Rope a Dopes

That, despite the result, was more worrying than the Norwich game.

We scored 2 in quick succession but created close to nothing else. We invited pressure the whole game and conceded due to that, only escaping due to bar, post and Bentley.

Our only tactic - in every game and irrespective of opposition, seems to be to hang in the game and hope we nick a goal. It’s not just risky, it’s boring.

This wasn’t Norwich. This was Huddersfield. And this was how we have decided to play. Because it’s how we play every single bloody week when it’s not Millwall reserves. Is this really our master tactical plan - rope a dope and hope Bents remains inspired?

Said it before, but what does the team do all week?
Because it looks like their brains go all mushy when playing a match.
Does switching from Covid protocols during training to match protocols cause them problems?
Do they struggle not having a crowd to perform for?
It's just baffling.

It's frustrating being a City supporter.

Agree with that, Silv, and the worrying thing IMO was this type of dire display isn't a one-off. It was the same at Cardiff for 89 minutes, at Huddersfield for 70 minutes, at Norwich for 90 minutes -- I could go on, you probably get the point.

I read a really interesting article on luck in football last week, that said it doesn't even out over a season, more like over several years. While the results cannot be disputed right now, the performances need to drastically improve or the chickens will come home to roost. Kalas seemed to recognise that.

Didn’t see the game, but wow if that happened! In what context did it happen, a quick break that was on? These are the little things that really worry me about this squad, it really is schoolboy errors. COYR

No, no quick break at all.  Standard goal-kick.  Kalas and Mawson come short into our box and split.  But are pressed well, so Bentley can’t pass to them.  There are no passes on to full-backs or retreating central midfield as Huddersfield have gone one on one.

So rather than Bentley just saying “sod the short option, let’s reset” and then give Kalas and Mawson a few seconds to jog 40 yards towards the h/w line, pushing the midfield on with them, Bentley just takes it then, meaning 60 yard gap from front to back.

Dont get me wrong, Huddersfield are gambling that we don’t win the ball, but the long ball forward is low risk for them, high risk of losing possession for us.  Huddersfield do win the ball and they have men advanced, and one on ones all over the pitch to exploit.

We should’ve gone back to basics, delay the goal-kick, get everyone within 20 yards (10 yards either side of the h/w line and gamble on picking up pieces, albeit in a much sounder and compact shape.

The second half there seemed a deliberate ploy to not attack but just keep possession, which seemed a dangerous tactic seeing that Huddersfield were the more likely to score. We’re not going to if we’re trying to avoid doing so. Trying to keep possession is all very well if you are able to, if not, you’re effed
