Reading – Sat 28th November 12:30 – What Can We Expect?

First half in a nutshell

Think that half captures very much what has become our style - defensively well drilled, keeping the ball, without doing much creatively with it and providing very little in the  attacking third.

Two teams sizing each other up, rather like in the early rounds of a well matched boxing bout.

Reading have had the better scoring chances but overall two evenly matched teams. Fancy the introduction of Wells and / or Martin could unlock this, as the game begins to open up in the final half an hour.

Vyner has had an excellent half.

Have you got something personal against referees!
The player was down injured on the 6 yard line, would you have felt the same if it was one of ours in our box.

Because we were in a good attacking position the player was not in danger as not a head injury, play should not be stopped.

But perhaps if by your take on it, every time a team is under pressure perhaps a player can chuck himself on the floor in the box and have the game stopped so they can reorganise

Anyone want a stat?

Fammy: aerial duels won: zero.

Perhaps we should stop aiming for his head then? Morrison and Moore are units. Need to play around them.

Bentley made 2 good saves, BAU for him at the minute.

Vyner looks classy, him and Rowe having solid games. TM still concerns me a bit, so wish we had Mawson.

Nagy outstanding. Always wants the ball, moves it quickly, plays some clever passes forward and also brave passes. That one into Fam was quality.

Pato and COD need to do a bit more going forward. Good cross from COD for fam, Pato seems frustrated at lack of movement when bets the ball.

Semenyo showing signs of spark but a bit in and out of the game too much atm. Fam not getting the best supply, and not doing enough when he’s had it.

Id like to see us go 4-3-3, this is a team in terrible form, we’ve got to take the game to them. Would like to see Wells or probably Martin on soon, not sure who makes way at the back. Moore is a CB but Rowes having a better game

1st half summary:

Bit lacklustre, think we could be a tad more adventurous but staying solid.  Reading will leave a few gaps as game wears on.

Rowe been really good first half.  Good in the aerial challenge and tackle and good distribution.

Nagy started to open his body up in the second part of the half, driving 5-10 yards into the space.  O'Dowda got into a couple of good positions, good ball (almost) to Famara.

Everyone else steady, those the three just breaking the 6/10....apart from Bentley.

Flat in the first half and better in the 2nd is becoming a pattern for us. Let's see what 2mf half brings; could have a totally different feel to it as evidenced by previous games.

Pato isn't playing great IMO, but not sure who I'd sub him for. (Which probably means he'll pop up in the 80th min and score a goal)

Best players in that half Rowe and O'Dowda.

Hunt very careless on the ball. Pato looking slow and lightweight.

Moore defended well at times but looks less confident on the ball than what we saw earlier in the season.

Fam been ineffective so far. Him and Semenyo doesn't look great but maybe that can change if we play a bit more positively 2nd half like we did midweek.

Hunt possibly starting a bit too high and losing his angles both into the forwards and inside.  Little things but it means he's closing his own passing options / lanes.

Very much a continuation from mid week. Not too bad at the back but very laboured going forward.

As I sad mid-week, we lack that explosive burst upfront that scares defences and creates chances and space.

Disagree I think we do have that explosive counter attack, but we only tend to see it once or twice a game tbh. Has resulted in some wins though.

Hopefully we step it up second half like we did vs Watford.

Agreed. I think this is particularly our style in the first half of games. Honestly think it might be part of our tactical plans - we stay very tight and disciplined for the first 45 and are more adventurous second half when opposition energy levels are lower.

No doubting Reading had the better of the half, but really one great bit of skill from their forward and long shots are where their chances have come from - nothing clear cut - defensively we have been very good.
