Gameweek 37 Update (Blackburn A) - An Uneven Nil-Nil

An Easter egg result (0-0) for the Easter Cup.

Sure, one point apiece, but the evenness can be debated. Come off the pitch and into our speculative picks, however, and there's no debate. When the top scorer has double the points of 3rd, we know something has happened. Phwoar. Just you wait...

Match 1: @CheddarReds 16 - 5 @jrt55555
Fresh from beating jrt's joint points record from the opening week, Cheddar rubs it in with quite a comprehensive cup victory. Aided by the auto-pick leaving jrt with an unlucky 13min captain (and thus no clean sheet), Cheddar still earned their right to be 3rd top scorer thanks to the solid selection of Kalas and a shrewd captaincy of Lansbury - one of only two midfielders to earn 3pts. Onwards march for the Reds from The Gorge.

(Kalas - Lansbury - Semenyo) v auto-pick (Vyner - Nagy - Diédhiou)

Match 2: @Chessels Chick 11 - 12 @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap
The closest match of the round, earning LJFC their first trip to a QF, and all hinging on our old friend the Codfather. With Hunt securing the clean sheet for both, their captains also cancelled each other out - Chessels with Wells, LJFC with a carded Palmer - leaving us with a showdown between LJ's forward (Fam) and Chessels' midfielder. At 64mins, that was Massengo off the bench. 13-12 to Chessels. Then on comes O'Dowda, unbelievably failing to score immediately with a mere two touches, earning just the one point. Thus concludes the tale of our current leader being toppled by a former table topper.

(Hunt - O'Dowda - Wells) v (Hunt - Palmer - Diédhiou)

Match 3: @DownendRed97 8 - 13 @citywest30
Showing up my method of seeding for what it is, we have our last two cup winners butting their trophies together in the first round. One for the TV, then, and in the process the pitfalls of the Overload chip are laid bare to a wider audience. With no attacking returns, Downend's full house of forwards sadly fails to fire, meaning citywest takes the win purely due to having a defender. A bonus for Sessegnon is a nice bit of icing, and we wait to see if they'll go on to receive the whole cake of a double cup win.

Overload (Wells - Diédhiou - Semenyo) v (Sessegnon - Palmer - Diédhiou)

Match 4: @Newquay-Red 11 - 15 @wayne allisons tongues
The best auto-pick of the round, despite being left with only two players, but that wasn't enough for Newquay to overcome the Tongue Twisters. The extra player helped wayne of course, but the Sessegnon v Kalas bonus point battle ensured that the midfield discrepancy wasn't the telling blow it could otherwise have been. Certainly made it more comfortable though. A first successful Round 1 for wayne - Newquay's wait continues.

auto-pick (Sessegnon - Bakinson - Diédhiou) v (Kalas - Massengo - Semenyo)

Match 5: @bissellredhead 24 - 11 @RedYoshi
A second meeting between the two of us after bissell's triumphant ReverseSF in the Post-Holden Cup, and it was quickly apparent that I would not be avenging that defeat. Bissell showed how it's done with a better defensive pick, a superior midfield selection, and an equal forward choice, winning 12-9 just on raw scores, before putting an emphatic stamp on the outcome with a Triple Captain chip. The only choice I'm happy with was deciding not to fight fire with fire, and keeping my Triple Captain for a future disappointment instead...

Triple Captain (Kalas - Palmer - Diédhiou) v (Hunt - O'Dowda - Semenyo)

Match 6: @Rocking Red Cyril 32 - 14 @Dogbert
Talking of chips... We saw the pitfalls of the Overload earlier. We saw the pre-match struggles and "never again" sentiments of Cyril. We now see a masterstroke. I'd reconsider that Overload dismissal if I were you, Cyril. Glorious. Against the team of their ancestors, they not only benefitted from a trio of clean sheets, but chose the three who also earned all the bonus points available. The only way it could've been better would've been giving Mariappa the armband instead of Kalas, but that only would've gained a single point, and when you've got double the points of 3rd already I'm not sure one can grumble. Outstanding play.

Dogbert, on the other hand - grumble away. Joint 5th highest score of the round, would've beaten 10 other teams, one of only 3 to have a 3pt midfielder... and yet another first round exit.

Well, you could grumble, or bask in your cult hero status. Up to you.

[Near-Perfect]Overload (Mariappa - Kalas - Sessegnon) v (Sessegnon - Lansbury - Diédhiou)

Match 7: @Redstart 12 - 14 @Oubliette23
Three cups, three meetings. Redstart took the Christmas QF, Oubliette responded in Round 1 of the Post-Holden Cup, and now carries on that Round 1 success to take the lead in the head-to-head. I look forward to their battle in the Run-In Cup. For now, though, this came down to both the oft-referenced Sessegnon v Kalas bonus battle, and that dream crusher known as Callum. Redstart was on the wrong side of both. Oubliette, meanwhile, as the only one of the top 3 to make it through to the QF, is hoping to come out on the right side a few more times and pair a cup run with a table assault.

(Sessegnon - O'Dowda - Semenyo) v (Kalas - Palmer - Semenyo)

Match 8: @prankerd 13 - 7 @kelbcfc
Hold the phone, CupKel is out in the first round! Prankerd avenges the Christmas SF result even without a captain, courtesy of a Best Of defender in a 0-0 draw, while kel faced the Vyner cameo crisis. Even the sub of Hunt wouldn't have quite been enough, and you can feel the shockwaves throughout the Fantasy Cup Community. I'm sure kel will be back firing for the Run-In, but in the meantime prankerd will be hoping they've absorbed some of the cup magic and can ride this wave to the final. Well played, well played.

Best Of (Mariappa - Palmer - Diédhiou) v (Vyner - Palmer - Wells)

On to the quarters:

QF1: @CheddarReds v @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap

QF2: @citywest30 v @wayne allisons tongues

QF3: @bissellredhead v @Rocking Red Cyril

QF4: @Oubliette23 v @prankerd

Reverse

RQF1: @jrt55555 v @Chessels Chick

RQF2: @DownendRed97 v @Newquay-Red

RQF3: @RedYoshi v @Dogbert

RQF4: @Redstart v @kelbcfc

Aaaand the tabular effect:

GW37.thumb.jpeg.184ba16eb1a5f2e19506c89ad22b6728.jpeg

The whole top 6 now past 500, including @Rocking Red Cyril who launches themselves all the way from joint 11th to joint 4th. That's what I call Overloading.

@bissellredhead's chip based success also earns a place, while the rest of us either stay the same or drop, pretty much just to accommodate Cyril's siege.

Just goes to show: the right team, at the right time, and you could be winning this whole darn thing.

Cyril's now also in the driving seat for the March Manager of the Month, which will be decided today:

  1. @Rocking Red Cyril 96pts
  2. @CheddarReds 87pts
  3. @Newquay-Red 80pts
  4. @bissellredhead 76pts
  5. @DownendRed97 71pts

None of those five have come out on top of a month yet, so it's looking like we'll have a maiden monthly manager for March.

Enjoy the sport!

GW37 Dream Team: Mariappa (9) - Lansbury/Massengo (3) - Diédhiou/Semenyo/Wells (2) - but really it was Cyril's team

Gameweek 38 Update (Rotherham H) - Oh, Bother(ham)

Home is where the heart is, if the heart is a lack of goals and 0pts in six games.

Still, our 7-game losing streak away from home started with a 2-0 loss to Rotherham, so perhaps the same result will signal an end to the unenviable home run.

Back in the hunt (geddit?) tomorrow.

Against Rotherham, we had eight teams hunting for the semi-finals...

QF1: @CheddarReds 12 - 7 @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap
With neither team having made it beyond this stage previously, this was a chance to go out and get it - but in the end, Cheddar just let it come to them. An auto-pick of delight saw the highest two scorers (Lansbury and Kalas, playing a total of 58mins between them) grace the Gorge, with a doubled Henri earning one of only two double digit totals this week. LJFC did also benefit from Lansbury too, and through genuine choice to boot, but without the armband it just wasn't enough. Hunt also stuck around long enough to concede two goals, so that never helps.
auto-pick (Kalas - Lansbury - Semenyo) v (Hunt - Lansbury - Semenyo)

QF2: @citywest30 7 - 8 @wayne allisons tongues
The reigning Post-Holden holder is out! A first cup win for wayne has turned into a second, and a semi-final that has got tongues wagging. Wasn't an easy route though, with an Overload of defenders seemingly putting them on the back foot. With a point apiece from Mariappa & Sessegnon up against city's six from O'Dowda & captain Wells, the writing may have looked like it was on the wall, but in comes Ka-ptain-las to show that it was actually a perspex screen in front of said wall after all. Double thanks are owed to Tomas too, as his early withdrawal saw Vyner come on for citywest, meaning Kalas stayed on the bench with the extra two points that would've turned the game upside down. On such small details are cups won...
(Vyner - O'Dowda - Wells) v Overload (Kalas - Mariappa - Sessegnon)

QF3: @bissellredhead 5 - 9 @Rocking Red Cyril
For the second cup in a row, these two meet in the quarter-final - and it's the same story (if a bit closer this time). Never mind their heads, Bissell will be going red in the face at the sight of Cyril soon, as that man Kalas is the difference maker in yet another game. Even without the honour of skippering the Rocking Reds, his 3pts would've been enough to get Cyril to a second consecutive semi-final, where last cup's bronze medallists hope to go at least one better.
(Sessegnon - Massengo - Semenyo) v (Kalas - Palmer - Wells)

QF4: @Oubliette23 5 - 6 @prankerd
Oubliette takes Bissell's red face and turns it towards quarter-finals in general. That's three in a row, and no luck in any of them. Prankerd the beneficiary this time, quite fittingly as I write this on April Fools'. Another auto-pick success as it happens, and another Lansbury appearance. The lack of captain was a shame though, and looked likely to give Oubliette the advantage, but you know that luck I was talking about? Yeah, Diédhiou didn't make 60mins, did he? Pretty sure 20secs would've made all the difference... No complaints from the Pranksters, riding Henri's success into the semis.
(Sessegnon - Massengo - Diédhiou) v auto-pick (Mariappa - Lansbury - Diédhiou)

Which all means we are guaranteed a maiden cup winner on Monday, and it'll be one of these four:

SFA: @CheddarReds v @wayne allisons tongues
SFB: @Rocking Red Cyril v @prankerd

Place your bets!

In reverse:

RSFA: @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap v @citywest30
RSFB: @bissellredhead v @Oubliette23

And elsewhere, a quick trip around the grounds:

RQF1: @jrt55555 3 - 6 @Chessels Chick
One in every three auto-picks don't end well. Facts. A low-scoring affair, perhaps leaving Chessels with Triple Captain regret... Still, a win's a win.
auto-pick (Vyner - Bakinson - Diédhiou) v Triple Captain (Sessegnon - Palmer - Semenyo)

RQF2: @DownendRed97 6 - 6 @Newquay-Red
More Triple Captain regret, this time for Downend, and Newquay even took it to a Substishootout™ thanks to King of the Short Appearance Kalas. 97 was a good year for subs though, Downend taking it 8-3. If only they'd been on the pitch...
Triple Captain (Sessegnon[Kalas] - Palmer[Lansbury] - Semenyo[Diédhiou]) v (Kalas[Vyner] - Palmer[Bakinson] - Semenyo[Wells])

RQF3: @RedYoshi 12 - 6 @Dogbert
The Triple Captain regret to end all Triple Captain regret, thanks to my insensitive and rude playing of the Best Of chip to land a Lansbury. Sorry, Dogbert.
Best Of (Kalas - Lansbury - Semenyo) v Triple Captain (Sessegnon Palmer - Diédhiou)

RQF4: @Redstart 4 - 6 @kelbcfc
All in the defence, this one, and all decided in those fateful 27mins that Kalas lasted. A first cup without kel in the final, but they've bounced back from the exit quickly.
(Hunt - Palmer - Diédhiou) v (Kalas - Palmer - Diédhiou)

Meaning...

2RSFA: @Chessels Chick v @DownendRed97
2RSFB: @RedYoshi v @kelbcfc

3RSFA: @jrt55555 v @Newquay-Red
3RSFB: @Dogbert v @Redstart

Very egg-citing.

Anyway, dinner's ready! (To the table...)

GW38.thumb.jpeg.cf98ff41cb3a2c15d11f0feffb69c4f9.jpeg

It's certainly rocking for @Rocking Red Cyril, as they take sole ownership of that 4th place, with the three ahead unmoved. @prankerd moves on to the semis but falls out of the 500+ top 10, with @CheddarReds replacing them in style, just gaining that one point psychological advantage over semi-final opponent @wayne allisons tongues.

Not much else to report, aside from the outcome of March's Manager of the month, which goes to...

@Rocking Red Cyril:banana: with a whopping 105pts.

@CheddarReds wasn't far behind with 99pts, ahead of @Newquay-Red (86) & @bissellredhead (81).

Keep picking & egg licking, and fingers crossed it's a gooood Friday tomorrow...
