Mr X
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55152637 Good to see the top clubs won’t be able to sign foreign players under 18 which should help in giving British kids more of a chance in the game. This will definitely make foreign signings for non-prem teams such as us harder though as I don’t think many of our recent foreign purchases would meet the new restrictions. Busterrimes
We wouldn’t have been able to sign Massengo as he was still 17 wasn’t he? It will stop the Premier League hoovering up all the top European talent but unfortunately means they will start looking at casting a wider net over young British players so we could lose out. The Premier League clubs will find a way around those rules. For instance, they will do deals with clubs that will allow them to sign once they reach the correct age, or they will ‘ move’ said player to a ‘friendly’ club on the continent, then bring them over once they reach the correct age. The biggest PL clubs will try to acquire even more British youngsters through their level 1 academies. The clever clubs amongst the rest will try to identify and take those that are their cast offs in the hope of acquiring a potential star player that has been overlooked. It’s basically what Crewe have been doing for years in the North West, but then they have still been selling them on. At a higher level than they have been operating, a club such as City might hope to hold onto those players and build a team around at least a few of the most talented youngsters. A number of PL clubs (Man City, Leicester) already have “feeder” clubs overseas, while others at our level have owners who have clubs elsewhere in Europe (Forest, Brentford, Watford). They can wait or will try to find loopholes to get round these restrictions.
