I'll add a FIT Billy Mercer into the equation, when fit, he's the best keeper we've had in ages, pity he wasn't fit too often! :(

me too mate. probably best keeper I've seen for us since I started watching ( early 90's) but I did love Adriano as well... particularly his "for the camera" specials ??

Nicest bloke ever basso but one of worst goalkeepers ever had in past 30 years

You've had a mare and you can't even hide behind a "I didn't say he was THE worst, just one of the worst" retort because every single one of us on this forum who is forty and over and has watched City regularly could name 10 significantly worse keepers who have played for us without even giving it serious thought!!

Yes, Basso was a bit of a "Camera Keeper" and clearly more of a shot stopper than a dominant keeper (an area where Bentley needs to show more consistency to get to the next level as it happens) but in simple terms, without even looking at technique, was he generally reliable or did he regularly cost us points? At the end of the day Managers have to consider that when they judge their keepers - no good having a technically perfect keeper who is a bit weak mentally and makes occasional ricks that cost you ten points per season (Jack Butland over the last couple of seasons comes to mind). Basso, if nothing else, was mentally strong and confident, had the TRUST of the defenders in front of him which is massive and I don't recall him costing us that many points but do remember him making saves that won us games. My main criticism of him was that he was a bit susceptible to picking up an injury yet had the knack of being fighting fit three days later!! In other words he was a bit softer than I would like my Goalkeeper to be. That said, overall he was in credit in my view.

Have another go..................

Other Keepers I can remember:

Marinovic - one of the most entertaining nights of my life watching him - in all seriousness it shows how bad nerves can ruin a footballer

Keith Welch - porn star tache - plenty of talent but didn't kick on as much as he might have

David James - we bought a Mercedes without taking our mate the mechanic along who would have warned us it was 150 miles away from the Cam Belt snapping

Dean Gerken - huge talent but he managed to hit every single level between World Beater and Panel Beater in his time with us

Flapper - confident lad, great shot stopper but was not able to dominate his penalty area hence a solid enough lower league keeper

Heaton - you could see the Premier League talent but with us, for some reason, he was a bit like Flapper in that he loved to stay on his line - maybe it was our back four!!

Billy Mercer - all the talent you could ever ask for but he got crocked early doors with us and never recovered

Frank - reliable and solid - never pulled up trees but a Managers dream as a keeper because he would give you 7-8/10 every week with the odd 5 and the odd 10 thrown in once or twice a season

O'Donnell - flattered to deceive. Decent lower league keeper.

Lucic - who? Not good enough for Bayern so was never going to be good enough for us...........

Moller - huge presence and a class keeper in a poor side at the top level.

John Shaw - the only decent keeper Scotland ever produced.

Keith Waugh - as a lower league keeper you won't get much better than him.

Maaenpaa - the definition of a solid keeper and liked to come for a cross.

Bentley - has the talent to get to the next level but needs to cut out the occasional errors and dominate a little bit more on a consistent basis.

..........and then we have another 30 keepers that RedWhitePurple has clearly forgotten about when bagging Basso but thankfully I have managed to forget them!!

Can't argue with any of that. Moller, Shaw and Waugh were before my time though (Welch was number 1 when I started to take an interest), but that's a pretty good summing up of everyone else.

Flapper was fine for the level we were at at the time, but he had no competition for his spot for so long.

Mercer was a better all round keeper than him, but he was forever injured, and I just remember getting stop gap loan keepers to sit on the bench in case Steve was injured.  Incidentally a few of those loan keepers around that time actually went on to be very good solid keepers at this level, or played in the Prem!!

Basso came along, took Flaps' spot, he threw his toys out of the pram, and long story short ended up playing at a few teams lower down the chain than us - including Bristol Rovers 2015. Not as good as he thought he was after all!!

Waugh was the 'keeper when I started going down and I can't remember him being anything other than a solid custodian.  Welch was decent as well despite a penchant for letting in shots from range (if my memory serves correctly).  Most of our 'duffers' have been back-up keepers I would suggest (and we've had a few decent ones there too, Naylor, Stowell etc never let us down)
