Stats on Radio 5 today

Two interesting facts stated today.

"Today the 200,000th Football League game will be played". The announcer then took delight in saying "Over three quarters of these were played before the Premiership existed".

Today is Neil Warnock's 1,500th game as a Manager. Neil then informed listeners:

"This record will probably never be beaten as Managers don't last long any more. I always ask for a minimum of three years before taking up an appointment".

Read some other stats about the 200,000 games

1-1 has been the most common score.

Preston has played the most games, 5,010.

Everton v Aston Villa is the most played fixture, 204.

Man U has won the most games.

Peter Shilton holds the record for most league appearances, over 1000.  Can’t remember the exact number

Joe Payne scored the most goals in a game 10, for Luton v you know who

Preston,Burnley and Sheffield United have played all their home games at their original grounds

And Bristol Rovers has played their home games at more different grounds than anybody else.  Eastville, Ashton Gate, Trumpton and The Memorial Ground.

(I made the last one up, but it might be true)

I think Coventry might equal that last one with Highfield Rd, Ricoh Stadium, Northampton and St Andrews

Charlton too - The Valley, Upton Park, Selhurst Park. I don`t know if they had any others in their early days.

They also played at The Mount in Catford for a few years.

Man Utd have hosted home league games at 6 grounds which is the most I know of:

  • North Road
  • Bank Street
  • Old Trafford
  • Maine Road
  • Anfield
  • Victoria Ground

Spurs have also used 4 grounds as home grounds:

  • White Hart Lane
  • New Wembley
  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Highbury

As have Bradford:

  • Valley Parade
  • Odsal
  • Elland Road
  • Leeds Road

And Middlesbrough:

  • Linthorpe Road
  • Ayresome Park
  • Victoria Park
  • Riverside Stadium

There's probably loads more with at least 4 but I'm not sure any team has played home league games at more stadiums than Man Utd.

Coventry also 6 grounds:

Dowells Field: 1883–1887
Stoke Road: 1887–1899

Highfield Road: 1899–2005

"Premiership"?

The announcer is having a mare... mixing the English Football League with The Scottish or Rugby Union top leagues?

Only 4 in the football league though. If you want to include grounds played in before a club was a member of the football league then Fulham have played at at least 12 grounds and QPR have played in 14, so one of those teams is probably the record-holder.

In the 70s man united, also hosted a european home game at home park plymouth.

They had to play so far out of manchester, due to crowd trouble, in the previous game.

That left 2 grounds, home park, or brunton park, carlise.

Are you telling me Carlisle is as far away from Manchester as Plymouth? Without looking at a map that doesn’t seem right?

Had a year playing at The Mount Stadium in Catford 1923-4. Their kit was light blue and dark blue vertical stripes.
