappoint

Knew I should've written this before tonight's match, 'cos now I'm just a bit grumpy... Ah well, guess it can cheer me up a bit...

*breathes*

Wait three games for a goal, and then Famara breaks the net so no-one can ever score in it again. Woohoo!

Maybe not the most convincing, admittedly, but we had chances to win more comfortably, and if we can ever just find a bit more composure at the end of moves, we might just have a chance, y'know? But this isn't a place for opinions that ultimately don't make a damned bit of difference to the outcome of some games played by an unconnected group of 20+ young men (none of us will ever be proven right, really) - this is a place for fantasy and the occasional taste of success amid the maelstrom of Championship football supporting. Here, some of us can be proven right, simply by writing a name of someone in a little box on a little box.

And boy, was there some successful right people this week.

Before the BIG EVENT reveal of the 3rd place playoff and GRAND BOXING DAY FINAL DAY, on which rested extra bonus points, let's sort the rest of us ruffians into some sort of order...

17th: @Newquay-Red18pts auto-pick (Mariappa - O'Dowda - Diédhiou) - never quite troubled the Non-Qualifier Bonus Challenge scorers in the earlier rounds, but what a way to finish. Slight #SpoilerAlert, but you did outscore the finalists (and near everybody else), earning the third highest score of the week. Maybe auto-pick is the way to go?

15th/16th place playoff: Nathandao 14 - 16 @bissellredhead
The bottom end of the playoffs, but the only two teams to include our one clean sheet earning defender, thanks(?) to Vyner's early injury. Nathan's auto-pick left the team rudderless without a captain however, so while O'Dowda earned the assist, bissell's bold choice of giving Zak the armband nudged them up to the pride-saving 15th place.
auto-pick (Vyner-O'Dowda-Semenyo) v (Vyner-Nagy-Semenyo)

13th/14th place playoff: @Dogbert 26 - 6 @Rocking Red Cyril
It may have only earned 13th place in the cup, but Dogbert smashed this week with the highest score by quite a way, one of only two to score over 20. Mainly down to the captaining of scorer and triple bonus point Martin, but an O'Dowda assist didn't go amiss, and with Cyril being left leaderless and returnless by their auto-pick it ended up pretty one-sided.
(Rowe-O'Dowda-Martin) v auto-pick (Rowe-Nagy-Semenyo)

11th/12th place playoff: @wayne allisons tongues 24 - 15 @jrt55555
Again, don't let anyone tell you these lower place playoffs don't mean anything. 11th place, but the second highest score of the week, and the highest scoring match overall. Another helping hand from Martin, wayne captaining him courtesy of the Best Of chip, while he formed part of jrt's Overload. The choice to go with Wells as captain made the difference, though, as well as Kalas boosting wayne's score with a couple of bonus points for good measure.
Best Of (Kalas-Nagy-Martin) v Overload (Martin-Semenyo-Wells)

9th/10th place playoff: @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap 15 - 8 @Chessels Chick
Top two in the league, but forced to face off for the right to be single-digitly-placed in the cup. That honour ended up in the hands of the lower placed in the league, who actually had a captainless auto-pick so may be left thinking "what-if?". Still, the Kalas-Martin synthesis was enough to nearly double the score of Chessels' returnless trio. Back to the league now, folks.
auto-pick (Kalas-Nagy-Martin) v (Hunt-Bakinson-Semenyo)

7th/8th place playoff: @Oubliette23 16 - 10 @citywest30
Last season's league champion and New Year cup holder at least finishes this year's Christmas Cup with a victory, even if it's just for 7th place. Our 3rd-place league sitter citywest put up a decent fight though, with the same exact line up, but Oubliette had held on to the Triple Captain chip just for this sort of eventuality, so ultimately couldn't be bested.
(Kalas-Nagy-Wells) v Triple Captain (Kalas-Nagy-Wells)

5th/6th place playoff: @CheddarReds 12 - 12 @RedYoshi
The tightest match-up of the lot. Cheddar, it was an honour. Quite different approaches, Cheddar cleverly captaining 2nd-best player Kalas but not getting much else, while I captained the wasteful Wells but at least had assister O'Dowda to help me out. This brought our subs into action and, as both of us needed our midfield sub anyway, Cheddar initially took the early shootout advantage courtesy of Vyner's clean sheet. But 9-point Martin slammed home the decisive penalty for me, up against the aforementioned wasteful Wells. Truly, the type of match that should always grace the, er, 5th/6th place playoff...
(Kalas[Vyner]-Nagy-Semenyo[Wells]) v (Hunt[Rowe]-O'Dowda-Wells[Martin])

3rd place playoff: @Redstart v @prankerd
Now. Now, now, now. The first of our points-at-stake games. 5 bonus points to the victor, to be exact. And prankerd left it up to chance, in the hands of an auto-pick, hoping for a fairytale "12th place beats 4th place into 4th place" story. Both captained a 2-pointer, Redstart going up top with Wells, while prankerd stayed in the middle with our Ádám. Back to defence, and Redstart ekes out a 3 point advantage, with Kalas outscoring Vyner-replacement Mariappa. So it all came down to Redstart's midfielder v prankerd's forward... Martin would likely see the fairytale come true, Diédhiou would make it interesting, anyone else would leave the door gaping for Redstart to emphasise their league standing. Especially as they had Mr. Assist O'Dowda in the middle. Which actually means prankerd needed Martin to take it to the substitute shootout...
Nope - Semenyo. And only because Martin was ineligible having had him in the team the previous two matches. But either way, it means Redstart's Kalas-O'Dowda axis secures 3rd place, and a bonus 5 points to boot. Top work!
(Kalas-O'Dowda-Wells14 - 7 auto-pick (Mariappa-Nagy-Semenyo)

GRAND FINAL: @DownendRed97 v @kelbcfc
These two, simply by reaching the final, can already relax in the knowledge that they've earned at least a bonus 10 points. It's been a hell of a run for kel, who's pretty much been top of the December charts all month so far and soared up the table in the process, while Downend's also been there or thereabouts for quite a while, earning all manner of PotW mentions and nominations. Wonderfully (for the magic of the cup, at least), it's a showdown between 6th and 10th in the league, giving perfect justification - if I say so myself - for the introduction of the bonus points. This is what they're there for, giving hope of those fairytale runs to launch people into league contention too. So, before anything else, congratulations to both.

But now the real business. Both had the rock Kalas at the back, earning them the two bonus, and both had Wells up top. It's a final for the ages. They varied in the captaining, they contrasted in midfield. Downend took a narrow lead in the middle, O'Dowda's assist giving an advantage over Nagy for kel. Into the last minutes, and kel is throwing everything forward to force extra-time... So much so, Wells gets entrusted with the armband, while Downend goes into defensive mode - bodies on the line for the cup, and the biggest body is captain Kalas.

And that's enough. Kalas' 4 points doubled, up against kel's Wells' 2, means Downend catches them on the break after a backs to the wall last 10 minutes, and ends up with quite a convincing win in the end. But kel played a huge part in an entertaining final, and more generally a great cup run, more than deserving the 10 bonus points that come along with the runner up medal.

However, there can only be one winner, so please stand and applaud our Fantastical Fantasies Christmas Cup Champion: @DownendRed97!!

*fireworks and ticker tape explode in something of an underwhelming display*

(Kalas -O'Dowda-Wells) 16 - 10 (Kalas-Nagy-Wells)

Some goals at last, high scores in low positions, and a tight, well-played final. What a cup final day. Stunning work everyone.

But what's it done to the league??

GW21.thumb.jpg.1192e667f7e20d68cd030560af1eedb8.jpg

Well, well, well. Our cup champion @DownendRed97 up to 4th, just 15pts off the top thanks to the total 31pts earned when the cup reward is taken into account.

That top spot, meanwhile, is taken by the single-digitly-cup-placed @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap, proving that the 9th/10th showdown against @Chessels Chick was about more than pride. It's still desperately tight, though, so a long way to go in that particular battle.

@Redstart's 3rd place finish is echoed in the table, dropping @citywest30 down to 5th, as runner up @kelbcfc continues their astounding rise - now into a share of 8th. @Oubliette23 maintains 6th having finished 7th, and @CheddarReds claims 7th having narrowly been beaten into 6th, staying 3pts ahead of opponent yours truly, who took 5th but stays 8th.

High scores for @Dogbert, @wayne allisons tongues & @Newquay-Red bump them all up the table at least a bit, giving hope of following in @kelbcfc's footsteps as we move into the new year.

Slight slips in the other direction for @bissellredhead & @prankerd, as @jrt55555 & @Rocking Red Cyril stay pretty much where they were... But with near everybody above 250, there really is no way of predicting anything, even if that's what we try to do every game.

Merry Bleedin' Christmas, folks.

GW21 Dream Team: Vyner (6) - O'Dowda (6) - Martin (9)

  9. Nagy 2
  10. Rowe 2

I'll probably do some retrospective PotW in a separate post at some point, to make up for my fever-addled absence and confusion during recent matches..! Thanks for the well wishes etc - normality seems to be back after a pretty horrible (and frankly BORING) two+ weeks. Stay safe out there, kids.
