I went there for all my Airfix needs.  Yes, it was a treasure trove.

there was a co op/ greenshield stamp place up there somewhere, went in with my mum on the bus from nailsea to get a new dustbin using the greenshield stamps collected from shopping and petrol. got back to the bus station,{lovely old smelling place}  dustbin full of shopping, waiting for bus when we had to evacuate as a bomb warning went off and the ones in park st and bath did explode. we had to stand on the big roundabout outside, pandemonium, waiting for my aunt in her mk1 escort to collect us

Yeah. Wasn't the Green Shield Stamp shop on the Bierkeller side of the road - or have I I mis-remembered that.

Was it Beatties or something like that? Brentford Nylons was another that terrified me, being dragged in there by my Mother who loved the place, as did all Mums ?

You had Beaties which was down towards the end of the horsefair if my memory serves me correctly.  Still got Antics on Fairfax Street.

Tom's correct I think. Beatties if I remember correctly was the last shop on the terrace, and had a road leading up the side of it into one of the entrance into Quakers Friars (although may be wrong on that bit).

I always remember that the scalextric and train stuff was upstairs, and the general toy stuff was on the ground floor as you went in. Memories of going in there after Christmas most years and looking through the action figure sections - mainly the WWF Hasbro, Turtles, He-Man and Thundercats figures!

Also remember Rival Records which wasn't too far from there (possibly next door or a few shops down).

Was Littlewoods where CEX are now? It was definitely on the same side, but may well have been further up.

Yaeh, when Quaker's Friars was basically the Registry Office, a car park & the public toilets!

I feel the need to dig more photos out of that stream. Plenty of good memories.  That registry office..  I recall always a good place to quickly park up for 10-20 mins to get away with having to pay for the Galleries car park

Had another thought about Beatties (during a 4am wakeup call from the 5 week old ) is the building that was Beatties now a betting shop, or have I completely lost my bearings now?

Beatties Bag

17-19 Penn Street.  Looking on map not sure where that lands.. Kuoni is 21 Penn Street on street view

Perhaps it wasn't quite where I remember it being then. Blaming it on too many heavy nights  :laughcont:

Must be Beatties because that's just how I recall it was laid out.

So Tom..........just how many plastic carrier bags do you have in your collection ;)

I started to look through the photostream but had to give up because, as you said, I was losing too much time - but so many memories. Thanks Tom - will need to dive back in again on the weekend.

Cheers Tom. Couple of great pics of the flyover I’ve not seen before in there.

Looks a bit grim. I used to work over the road at HMSO (now vehicle testing centre I think) up past the Ship & Castle.

I went to school with Neil from Junior to Senior. Ian (known as Stodge) was a couple of years older.

Blimey. My great-uncle Joe leaning on his garden wall in one of those.

Only last week, I digitalised a tape of him saying "up da City!" in his old-school, ultra Bristolian accent.

Sorry to bump this @Red-Robbo

Was it this pic? Only Know you place Bristol tweeted about it yesterday

Yep. Uncle Joe. Married to Auntie Ivy. I only vaguely remember him from parties around my nan's house in Frobisher Road.

Nice to still have his voice on a tape though. ?
