Been a lot of complaints on social media as it was advertised as being on the iPlayer at 9:30, only to find they weren't showing it live and to wait for BBC1 at 10:30. Must be a contractual thing with McCartney, think the same thing happened with the Stones and U2 a few years ago.

I watched about 5 minutes on TV last night and that was enough. I watched her. Not a great fan but I guess I took the opportunity as I wouldn't go and see her otherwise. She was better than I thought she would be. She didn't sing the James Bond theme though which surprised me.

Port Said Red
I thought Macca's set was excellent. I don't get this "should have retired gracefully" stuff, age is just a number in music. I remember an interview with Elvis Costello when he turned 50 and he was asked how much longer he could go on. He said "It's only rock and roll that has an obsession with age, if I was a jazz musician they would be saying, that kid Costello shows promise, he might really do something when he's older" The fact that both he and McCartney are still bringing out new material, when other performers of their age and younger are just trotting out their hits at Butlins, should be celebrated not chastised. Having said that, the Glastonbury audience is a different animal so I do think the set should have reflected the fact the majority will not be following his new output. 1

RedRock
Well Macca surprised me. Had big reservations about him headlining. Far better voice and energy than anticipated, then delivered an absolutely shite set. Headlining is about entertaining people, not trying to promote your new music or unheard of back catalogue. Would have thought by now he would have grasped that - it’s not if he needs the money! When Lennon graphics came up, was sure ‘Give Peace a Chance’ was coming on…nope. Even the Glasto audience missed a ‘there’s only one Taylor Hawkins’ moment when Big Dave came on. Not a Glasto festival to remember for me. 3/10 at best. Looking at it another way, Macca played 38 songs, Billie Eilish played 20. Macca played at least 20 stone-cold classics in his set, so look at the other 18 as a bonus

My wife always said “I won’t go away anywhere I can’t plug a hairdryer in.” so he’s now open to either staying at my cousins or hotel and shuttle box in. This is what I do. I did camp there once and had a horrible time, falling over guy-ropes in the dark and getting covered in mud. Now I go home to recuperate between bouts of lurching around the site. I'm popping up at midday today and will nip out before the outward queues start.

So moved on quick. I think I’m getting old and need some traditional festival anthem specialists to take the stage. It’s been a bit like the feeling I got of the City vs Cardiff 0-0 match of the Pulis era. Great expectation, f-all delivery.

McCartney's voice isn't anywhere close to what it was, but he's 80 years old! Standing up, singing and playing bass/guitar for close to 3 hours is incredible. And to do it so well is astounding. I've never seen him live and probably can't afford to, but if he tours the UK again I'm going to do my best to get a ticket.

Just proves the point to me. You’re Headlining at Glasto on a Saturday night, top spot of the entire festival, should be the crescendo. We want sing-along festival anthems, how many of those songs had full-on audience participation that brought the house down? Possibly 15-20% or so. Should be more like 40-60% for me in that spot. Maybe I’m getting old and want to release energy and have a good time when listening to the top slot at a festival. Maybe the era of festival anthem bands have past - certainly seems so from the headliners this year - more’s the pity in my view.

Resurrect John and George and dragged Ringo out of retirement maybe. Played Sgt Pepper from start to finish? I watched it to the end, I am not even his greatest fan, but I was still wide awake and enthused at ten past one in the morning. You weren't, ah well.

I imagine the headliners on Friday and Sunday will put a lot of people off this year, as only a minority of the audience will have heard of more than a couple of songs. But the 'kids' will probably like them more than someone like Macca.
