If by League we mean the entire football league, then it would have been for a short spell in the 1906/07 season when we ended up second.

If  you mean the EFL since the prem broke away, possibly a week or two in 2007/08 before dropping to the P/Os.

We went top after beating Cardiff in the season we were relegated.

No its not. Its the record in the games between the 2 clubs tied, that season. 

Obviously that's not yet relevant this season, but that's the next deciding factor, before away goals scored comes into play.

Yes, it seems so, although the league rule wording for these later diciders is worded as being at the end of the season. 

I think Alphabetical is far fairer at this stage of the season..! ??
