The old St.Andrews ground walk to New Street station was one of the roughest walks in England back to and from the station in those days (Cold Blow Lane & Ayresome Park came close also). Waste land, side streets and Zulus all tooled up that day. Big mob of City there early doors, but you did not want to lose all your mates walking to and from the ground on your own - trust me. Dangerous place to be an away fan...

Got asked the time twice the day we won 4-0 up there...little scrotes.

Just did me best Jasper Carrot voice and kept walking..

Can anyone remember the year? early 70's?

The police just marched the Blues fans into the east end very early.

They stood right behind the goal, with fights kicking off all around the edges, but we never got our 'rightful' places back

i think they won 2-0, can't remember if Trevor Francis was playing, when he was 16/17 years old and ridiculously talented

it was not a great day for us reds.

here's hoping for better times today

69-70 ish

I can remember watching that as a kid stood in the enclosure. They ended up on the pitch and running up to the open end.

It kicked off twice that day, your right Millwall were in early that day and when the main City mob arrived they legged it onto the pitch.

Another load of Millwall fans came into the East End when it was pretty rammed and it proper kicked off.

I remember it well because i was a 15yo lad at the time and got knocked to the floor by a gert Millwall Skin.!!!!

I got told oxford were on the east end and held their own in those days.

I remember City were filling the Oxford end up there till about 5 mts. before k.o. when the Oxford mob stormed in from the back.

We were scattered to all parts of the ground sharpish!

Got firmly put in our place that day!

First time we played them we took a "Swindon load" in their end (London rd) thought they would be a piss take like the Town End, but they had other ideas. City stayed there all match, but not for the want of Oxford trying , a stiffish crew they hadthen, which surprised everyone !

I remember that oxford game and their half time retreat. Also recall an altercation with their coach outside popeye's cafe on the Cumberland basin; not sure if that was pre or post match however.

got told by a proper old school chap this was 1968 and they had yellow builders helmets on alot of them....

I know football was in the decline at the time, but I am amazed anyone normal went to games back then.

It was a 2 for 1 deal back then. You had a match on and off-pitch.

Invariably, we were far better off-the-pitch than we were on it. At least that gave a number of followers some warped sense of pride in being ‘Bristol City’ back then.

You then had your dream days like Birmingham away 4-0 win and a sizeable contingent of City off the pitch who gave out more pleasantries than they received.

Different days....although we remain, at best, pretty average on the pitch.

Great days them.

I remember the Zulus being all tooled up looking for bovver with anyone who would 'ave it. Chanting and swearing, some old lady walking past told a young skin off. He wasn't having that and she was dispatched into the Avon.

Saw a big lad all tooled up. Wore a necklace of eyeballs ripped from the skulls of top lads from rival firms.

It all went off on the Eastend as lads from both firms laid into each other. Punches and kicks raining down in all directions, no quarter given, none asked. Big Mick from Knowle lost his head and dived straight in to the melee,  disappeared under the blows of at least 20 Brummies, but then burst out of it grinning like a maniac, brandishing the severed right arm of some unfortunate as a war trophy.

It carried on for hours inside and outside the ground. The old bill tried their best to keep control, but beat a hasty retreat when the Hartcliife u10s mob torched a police van and bbq'd 2 police horses.

The brummies were not averse to dirty tricks that day. Ditching their colours, a big group snuck into a city pub long since closed down. They tried to identify lone City boys using the old "got the time mate" trap. But they messed with the wrong knuckle head when they tried that trick with Billy The Screwdriver from Sea Mills... Billy couldn't read his own name let alone a watch, so told em to do one and set about them with anything to hand. As he unleashed hell on the horrified Midlanders,  I remember him taking the time to school a 6 year old CSF apprentice, explaining how it was best to throw the pint pots but keep the bottles for the close in work.

Think City ran them pretty good that day. Kept the hospitals and morgues busy, and the Brummies crawled off to Weston to lick their wounds and buy ice creams.

Football just isn't the same any more. Great days.

I had a similar experience at Cardiff, a young teenager back in the early 1970s.

Just a friend and I, walking quickly/jogging back to the station from Ninian Park, I was asked the time and, in my best Welsh accent, blurted out 'One Nil' - with an emphasis on the nillll....

A combined look of bewilderment, but we carried on walking/jogging (albeit perhaps a little bit more quickly!) and just avoided being thrown in to the Taff.

Oh, and I remember recuperating most of my train fare from the coins thrown at us when we left the station on the way to the match ?

Oxford never arrived in the London Rd much before 2.45, they'd come in from the two entrances at the back and pincer the away fans behind the goal. Most of them used to work at the Morris works in Cowley, knock off at 12.30 and wander up to Headington via the pubs. They really gave it to Villa in the early 70's and could hold their own with most, back in the day. People forget that up to the mid 80's most of Oxford was blue collar, a very industrial city indeed.

Not now though, £600,000 for a house off the Cowley rd, outrageous!!!!

Villa did.  1969?  Only time I’ve seen anyone with a knife on the terraces (and he wasn’t peeling a apple)...

True 1969, preceded by Brum the previous month. People have said about Portsmouth but I only recall a game about 72, where they came in early and I remember being charged from the middle as they expected us to run, we stood our ground and eventually I believe they made a quick exit.

Sunderland also had a pop and were in early, they'd been relegated from the 1st Div. The lads came in with the chant of "Bristol" as they marched around the gangway and were joined by others who'd been biding their time. Never seen a mob move as quickly as them wearsiders.

That's correct , yellow hardhats - no idea why.....never seen any other mobs wearing those!

A few teams did that, Huddersfield and Hull. I remember quite a few City lads wore them on the Tote one evening.

Talking of Birmingham, taking ends and phoney accents, I remember an occasion about 20 years back when we played Brum at St Andrews. The City end was sold out, but as I was living in Staffordshire I decided to go anyway and get a ticket in the Birmingham end. I took my seat 20 mins before kick off and within 10 mins was surrounded by at least 50 of the meanest, nastiest looking thugs you've ever seen in your lives. Constantly gesturing to the City support and talking about what they were going to do to them after the game. City took the lead early on and there was not even a flicker from me. The mob surrounding me were incandescent with rage. I've never before or since been pleased that City went onto lose, with me celebrating the Brum goals like my life depended on it (it probably did). Fortunately for me, I was never asked the time, although I was constantly rehearsing Midlands accents in my head ready for that event. I was too nervous to leave the stand early in case that drew any attention to myself, so I had the most nerve racking, unpleasant 2 hours in a football ground ever (and I include the defeat to the Gas at Trumpton in 1990). I have been in 'home' ends since when City are playing away, but every time I ensured I wasn't in ends where the rival teams mob may be.

I can assure you not praying as hard as we were for a Chelsea goal when we were up at Stamford Bridge!

Was on their open end, opposite The Shed with loads of Chelsea around us. We went 1-0 up. Much to our massive relief they scored and it ended 1-1. Pretty sure we wouldn’t have survived our walk back to Victoria Coach Station along the Embankment if we’d won that particular match. These were he days when you were unescorted outside the grounds and were easy prey.

Would have been mid-70’s. Were the rumours that some City had gone into The Shed correct? Could have been the reason, if so, why the natives seemed so agitated.

Not a bad mob the Zulus.

In more recent times, it went off outside the pub they have covered in Blues posters (St George or something like that?) back in 2016 before the game. Afterwards, by the roundabout outside the away end was an interesting one that the police struggled to get hold of too.

City were on the back foot until two minibuses of lads turned up and flew out, changed the momentum somewhat.
