The referee thought it was a potentially serious injury, and the player was on the floor in the penalty area. What if it was a broken leg, should the game just continue for 2,3,4 minutes until the ball goes out of play? 
The referee has a duty of care for every player.

Players are quick to let the ref know when a serious injury, or ref could have got closer to the player. by your standard players will be chucking themselves on the floor contsntly to get the game stopped.
