Can someone point out some valid reasons that the manager who currently has his underdog team sat clear at the top of League one, would be such a dreadful option? - rather than just post stupid gifts...!

Would he excite me...? No

Is he a logical option to consider..? Has to be, doesn't he..?

Appleton’s record in the Championship is poor, even by the standards of LJ and DH. It was a few years ago (2011-2013) but it wouldn’t fill anyone with any confidence.

Managed Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn over 78 games; won 19 (less than 25%); drawn 24; lost 35. Relegated with Portsmouth in 2011-12, admittedly when they were going into administration.

His main attribute for the job here appears to be his connection with Mark Ashton. That’s not the most compelling reason either!

Blackpool and Blackburn; 12 and 15 games respectively so a tiny sample. Portsmouth already on a massive downward spiral and probably couldn’t be saved. Blackpool and Blackburn were both in a bad state too at the time for various reasons IIRC.

I wouldn’t want him and don’t think we will go for him - but we should look at full context of his stats.

His most recent long stays - Oxford and now Lincoln - he’s got a very solid record, albeit at a lower level.

What a bunch of Capt Hindsight on this thread. Not one of the people complain about MA nor DH were complaining when we were top 6 a few weeks ago.

And of course further evidence of why 99% of  city fans avoid this firum:- the true smell of gas.

Back the management, we have top flight facilities and a Championship squad, though sadly half are injured. Stay up in next few weeks, crowds back in come August and we are well set up for next season

Such matters never bothered Ashton as we know too well.

I would be astonished if SL allows permanently damaged Ashton, in everyone's eyes, allowed to bring his buddy in.

Cook has certainly been there and done it and knows how to put a team together.
The issue with Holden was that he was a novice. Cook is far from that - 3 promotions with 3 clubs.

On this occasion i personally want a manager who has been there and done it in this division.

The posters who talk most on here and the regular names of fans that keep coming up on twitter are the tiniest of percentage of total fans.

So when people say 'fans think this' because of some fans views on here and twitter, I always think well how about the other 99% of fans that have not commented on the internet.

In this division?

430 appearances at this level.
2 seasons managed at this level.
52 points first year after promotion. (same as us in year 1).
59 points in the second year. (5 more than us year 2).

Spent £600k in year 1 vs our £3.5m.
Spent £6m in year 2 vs our £13m.

So, better results than we achieved in our first 2 seasons after promotion, much less money spent and a vastly inferior wage bill.

Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn were all in his very first two years of management, so surely he will have learned more and improved since then.  Who wouldn't?  More recently, he's had six years with very creditable records with Oxford and Lincoln, now flying high and only 12 places below us .

I'd be quite happy with him, but the main question for me is whether he might prefer to stay at Lincoln ...

Your 1st paragraph is patently not true, many were loudly pointing out we were that high in the league due to a great deal of fortune and despite Holden. People have been bitterly against Ashton before, during and after this period.

Your second sentence, let's be honest, is entirely nonsensical and even the point I think you're trying to make is a load of bollocks.

Thirdly, there's as much chance of us appointing Holloway as fans being be back in grounds by August.

Other than that, good post.

Appearances as a player mean virtually nothing as a manager-Wenger,Mourinho,Warnock!

52 and59 points,wow!

Bought a few decent cheap players, fair enough, but ones who will get you promotion from this division?

He might do a good job here and might not but I still don't see him as a nailed on 'messiah'

I did watch the Lincoln vs Gillingham game because Cundy and Morton for Gillingham.

Lincoln won 3-0 and I was very impressed.

But don't really know if he is the right man. Doesn't excite me for some reason

Bring back the Ashton pic.

Why not try Downsy?

Who would you see as a ‘nailed on messiah’ then?

We’re a middling Championship club with Prem aspirations. We can’t attract managers with near enough a guarantee of success. Cook seems a sensible choice.
