He seems to have settled in Turkey and is trying his best to put the dark times behind him whilst acknowledging that he is only one wrong life choice away from going back there. A very mature interview and I hope we see him back playing in England one day.

He was one of the best young players I’ve ever seen play for us. I hope he continues to do well.

I struggle to think of a better young player we've had on loan in my 20+ years watching. In terms of all-round game, I'd probably put him above Tammy Abraham even.

I always remember, in a match away at Reading, him playing a one-two in the middle of the park, going through down the left hitting the crossbar with a ridiculous chip. It was just... wow. I'd go as far as saying most strikers we've had across the past two decades were incapable of showing that kind of finesse in front of goal, let alone this being a 19-year-old centre-half!

Especially back then, ball playing centre half's were relatively rare.

He was like Webster, but even better. I remember that run forward and chip that crashed off the bar, amazing! you see plenty more of it now with all the telly on TV and modern players, but I dont think I had ever seen anything like it before at city.. and rarely since.

I was surprised he`s still only 28. In his prime as a CB and certainly worth someone giving him a go back over here if he has mastered his demons.

I just watched the highlights here

https://www.beinsports.com/us/turkish-super-league/video/caulker-in-spotlight-as-alanyaspor-and-trabzo/1578927  (you will need a VPN)

Ironically the own goal was caused by him trying to stop Benik score, (Benik seemed to be trying to claim it. :) ) . I must say I wouldn't have picked Caulker out of a line up he looks so different.

He's the type of player that, as you say if he has come over those obstacles, someone at this level would possibly take a chance on. Possibly on a short term contract initially, with the promise of a longer deal if everybody is happy (including Caulker himself).

Saying that though, he may not want to come back over and be pushed back into the spotlight. Being away has probably helped him immensely.

I certainly wouldn't be against seeing him here, even at half the ability he had when he was with us originally on loan!!

I didn`t want to actually say that in my post but with all our CB issues...............................................

Club a massive reason his career went downhill.

The club has come on leaps and bounds in that department of looking after young players.

Glad he is settled, he was some player during his time here.

Wouldn’t say club was a ‘massive’ reason his career went downhill. It went downhill due to his alcoholism. The club put him in a flat and left him to his own devices but I’d argue he would have found alcohol at one point or another.

His time at a club down the road was disastrous in terms of what happened to him personally.

Do you mean Yeovil or Swansea?

At Yeovil (my club), he won Player Of The Year at the age of 17/18, he was exceptional that season. Saw him a couple of years later and he had a move to Leeds United lined up but had a groin issue so the move stalled. Went to Swansea in the end.

Best defender Yeovil has ever had (and at least two of them are playing in the Premier League now).

From what I saw of him, he was probably one of the best defenders (centre halfs) City ever had (in my time - I recall such stalwarts as Gary Collier and Shaun Taylor).

I may be wrong, but I do seem to recall that SC gave an interview several months (years?) ago, in which he alluded to his time at City being the cause of his alcohol and gambling addictions (left to his own devices in a flat somewhere) - I have never heard nor read of any such problems at Yeovil or Swansea.

I'd guess he means, Cardiff?

I’d disagree with you, he was young and impressionable and if looked after properly would have been a different story.

Impossible to say if that is true but it’s probable that it isn’t true.  He talks about having an addictive personality amongst other issues.  Chances are he would have gone down the route he went down at one point or another.

To say that if City would have looked after him he would have never become an alcoholic and gambling addict is almost certainly wrong.

So if City didn’t leave him on his own and would have put measures in place to prevent it happening like they have done since.

Ridiculous comment, City are a lot to blame as are Spurs.

I’m not sure if we are talking at crossed purposes.  I’m saying that if city had looked after him better then he might not have gambled and drunk at that point.  But it’s likely he would have at some point in his career.

I assumed the ‘different story’ you mentioned was talking about his entire career which is wrong.

No need to call a comment ridiculous either.  It’s just a discussion and we all have opinions.  I’m giving mine having worked with alcoholic charities in the past.

Got a memory of reading one of his interviews and IIRC he was spotted out in a casino in the early hours, word got back to someone at the club who told him something along the lines of do what you want in your spare time, just don’t let it affect your performances on the pitch.
Not the best advice to be giving someone who wants to be a footballer, but things do seem to have improved since then
