Ah ok, so if we arbitrarily start using average position rather looking at the recent trend then it's not downhill, got it!

Also generally I'm not sure what you call the other side of a peak, but a common word is again, downhill.

Flippancy aside I agree he didn't start the fire, but I don't think he's helping arrest it either. I think there's a bigger picture here.

Ok, so you mentioned we were 3rd at some point. That was under LJ.

3rd LJ.

12th when LJ left. Downhill, fast. Agreed.

12th when DH starts.

9th currently.

3, 12, 9. All "downhill"?

As we are into giving them a few reject players recently, they only had to ask and they could have had our present manager as well,...... could of chucked in Ashton as a bonus..... as he pulls the strings.

Cardiff don't **** about. They are everything we want to be. Numerous playoff finishes between 2010 and now, two promotions. As soon as they take a downturn in form they sack a Manager to improve. Whilst we dither about with a nobody in charge and more likely to be relegated to League 1 than be anywhere near promoted from this League.

We have no ruthless streak like Cardiff and i'm envious we can't be the same.

I broadly agree, I'm being a bit facetious really.

As I mentioned though I'm more looking at long term trends otherwise we get into "ok we won a game so now we're on an upward trend! Wait we lost two, now we're on a downward one" again when it comes to 3 points between 9th and 14th.

The long term trend I see was lower table, a season of challenging to some degree, and now a couple mid table. I haven't seen anything this season to make me think that the current trend will change in a positive way - and not just in a points on the board sense.

Couple of things.

Read that it was a shortish term contract, also read that they contacted Cook with a 6 month contract offer.

Secondly, what will he have to work with next season if still there?

Parachute Payments will be zero. That is a cliff edge drop of £30-35m.

With respect to Ipswich, Waghorn, McGoldrick, Garner. Celina and at the back a certain Webster too...would McCarthy have kept them steady with them all gone in 2018/19?

Left a huge hole in the side...check how many of the goals walked out the door in summer 2018 there!

Erm, have you noticed that the first four I mentioned are all injured?

Err, did you notice I said we had no pace! None of the players you mentioned are what you would class as really fast, nothing that actually scares defenders. David Smith had pace, Scott Murray had pace. We are severely lacking it..........imo!

Out of likes  bill totaly  agree total lack of pace add to that no natural leader motivator and no dead ball specialist

One of my favourite players , albeit his stay too short

Seeing him turn the after burners on was one of the great sights over the decades - awesome, especially for a well built lad - thighs like medicine balls

He used to do a funny sort of skip step and then ..........overdrive......see ya later

Fantastic

Fantastic

I remember Ian Alexander getting turned over at the gate and sending Smith flying in the air with one of the crudest tackles I’d seen.

And they've ended up appointing a really mediocre human.*

What are the alternative options available to us when choosing a manager besides ‘humans’?

Are we ready to accept an AI manager or will they always be human?

His sole intention was to kick Smith , literally off the pitch

Some of the most disgraceful challenges I’ve ever seen - because Alexander couldn’t play and resorted to trying to cripple Smith every time they met

Remember Smith , vaulting a knee high challenge and leaving him on his Scottish arse as he accelerated away plenty of times

Id have Dave Smith of 1990 right now - yes please

I'm still clinging to the "injuries" get out, and that a couple more returning to fitness along with Mawson will at least see us performing a little better.

I'm trying not to look at or think about the long term trend, there's enough to be gloomy about at the moment. Our history does suggest decline from here, though.

I think Deano will be about as good as the players he has available to him, like most coaches/managers. If he’s going to do anything exciting here, likelihood is it'll be in his second full season. Exciting very unlikely to equal promotion, though. He's not the Messiah, though, no.

Actually that's not a crazy suggestion. I wonder if there is any one trying to develop something like an AI manager? You'd have to feed it all the data, and it might struggle to give a motivational speech, but in terms of team selection, training programmes, analysis of potential signings...it's probably possible.

I bet China are ahead of everyone and are developing stuff like this now.

True, but how many players really do stand out as being really fast these days...?

Of course there are a few and for the sides that have them, it's a real weapon, but I honestly can't think of that many times where you sit watching a game, thinking "he's just too fast to cope with"

Traore a few years back.

Traore is seriously quick. Showed Kyle Walker what fast really is. The only question was the end product but even that appeared to have improved last season.

The other really quick player currently is Jamie Vardy. His pace is incredible for a guy nearly in his mid 30s and still scares defenders.

Apologies if already covered but 2 interesting snippets. As initially reported, his deal is not long- until the end of the season at this stage. He also talks about possibility of playoffs.

Element of shit or bust here (FFP and expenditure, not solvency wise)? Remember next season, their Parachute Payments fall from £30-35m to ZERO.

That has potential to be a tough gig- was reported somewhere that Cook turned down a 6 month deal so he might be available after all.

They had the lowest wage bill in the Prem by some distance, 42M and made a 2M profit (following a big 34M loss previous year) so big interest in their accounts for 19/20. They had included the still disputed Sala fee in those accounts of 19/20, which for them is probably key for FFP. If they have to pay the fee , no idea if an insurance claim then comes into play. With no big transfer fee last summer and a balanced in and out the previous year, it would be a surprise if they have not made another profit last season. It doesn't look a mess , more like a Norwich managed situation, though transfer fees are out the window as for almost all Championship clubs
