The "Not Quite @BigTone Condensed, but I Tried" Version

After a traumatic fortnight over the international break, City’s threadbare squad picked up their seventh league win of the season and third in succession against Derby at the weekend.  On Wednesday they entertain a Watford team in 5th place who have lost just once in eight games.  The game is live on Sky, so a chance for both teams to show their promotion credentials.

Who’s the boss:

Under the Pozzo family, manager changes are far too regular an occurrence with 10 managers (inc caretakers) having taken the Hornets hot seat in the past five and a half seasons.  The current incumbent is Yugoslav born Vladimir Ivic. The former Partizan and PAOK midfielder took over in August and despite a good start following Watford’s relegation last season is already under pressure from some fans following a draw at QPR on Saturday.  Perhaps their time in the Premier League has caused some fans to forget how tough the Championship is?

Pic 2 – Watford manager Ivic with his icy stare!

As a manager Ivic started at PAOK where he won the Greek Cup before a stellar two seasons at Maccabi Tel Aviv where he claimed the Israeli Premier League and Cup double in his first season, retaining the title in his second season.  Maccabi lost just 6 matches in Ivic’s two seasons in charge.

Ivic in his short time at Vicarage Road has already stated his love for a one-nil win, so two successive three-two wins before the break will have had him fuming!

Recruitment:

With parachute payments, the impacts of reduced income from Covid won’t hit Watford as hard as others so they’ve managed to retain a number of key players but there has still been a number of players that have moved on during the summer window.

Players in:

§  Jeremy Ngakia – West Ham (Free)

§  Glenn Murray – Brighton (Loan)

§  Stipe Perica – Udinese (Undisc.)

§  Francisco Serrialta – Udinese (Undisc.)

§  William Troost-Ekong – Udinese (Undisc.)

§  James Garner – Manchester United (Loan)

Players out:

§  Abdoulaye Doucoure – Everton (£19m)

§  Pervis Estupinan – Villareal (£15m)

§  Luis Suarez – Granada (£6.3m)

§  Dimitri Foulquier – Granada (£1.8m)

§  Jose Cholevas – Olympiakos (Free)

§  Adalberto Penaranda – CSKA Sofia (Loan)

§  Jerome Sinclair – CSKA Sofia (Loan)

§  Gerard Deulefeu – Udinese (Loan)

§  Ignacio Pussetto – Udinese (Loan)

§  Roberto Pereyra – Udinese (Undisc.)

§  Craig Dawson – West Ham (Loan)

Eagle-eyed readers may spot a fair bit of transfer activity in and out with Udinese (Serie A).  That’s because the Pozzo family own Udinese too.  Really eagle-eyed readers will see Granada (La Liga) too.  Again, the Pozzo family own Granada too.

Formation / System

Ivic has set the Hornets up with a back three and wingbacks in each game this season.  Generally, it’s been a standard 352, but on Saturday he tweaked it a bit playing a 3421 with Joao Pedro and Ismaila Sarr playing behind the main striker.

With Watford leading one-nil at half-time and Ilic’s favourite result in sight, he swapped back to 352.

Pic 4 - Ivic swaps from 3421 to 352 versus QPR [Wyscout]

Pedro came off at halt-time for Domingos Quina and Troy Deeney replaced Andre Gray.  Ivic made no further subs, despite the EFL now allowing five out of nine to be used.  The game ended one-one.

Pic 5 – Ivic’s more familiar 352 before the international break versus Coventry [Wyscout]

We can see their more regular 352 above, but Ivic has enough quality in his squad to flex the system should he need to.

How do they play:

In the early games of this season where they twice won one-nil and drew nil-nil I couldn’t work out whether they were just scraping through games and getting a result, or whether they had another gear to go up.  A defeat against the early pacesetters Reading game week 4 still had me wondering.  However, I started to see an established style over the next few games as they bear Derby and Blackburn and drew with Bournemouth.  They are hard-working, physical team with good technical players in key positions.

Pic 6 - Possession versus Long Passing Map shows how direct or short a team pass the ball

In terms of their passing, we can see that Watford (like City) play a mix of styles over the course of the season.  They don’t over-pass, there is a purpose to their play.  Defensively they are hard to break down.  They are quite physically imposing with Troost-Ekong and Kabasele alongside Cathcart and / or Wilmot or a combination of the three.

Sarr and Sema:

Although most formation sheets will show Sarr as one of the two centre-forwards in the line-up, he really likes to drift onto the right wing rather than play down the middle.

Pic 7 - Sarr heatmap this season [Wyscout]

It was his cross versus Bournemouth that created the goal for Stipe Perica to slide in from 8 yards.  The picture below shows how Sarr drifts wide to receive angled passes.  Something for City to watch, plus as he makes his in-to-out runs Kalas will need to communicate his hand-offs well to Dasilva or Rowe.

Pic 8 - Sarr is not your traditional striker (versus Bournemouth)

On the other side we have left wingback Ken Sema.  But he plays more like a left winger.  He reminds me a bit of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas with his languid style, and like JET, he has a super left foot.

7941F33D-7F85-4A50-A4FA-87182E6EFC0F_4_5005_c.jpeg.9dbb1f65338f315ac58c037069fadc9e.jpeg

Pic 9 - Sema's season heatmap [Wyscout]

As you can see from the above heatmap, he spends a lot of time receiving and passing the ball in advanced positions.  It was his wicked cross on Saturday versus QPR that was hit home from a few yards out by Wilmot.  Having said that, he was generally quiet as Watford focussed a lot of their play down the right with Kiko Femenia getting forward supporting Sarr.

With Sarr drifting right and Sema getting forward on the left, Ivic’s 352 can morph into a front-three very easily.  This may restrict Jack Hunt’s ability to get forward, but it will also mean a huge space in behind Sema if we can win the ball back and spring the likes of Semenyo.

Set-pieces:

From earlier this season against Boro, Watford worked a corner where Joao Pedro started off at the back post and Kabasele blocks off his marker.

18C64CE3-06F3-4532-8033-4B9B3DFCD240_1_201_a.thumb.jpeg.4df6febb6b53adc819b62c7a1e193c7f.jpeg

Pic 10 - Pedro works himself free for a header from the penalty spot

This allowed him to get a free run to an outswinger and head towards goal with, with Watford players dragging their markers away from the intended area.  Something for City to watch.  They’ve generally defended the near post very well, Martin doing a fine job after City fans had got used to seeing Diedhiou perform so well.

The Players / line-up:

Not an easy one to predict with a new management team in place, so here’s Derby’s options in a 4231.

GK: Ben Foster (37) – vastly experienced keeper who shows little sign of age catching up with him.  Started at Stoke and even had a loan spell at City (without playing) before a great career took him to Manchester Utd, Birmingham and West Brom.  Signed for Watford two summers ago for £2.5m.

RWB: Kiko Femenia (29) – versatile right sided Spaniard who joined Watford from Alavez on a free transfer in the summer of 2017.  Can play left side too and has weighed in with a couple of assists already this season, and really seems to be getting more and more advanced as each game goes by.  He is battling it out with Jeremy Ngakiah (20) – a free transfer signing in the summer from West Ham.

CB: Craig Cathcart (31) – the former Manchester Utd youngster signed for free back in 2014 from Blackpool after their brief flirtation with the Premier League.  Had previously been on loan Watford over a decade ago and has over 300 career appearances and 50 caps for Northern Ireland.

CB: William Troost-Ekong (27) – uncompromising centre-back from Haarlem (Netherlands) but of Nigerian descent who started at Spurs.  Had loans at Dordrecht and Groningen before signing for Belgium club Gent in 2015.  He then went to Bursaspor in Turkey and then to Udinese before signing for Watford in September.  Has 39 caps for Nigeria.

CB: Christian Kabasele (29) – another former Genk player arriving at Watford in 2016 for £6.2m having had several loans in Belgium.  Along with Ben Wilmot (21) – Watford will select 3 of the 4 centre-backs.  Wilmot has had loans at Udinese and Watford and can be a bit rash in the tackle.

LWB: Ken Sema (27) – Norrkoping born Swedish international who started out at his hometown club.  Moved to Ostersund under Graham Potter before signing for Watford for £2m in 2018.  Had a loan at Udinese before becoming a regular this season in the wingback role where he has 5 assists from 12 games.

CM: Tom Cleverley (31) – experienced ex-England international and GB Olympian who started at Manchester United.  Had loans at Wigan, Aston Villa and Watford (in 2009/10) before moving to Everton on a free.  Joined Watford for £8.5m in the summer of 2017.  Neat and tidy player on the ball.

CM: Etienne Capoue (32) – Another experienced player with plenty of Premier League appearances with Tottenham.  Arrived in England from Toulouse for £10m in 2013 and cost Watford £8m in 2015.  Also gained 7 caps for France.

CM: James Garner (19) – on loan from Manchester United, the youngster has played a part in most games this season.  Along with Cleverley and Capoue, he is battling it out with Nathaniel Chalobah (25) – the ex-Chelsea player provides versatility and can play centre-back or right-back also.  Domingos Quina (21) -provides creativity with his dribbling if Ivic wants to bring that attribute into the team.  Formerly with Benfica and Chelsea’s youth set-ups he signed from West Ham in 2018 for £1m.

CF: Joao Pedro (19) – exciting striker who is top scorer with this season.  Got a touch of class and can drop into the pockets and create for others.  Signed from Fluminese (Brazil) in January for £3.5m.

CF: Ismaila Sarr (22) – Senegalese international along with our own Diedhiou.  He signed for Watford for a staggering £27m from Stade Rennais in 2019, having cost them £15m from Metz 2 seasons before.  Likes to drift onto the right side and a real threat.  My DANGERMAN!

Pic 11 – Sarr chases after Senegal teammate Mane in last season’s Premier League clash.

Beyond Pedro and Sarr, Ivic can call upon Andre Gray (29) – the former City target, Troy Deeney (32) – who despite only an hour of football this season has three goals, Stipe Perica (25) – the Croatian target man who signed from Udinese in September whilst not forgetting Glenn Murray (37) – the hugely experienced striker on loan from Brighton.

Prediction:

I’m glad that the game is on Wednesday (rather than Tuesday) and that City will be able to benefit from the extra day to recover their thin squad and get themselves ready for this top-5 clash.  It will be a tough game but I see City gaining another valuable point.

Its fair to say that Watford have a very "experienced" squad, certainly in terms of age.

One win and just 3 goals away from home is a bit shite tbf.

If our lads have caught up after the last two weeks, and if we are quick out of the traps, I see no reason why we can't pick up three points tomorrow.

I'll go for a 2-0 win and consolidate 3rd place.

Holden has said in his presser that we have one injury from Saturday. Have a feeling it’s Pato as he went on to say Pato has been carrying a knock for a few weeks, so it’s probably catching up with him!

Bakinson still isolating but feeling well which is the most important thing. We might see Massengo tomorrow night...

Yep, seems that Paterson is the likely ongoing injury from the Derby game.

Massengo back in the squad probably.

It’s the short 3 minute interview on City’s Twitter feed. Holden talks about it there a little.

Doesn’t sound too serious though!

Just seen that, not convinced it’s something that will keep him out tomorrow from what Dean said.  Smokescreen perhaps for another player not being available?  I even wonder if Bakinson managed to get a positive test whether he could be available?

There's some real quality in that side and bench, knew Sarr was good but didn't realise they'd paid almost £30m for him.

I'd be happy with a draw tonight.

Key for us is getting stuck in, roughing up their diva's a bit and making them uncomfortable physically - Wycombe had some success doing that.

I know....£42m in fees in total.  They are quite a robust team.  I wouldn’t naturally call any of their players Divas per se, apart from their CB Wilmot who’s more of a moaner than a diva!  Pedro is young and Brazilian so might be temperamental.  Not sure we will be bullying Gray or Deeney should they play ???

According to today's Racing Post............The Lucky Robins (Their Term) luck is about to run out?  We have scored 3 goals from 4 shots in 3 games.........and that cannot be sustained, especially against quality opposition like Watford.  So they make it a nailed on away win?  They do have a point, as we are not exactly holding onto possession,  and our shot count is very very low.  Personally i think it will be a draw, or a narrow defeat..............to close to call IMHO.
