Kasey Palmer to Swansea Confirmed - Season Long Loan

I think it was you, Dave, who described our midfield 3 in broad terms as one holding, one creative, one runner. As I see it, this now looks like:

Holding: Bakinson, Brunt (Williams/Massengo/Nagy)

Creative: Paterson, Walsh (Nagy)

Runner: Weimann, Williams (Massengo)

Broad descriptions only. Williams is more than just a runner, as is Weimann tbf when you consider the goals he brings.

Massengo and Nagy very much last in line for me. I'd much prefer it to have been Nagy leaving instead of Morrell but I think it's best to let go of that one. What's done is done.

As for Palmer, the pass for Rowe to score at Birmingham and the pass for Brownhill to score at home against ??? were Premier League class in their vision and execution but he simply hasn't done enough to warrant a run in the side and has proved an astronomical waste of money.

Swansea may have a great season, even without Palmer, but they can only take 1 of the top 6 positions - that still leaves another 5 places up for grabs. They could have a great season and Palmer make a massive contribution along the way - on the avaiilable evidence, this seems unlikely and so our decision to let him go to a rival is - on balance - a calculated, but understandable, gamble. If I was going to have a bet, I'd say Swansea will be there or thereabouts and Palmer will perform just as he has everywhere else he's been.

I think both box to box players have to be runners.

For me Weimann, Paterson, Williams, O'Dowda, Massengo and Nagy all runners. They all run a lot all game. But of course there's much more to it than just running, but I think they all have very good work rate and stamina.

Walsh might be. He always seemed a very hard worker but not played that role for us before. For Coventry they had others doing more of the pressing side of things in advanced areas and getting back supporting the midfield defensively.

Walsh and Kelly in a double pivot I don't think had the same workload as what Walsh would have in a box to box role with us. So will be interesting to see on that.

Palmer, Bakinson and Brunt maybe not runners so much. I'm not sure Bakinson can get through the same work as the others in that box to box role, which doesn't really matter as he doesn't play there. Though he is hard working for sure, he isn't one that can relentlessly run sprint around all game.

Palmer obviously we know about. And Brunt at his age might be effective there late in games as a sub, not so sure from the start. And looks like he's a back up option to Bakinson or a good versatile sub late in games in a few positions.

Nah, not me....I dislike the terminology as much as the latest vogue for calling it “a 6 and two 8s”.  I’m old skool.  I get why people have described them like this, and I get the blend.  They aren’t wrong, I just don’t like it per se.  Silly old fart that I am!

They are just midfielders to me, asked to play in a way to benefit the team.  And it is exactly that pigeon-holing of a player like Williams who has so many facets to his game that slightly frustrates me. 😂😂😂

Starting Williams will be like having a new signing.

I'm waiting for someone to be an 8.5, not quite a 10 but more than an 8

Another creative player gone. Wont be missed as he wasn't given a real chance but feel we may regret letting him go to a rival.

Do think we are lacking that bit of spark/creativity in the squad.

Just out of interest, how many hours of first team play do you consider "a real chance"?

Certainly were interested last season & might lose Rodon, who although a CB, would free up funds, plus are still trying to offload Ayew who is on something crazy like £80k a week.

Would be best all round if true but not sure Swansea have paid a fee for anyone in ages.

Kasey is probably costing us more in real terms!

Given how infrequently he plays and he is rumoured to be amongst the biggest earners, wages to games is probably 100k+ per 1st team appearance.

I think this could be a really good opportunity for him to get his mojo back (ala Paterson). It's a loan so if he does well there, we can either recall him in January and have a new player on form (if we need to and can utilise him in our system/instructions) or sell him come the end of the season and free up the wages. I'm assuming Swansea will be contributing to his salary so that is also a bonus to us at the moment.

Let's be honest, with the season so far, it didn't look like he was going to get in to our starting 11 regularly and given his age and wages, he should be starting regularly somewhere.

Good luck Kasey. No doubt you'll score on your debut and Otib Will meltdown.

He's still the same promising player he was when he arrived. No progress yet.

I like him but he has to add more to his overall game. Still needs to prove he's worth a starting place. He's got the ability to be a teams star man.

Not sure if he's improved since Huddersfield days.

When we signed him that was my worry. No sign of improvement from 19 or whatever he was at Huddersfield. So is he going to ever improve?

I think he still hoped / had a desire that would get a game for us this season and so I’m glad it’s only a loan as it will give him playing time. I think like many players he needs a run of games in the right formation . Hopefully (like Pato) he will get his mojo back.  Good luck to him.
