Gameweek 39 Update (Stoke H) - Not a Good Friday

Not many quality crosses, and in the end we got nailed. Let's roll back the boulder and see the results...

Triple Reverse Semi-Finals

@jrt55555 7 - 10 @Newquay-Red
auto-pick (Kalas - Bakinson - Wells) v (Vyner - Palmer - Semenyo)

@Dogbert 9 - 10 @Redstart
(Hunt - Massengo - Wells) v (Mariappa - Palmer - Wells)

Double Reverse Semi-Finals

@Chessels Chick 13 - 10 @DownendRed97
(Vyner - Palmer - Semenyo) v auto-pick (Kalas - Palmer - Diédhiou)

@RedYoshi 13 - 4 @kelbcfc
(Hunt - Palmer - Wells) v (Vyner - Lansbury - Diédhiou)

Reverse Semi-Finals

@LeeJohnsonsFlatCap 10 - 6 @citywest30
(Simpson - Palmer - Wells) v (Mariappa - Lansbury - Wells)

@bissellredhead 11 - 10 @Oubliette23
(Kalas - Massengo - Semenyo) v (Vyner - Palmer - Wells)

ACTUAL SEMI-FINALS

@CheddarReds 10 [5] - [1] 10 @wayne allisons tongues
As tight as a semi can get. Adrian v Mariappa, Kasey v Palmer, Nahki v Wells. No separating these two as they battled tooth and nail for that debut final... In the end, we were inevitably sent to a nervy Substishootout™ where - once Vyner & Simpson had traded single point blows - Cheddar said cheese and left a nasty taste on wayne's tongue. Massengo's 3pts were decisive, meaning the lack of Who-kins, Where-kins, Watkins was immaterial for wayne in the end. Still the bronze to go for, as Cheddar aims for a maiden trophy.
(Mariappa - Palmer - Wells)       v       (Mariappa - Palmer - Wells)
[Vyner - Massengo - Diédhiou]           [Simpson - Walsh - Watkins]

@Rocking Red Cyril 6 - 7 @prankerd
Crikey o'riley, someone should consider changing their name to luckerd. Not to say that this isn't deserved, but two consecutive single-point auto-pick wins to reach the final? Stuff of legend. To rub salt in Cyril's second semi-final wounds, prankerd managed it without a defender - with Mariappa ineligible, our victor relied solely on Palmer and Wells, eschewing a captain in the same breath. While RRC looked to be smiling due to their successful acquisition of the aforementioned defender, Walsh's absence meant they were left with a yellow-carded Lansbury, and double points from Wells just wasn't enough to claw back the deficit.
(Mariappa - Lansbury - Wells) v auto-pick (Mariappa - Palmer - Wells)

Sadly, I was looking forward to being able to write something along the lines of: "nobody foresaw the brilliance of Bell!" ... but we all know the outcome of that. D'oh.

But take a gander at our sparkling finals:

15th/16th Playoff: @jrt55555 v @Dogbert - despite their record, Dogbert is yet to claim a wooden spoon, while jrt won this match last cup... Up. For. Grabs.

13th/14th Playoff: @Newquay-Red v @Redstart - "the league takes priority" is their rallying call

11th/12th Playoff: @DownendRed97 v @kelbcfc - Easter is a far cry from Christmas, eh? Finalists on Jesus' birthday - not as big fans of whatever he was up to today.

9th/10th Playoff: @Chessels Chick v @RedYoshi - completes the familial match-up trilogy. Wagon Wheels at the ready.

7th/8th Playoff: @citywest30 v @Oubliette23 - repeat of the Christmas 7th/8th playoff. Can Oubliette repeat the feat, or will citywest avenge defeat?

5th/6th Playoff: @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap v @bissellredhead - who doesn't wanna be top 5? Whatever happens, they can be proud of their run, with just one loss apiece.

3rd Place Playoff: @wayne allisons tongues v @Rocking Red Cyril - can Cyril earn a second bronze, or will wayne's hunger shine through after two previous 11th/12th playoffs...?

GRAND FINAL: @CheddarReds v @prankerd - a new champ shall be crowned. This is what Easter Monday is ALL ABOUT.

Good luck all!

Low-scoring match = barely any change. In fact, the only movement is a switcheroo between @kelbcfc and myself, as though our double reverse semi was a boxing match or something, and I've nicked their belt.

@Oubliette23 storing up those chips for a late challenge at the top perhaps? @CheddarReds and/or @prankerd hoping for a cup triumph trampoline effect? And @Rocking Red Cyril is a bronze medal away from either the top 3, or being caught by contender @wayne allisons tongues...

We trundle on, and hope at least for goals.

GW39 Dream Team: Kalas (3) - Palmer (5) - Semenyo/Wells (2)

Is that Triple Captain on Fam? Reminder that the TC chip is for all three players to earn double, not one player to earn triple... Starting to think maybe I should rename the chip :bonkers:

We shall see if @prankerd's TC hopes are fulfilled in the morning...

For now though:

PEU v Nottingham Forest (deadline 2pm)

@bissellredhead, @DownendRed97 - cannot select Kalas

@Newquay-Red - cannot select Vyner

@Oubliette23, @RedYoshi, @wayne allisons tongues - cannot select Palmer

@Rocking Red Cyril - cannot select Wells

@prankerd - cannot select Palmer or Wells

@CheddarReds - cannot select Mariappa, Palmer or Wells

Choice of all the trees in the forest: @Chessels Chick, @citywest30, @Dogbert, @jrt55555, @kelbcfc, @LeeJohnsonsFlatCap, @Redstart

Also, we can officially welcome Tommy Conway to the game, as a lesser-spotted FORWARD option. Huzzah!

Gameweek 40 Update (Coventry A) - Well, We Scored

So much for the cup-linked superstition... R1: 0-0, QF: 0-2, SF: 0-2, F: 1-3. Eesh.

But a goal! Did wonders for a few of us, nothing for others, and proved pointless in reality. At least there are some points on show for us.

15th/16th:
@jrt55555 4 - 6 @Dogbert
Still no wooden spoon for Dogbert! Almost feels like a game you don't wanna win, and jrt corrected that mistake from the last cup, auto-picking their way to a booby prize. Even Dogbert's zero-point captain (not the only one) couldn't do anything about it, thanks mainly to being one of only two players to pick 3-bonus Mariappa.
auto-pick (Vyner - Nagy - Diédhiou) v (Mariappa - Palmer - Semenyo)

13th/14th:
@Newquay-Red 11 - 7 @Redstart
Another auto-pick paying off, but this time in the more traditional form of a win. Wells essentially did it all on his own, earning Newquay a match-winning 8pts off the bench, but I suppose 2nd place Redstart has got bigger fish to fry...
auto-pick (Vyner - Lansbury - Wells) v (Kalas - Massengo - Semenyo)

11th/12th:
@DownendRed97 7 - 18 @kelbcfc
Generally, there's not much you can do up against a Triple Captain chip. That said, had Downend gone for Wells over Semenyo it would have been enough to steal a win. They didn't, though, so kel's inclusion of Palmer didn't do any harm and they end an uncharacteristic cup run on a high, avenging that previous final defeat.
(Kalas - Massengo - Semenyo) v Triple Captain (Kalas Palmer - Wells)

9th/10th:
@Chessels Chick 5 - 3 @RedYoshi
The curse of being the youngest - always get beaten (up). Was always playing catch-up once my captain was on the bench, so him coming on and getting booked really didn't help matters. To rub it in, Chessels had the youngest starter, and his two points proved to be the difference - using my own against me.
(Sessegnon - Massengo - Diédhiou) v (Kalas - Palmer - Semenyo)

7th/8th:
@citywest30 5 - 3 @Oubliette23
A lower-scoring reverse of the Christmas edition of this match. Again, it was that young man with the hair that made all the difference, with a match up in attack and an equal in defence leaving it all down to that midfield battle.
(Vyner - Massengo - Diédhiou) v (Sessegnon - Palmer - Diédhiou)

5th/6th:
@LeeJohnsonsFlatCap 8 - 4 @bissellredhead
Another Triple Captain chip played, but without Wells it was there to be shot at. Fortunately for LJFC, they didn't have Palmer dragging the score down further, and bissell didn't have Wells either, so the trio of single pointers in bissell's team fell short.
Triple Captain (Kalas Massengo - Diédhiou) v (Kalas - Nagy - Diédhiou)

3rd Place Playoff:
@wayne allisons tongues @Rocking Red Cyril
5 extra points on the line here, and it started off neck-and-neck... Kalas v Kalas, off the mark, 1-1. Nothing spectacular, but it's nice to be on the board. Then wayne joined the rest of us let down by Palmer, though at least without the captain's armband. RRC did decide to lead from the middle, but safely avoided Palmer, doubling up on Massengo for a 5-1 lead. All down to the forwards. One had Wells. The other didn't. And we know wayne skippered their striker...

...and that was Diédhiou. Unlucky, wayne. Rocking rocked with Wells, ending up with quite a comprehensive victory and two consecutive bronze medals. Well played, well played.
(Kalas - Palmer - Diédhiou) 3 - 13 (Kalas - Massengo - Wells)

GRAND FINAL:
@CheddarReds @prankerd
Here we are. Prankerd, the auto-pick connoisseur, Triple Captaining against - that's right - an auto-pick from Cheddar. Wow-wa-wee-wah! That makes it two auto-picks apiece during this cup, and the only player who made more was in the wooden spoon match... Quite a turn up to find them both in the final.

Now, as we've heard before, there's not much you can do up against a Triple Captain chip. Especially when they have Wells up top. 16 points straight off the bat for prankerd. But, ya know, one thing you can do is have an auto-captained Wells yourself. Sheesh. 16-16 and most people still aren't in their seats. Who says finals disappoint? We're already the highest scoring match of the week, and that's with just one player.

Still, with two more captains to come from prankerd, it's surely just delaying the inevitable. Which is delayed a little further by the selection of Palmer in midfield, nullifying any doubling action. A chance for Cheddar to take advantage and... nope, it's Palmer again. 16-16 after two.

To the defence, then. I mentioned earlier that only two players picked Mariappa and his three bonus points. One of our finalists was the second. With every other defender earning just a single point, "Mapps" would be the only way Cheddar could win. In the chipped up hands of prankerd, he'd lead to an unbeatable total of 24. The desperate shout rings out from both players... "Adriaaaaaaan...."

*drumroll* .... The auto-pick takes it, folks! Up against prankerd's strategic & self-proclaimed "sneaky" Triple Captain, CheddarReds used the power of the auto-pick to defeat one of its most successful proponents. Hope for all the underdogs out there, and one hell of a final. Hopefully your bonus 10pts is enough of a consolation, prank, as Cheddar takes the full 15.

A round of applause from all of us.

auto-pick (Mariappa - Palmer - Wells20 - 18 Triple Captain (Sessegnon - Palmer - Wells)

:winner_third_h4h:@CheddarReds:winner_third_h4h:

Wow. Some excitement from this match in the end then, eh? Fittingly only the winner had our two best players, with only five overall picking Wells, and just those two with Mariappa (in the final and the wooden spoon match, as it happens).

Quite a mix up in the league...

GW40.thumb.jpg.e59e1ebeff4ea3ee97cf7b5ca78d11ea.jpg

Our cup champion flies up six places into third, our third place maintains fourth, while our runner up is launched seven places to round out the top five.

The rest of us pretty much slide down varying amounts to accommodate these fancy cup competitors, aside from @kelbcfc who swaps places with me - again.

@Chessels Chick's lead is shaved ever so slightly at the top, giving @Redstart just enough hope to go all out for these last 6 matches... but now @CheddarReds and their fellow cup successes are so close behind, it's certainly not over.

Quick, quick, kick off approaching...

GW40 Dream Team: Mariappa (4) - Massengo (2) - Wells (8)

Points Breakdown

  1. Wells 8 (g, 2bp)

Gameweek 41 Update (Forest H) - It... Um... Well There Was... Er... Y'know, That Bit When... Hmm...

Very little idea what happened in this match - I've forgotten it already.

All I know is that I've been Fantasy Sulking for the week. You'll see why.

No cup games to report, @CheddarReds is still chugging champagne/appletiser, so let's get on with it...

Nathandao: 6pts auto-pick (Vyner - Paterson Martin)

@Newquay-Red20pts (Simpson - Palmer - Semenyo)

@Dogbert24pts Overload (Kalas - Vyner - Simpson)

Yep, there I am, the only one who picked a defender in a 0-0 and didn't get a clean sheet, thanks to neither Mariappa nor Sessegnon playing. Cheers, Nige.

Kel joined me thanks to an Overload at the wrong end of the pitch, while Dogbert finally succeeded in tempting the fates and took ownership of our missing defenders to top the week with an outstanding opposite Overload. That's what they're there for.

A week late, but prankerd outdid Cheddar's auto-pick this time, with an auto-pick of their own, while Redstart had an even better auto-pick to chip another 3pts into Chessels' league lead. Every little helps.

Talking of the league...

GW41.thumb.jpeg.a0b4b53902278acd307f81c3a325836c.jpeg

As I sink like a stone, @Newquay-Red leapfrogs @prankerd & @Oubliette23 to break into the top 5, and @DownendRed97 also makes up two positions to 8th.

A week of twos, as @Dogbert follows suit up to 12th, and @bissellredhead is just two points off the 500 mark.

At the other end, @Chessels Chick has 5 games to get the 7pts to 600, and @Redstart's remaining Triple Captain chip is starting to look like it might be pivotal...

It's getting to business time!

GW41 Dream Team: any defender but Hunt, or the two I picked (6) - Palmer (6) - Semenyo/Wells (2) - but really just do a Dogbert
