Mortimer and Whitehouse - Gone Fishing

On Sunday night ,brilliant programme., it is clearly unscripted and you get to see they have fears, worries ailments, heart aches and laughter just like everyone else in life ,like listening in to best mates talking in a pub

I sit down and watch it and forget about everything that is insignificant  with a smile on my face waiting for Bob or Paul, to gently wind each other up chatting about what matters to a man of my age, health, family, death, and regret all with a gentle poignant warmness that makes you feel good.

Fishing definitely is secondary and for men of a certain age well worth a watch

As a coarse angler I love this programme. Even Mrs RR who has no interest in accompanying me to the bank loves it.

As for fishing being secondary that is very true. One of the main reasons I go is for the peace and observing wildlife - catching fish can be a bonus.  On the club lake I see kingfishers, buzzards, herons, deer and all a stones through from Gatwick.

I hate fishing but this is the best programme on tv

It's a free world, but how can you hate fishing? It's a wonderful pastime , not just about catching but just being there is enough. I fish rivers by myself, occasionally with my son, we fish mostly for Barbel, a strong fighting fish that is such an adrenaline rush when you get that bite, your rod almost bends double, and the fight is always immense.

They always get put back btw.

As a comparison imagine City scoring a last minute winning goal against Man U for excitement,

OK it won't ever happen...but imagine the buzz?

I’ve been with friends whilst they fish. I just drank cans!  Being there and chatting was great. Tried fishing itself and found it somewhat lacking! Didn’t care I caught one or not. Each to their own though!

I like all fishing myself with the exception of stocked out fisheries as in my tiny mind you may as well fish in an aquarium. At least in a river you are battling the fish and nature itself. Same when I sea fish. I prefer fishing from the shore rather than a boat with fish finders.

Am currently renovating one of my holiday Gites with the idea of offering fishing holidays in the Charente. Some stonking Catfish to be caught as well as most other species. Could easily take people to a minimum of 14 good venues within an hours drive. One of the best is at the bottom of the garden. Nice Chub in there. Am looking to buy a minibus so I can drop off and collect to and from the venue. Also means if the client wants to take a few beers with him or her then they can. Will also organise all permits etc required.

When I fish I really don't care if I catch or not. It's just a great way to relax and generally chill out and forget the world exists.

Living my dream Tone, toyed with moving to France, but events overtook that. But live in the Cotswolds where the Severn and Warks Avon meet, plenty of opportunity.   But my home River is thde Brisol Avon of course, born in St Anne's , no choice.

You should do fine with fishing guiding, those big Cats are a real crowd puller, please let me know how it progresses I have plenty of potential clients for you.

Never caught a Barbel. Certainly on the bucket list but don't see too many over here. I understand to catch one is amazing as it is an amazing fighting fish. One day I hope.

Like you I return all fish unless edible and even then most go back. Went fly fishing in Polmont near Forfar once and you weren't allowed to return the trout as it apparently distresses them. Not sure how that works as I'm sure they don't really like getting whacked on the head either !!

Have fished many places in the world from Barramundi in Australia's Northern Territory (whilst trying to avoid them Crocodilliac thingys) to Bass & Blue Fin in USA at a competition in Georgia i was invited to. Just love the variety of what can be caught. Fished for trout in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco when I worked there and tried for Marlin off the coast of Langkawi when we stopped over enroute to Oz a few years back. Just love it. Fished the barrier reef many times and the beach fishing on Fraser Island, Queensland when the Tailor are running is just fab. Another memory was fishing for Tuna in the red sea when I worked in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

In all that one of the best fishing beaches in the world is good old Chesil.

No matter where you fish and what for it is just so relaxing. Am retired now so hopefully will do more especially with the planned Gite idea.

The gite & guiding idea sounds great @BigTone. Hope it goes well.

I don't get enough time to go fishing as much as I would like what with work and family as it is a bit of a time eating activity. However I am starting to think of retirement in a few years so hopefully that should improve.

I have though caught a barbel from my local river Mole - it was though about four inches long so can't claim to have the experience @Blackbird1 mentions :shifty:

Yes, but there is something about "I caught a Barbel" that resonates. Fair play to you Sir. I can still only dream.

I am struggling with retirement and the boredom so hope I can combine something I love into a business idea. The Gites still make money but this idea gives some added value and me some enthusiasm which is currently missing.

Any barbel is a bar of gold..but I have been lucky having them bullion side, over 15 lbs a few times, extraordinary fish. Been fishing since I was a kid, now retired, but the Barbel is my main target these days. But predation by Otter has wiped out many rivers of them, still a few in the Trent Wye Severn etc, but they are generally bigger as an average, due to the females being solitary, due to lack of males. Good luck with your quest if you need some pointers message me, have some gòod rivers local.

Good on you.

I have concerns about retirement and need to give it some thought. I was thinking of "downshifting" to a less stressful  part time local job but I suspect the economic downturn will have put paid to that idea. Might just have to fill the time with travel and fishing !!

Gite idea sounds like a winner, as has been said, Catfish are a big pull, you’d have no trouble in getting parties over for that.

Regarding the trout, catch and release for trout has only recently become more common, they are one of the fish most susceptible to dying after being caught, if not handled correctly, barbless hooks used etc.  More knowledge and education for anglers on how to handle trout has enabled the rise in catch and release fisheries.  Some of the old school also thought it made them harder to catch if they’d been caught once- along with the fact you pay for the trout in the ticket price of any water they are stocked in.
