Whether its true or not, I read Exeter get £6 million.

Personally, I don’t think Villa are the right club for him, Brentford played to his strengths, I can’t see Villa being able too.

Local rag down here reporting the Grecians will get £4.2m on the initial £28m fee, based on15% sell on. Plus a cut of the extras if applicable.

Will make a huge difference in a Covid world I’d imagine!

Their turnover in 18/19 was £4.0m....huge income for a Lg2 side.  Fair play ??????

Get your facts right...Eze wanted a club in/near London ,we looked at him as did a number of clubs but we are not close enough to London....We bid for Watkins but HE chose Brentford ...

My understanding was Brentford offered a higher sell-on fee, but a lower transfer fee than us.

Exeter ‘gambled’ on better player development at Brentford than us. That decision has clearly paid dividends for them.

Watkins is a Newton Abbot lad. Thought Bristol would’ve been as attractive as London to a West Country boy.

Tisdale allegedly set stuff up for him in London, like Ted Baker deals, etc....think the view was he’d develop quicker / further at Brentford and longer term that would be better for Exeter and the player.  Hard to disagree, even if we are getting better in that area.

If you’re a Lg2 player, you are gonna look at Eisa and Szmodics and question whether City is gonna help you fulfil your ambitions.  Whilst the City model might make a few quid and have a future interest through sell-ons, there’s a downside to attracting players if they do their own due diligence.

Yes, very much the downside of the strategy to stockpile players as assets that might appreciate in value.

Hopefully that is a thing of the past, as recent recruitment suggests.

Brentford do what we do but better.

If we could find say the assistant head of recruitment there, pay them a lot of money and give them the top job here that would be a great bit of business!

Not that simple our scouting and recruiting is merged into our owners business that specialise in statistics. As Chris Wilder commented a few years back when someone suggested he follow our model he replied he would need to employ over 200 people. We have 2 DoFs and a head of recruitment along with many overseas scouts and remember Matthew Benham also owns Danish side Midtjylland who we have close links to hence the amount of Scandinavian players and coaches we have.Sadly we lost our head of recruitment Rob Rowan a few years back who at 28 died very young and then Andy Scott who moved to Swansea both big losses but we have managed to keep our shape.

The media like to highlight our success impressive as it is we do get many of these “punts” on promising players wrong but financially we are  in credit.I do believe Oli Watkins will do well at Villa and hope he goes on to play for England as I believe he is PL class.

A reminder to our fans that it's certainly not a perfect science is needed. Or you'd be in the Prem by now. But of the people doing it, you certainly get the most right.

200 x an average of let's say £40000 is £8 million a year. I think that's potentially a good investment!

Losing people and continuing is the aim really. We need someone to set this up correctly though.

Quite right and the expectations from our fans isn’t that high although that seems to be changing as the NEW fans arrive

And don’t believe everything that ‘Club Representatives’ have to put out on social media.
Eze wasn’t wanted by our academy coaches. They 100% turned him down. I know of some club representatives who were absolutely livid that he was let go.
But the decision makers made their decision.

3 hours ago, Phileas Fogg said:

I think this is true but we had opportunity to pick him up and he was recommended to the club long before Brentford came in. @Harry / @redcherryberry will be able to confirm whether this is correct.

One thing lots of people forget too is the appeal of playing for a London club. Bristol is a nice city, but it isn't as glamorous as London for many young players. Brentford will often be able to beat us to players simply due to this.

Certainly it’s true that Ollie was enticed by the London lure, and that Tisdale had set him up with some Ted Baker work experience in the summer prior to his leaving.
So the Ollie story is indeed true that Brentford were chosen above us, however that isn’t the wholesomely accurate granular detail.
Problem is, City were too late to the party and we didn’t have a very good relationship with Exeter, despite me pleading with them to do so. Ollie should’ve been taken the year before (at least), when there was no interest from Brentford. I personally had conversations with a representative of Ollie and the conversation was very much around how keen a move to City would be. This was over a year before Brentford signed him. He’d been watched keenly since 3 years before when on loan at Weston (and also I know a personal and very very close mate of Ollie’s so I know he was coming highly recommended and was gonna go far).
Our business with Exeter absolutely stinks. We had plenty of chances to develop a relationship but we were never interested in doing so - yeah, scout a few games, watch a few players and then think we’re billy big balls and snap our fingers when we want one of them. Sorry, Exeter don’t work like that - we needed to be ‘in’ with them, and we weren’t. Despite me (and my scouting fellowship) pleading us to do so.
I heard so many times down there that other clubs scouts were saying, to the tune of “you’re only up the road, why aren’t you picking these lads up”

Watkins could have been ours a year before Brentford.
Grimes could’ve been ours a year before Swansea.
Ampadu was never gonna be an option, but if we had a relationship you never know. Highly doubtful on that one though.
Jordan Storey could’ve been another, way before his move to Preston.

Anyway, all ancient history now. A disappointing period for our recruitment that was, I can tell you!!

Just a note on Aston Villa.

I don't know if their fans have some issues with cognitive dissonance but they keep saying they have a low wage bill- or maybe it's true, maybe they pay higher fees but low wages? Quite a few seem to suggest that their wage bill is or was 3rd lowest in PL last season!

Needless to say I hope they go down, but I think Watkins will/could do alright in PL.

@Bill the Bee Do you think Benrahma will get sold too! Financially looking from the outside, is there any need?

Not sure Dave, the players mentioned will all be significantly richer for their time with City despite barley playing and as we know it’s a money world for the majority

The chairman was on Westcountry earlier saying £4m so that sounds about right. Fair play to them.

I think Jordan Storey was first at Yeovil Town’s centre of excellence. It’s telling that when the ceo at Yeovil was folded in 2013,Exeter and Rovers invited a lot of lads for trials to their clubs. City showed no interest whatsoever!

Villa paying over the top again for a championship striker, Watkins is a excellent player but £30m+ is ridiculous

Leeds paid £27m for Rodrigo, a Spanish international, played against Germany last week. We've also bought a German international CB for £12m

The British market is so inflated, the transfer fees are not good value. It's not as if we have the best footballers in Europe/World, you only watch England to see how average we are!

You go to bed dreaming about Aston Villa don't you?

the Villa wage bill will be affected by FFP - which you seemingly spend all your time drooling over - so won't be the highest by quite some distance. Also, clubs like Burnley, Southampton, palace and so on will all have higher wage earners. If villa stay up over the next couple of seasons then the wage bill will increase due to the financial benefit of staying in the Prem.

But this hard on you have for Aston Villa needs to be let go. The love is unrequited and I think they've moved on from you.

Yes 100% and won’t play another game for us I believe.Im not that bothered as I’ve written off this season with all this playing without crowds. It was bad enough not saying a proper goodbye to Griffin Park and now can’t go to the new stadium is unreal. That was far worse than losing in the play off final for me.With Tawkoski looking set to move from Burnley for 30 mill ++ we have a 20% sell on we won’t starve for a while. Was good to see Exeter have got a good 4 mill + from the Watkins deal plenty of div 1 & 2 clubs could do with the same poor buggers

Been supeseded to a point in my, er, 'affections' by Derby now! ?

Well it'd have been interesting to see what would have happened if Aston Villa had dropped straight back, especially in these Covid times and the continuity of losses between the two divisions, the rolling up etc. Might have been problematic.

Yes you're right mostly. I also have a small hope that hubris will take over and the wage bill and amortisation will shoot up, and when they come down big problems! Or big sales needed at least.

I also hope Derby's multi financial loan arrangement will go pop and they will reap the consequences. Aston Villa are the spawniest club though- the spawniest around.

Technically I’m saying what he will put out in the media will be in the best interests of protecting the club and it’s reputation.
So not ‘lying’ as such, just publicity.

But yes, what he said in that tweet isn’t true - and I know he knows it.
