Because he builds teams, spots and recruits talent (rough diamonds), wins leagues....on tight budgets.  And he appears to take no shit!

As they say football is all about opinions.

I still question why another club hasn't picked up such a brilliant manager who has been out of work for 6 months.

Wednesday went for Pulis and Cardiff went for McCarthy with a contract only until the end of the season... You can see the theme there, instant results over play style.

We are 11 clear of relegation and 10 away from playoffs. This could be seen as a perfect opportunity to bring in a manager such as Cook, who can implement his philosophy ready for next season, rather than a dinosaur such as Pulis who is a better fit for just getting points on the board instantly.

Someone needs to explain to me what our setup is and why it makes us unattractive, because I am a bit confused as to how some people see it.

Is there too much interference from SL via MA? Do they have pretty much the whole say on players in and style etc like any ownership would?

Are we being lied to consistently by MA and SL very publicly about how the head coach has final say on transfers?

By setup do we mean that we have a bigger focus on the youth pathway to the first team and have a criteria to meet that coaches cant or dont want to adhere to?

Surely as a head coach or even manager, all you want to do is be on the pitch with the players, pick the team etc and have the final say about players coming in?

Surely that would take a massive weight off your shoulders?

“The head coach has final say on transfers” can be interpreted in various ways. At one extreme it might mean that  Ashton has total control over identifying new players and the head coach just says yes or no to his suggestions. The other extreme is the head coach identifies players he wants and Ashton just does the negotiations. It seems as though the situation at City is closer to the former with the head coach having limited input. From what we have been told , Paul Cook would probably want to have more control over identifying new signings which is one reason he wasn’t interested in the job

This is my fear.   MA will be well known in football circles so I suspect anyone of note would be reluctant to come here with him at the club.

Best scenario is to put Paul Simpson in as caretaker for the test of the season and overhaul the club hierarchy in the summer, then appoint a new manager.   Maybe MA can bullshit some other club into having him?   Can't see it happening, sadly.

Best scenario! You are kidding right?

If we leave it until the summer with Paul Simpson in charge (ex Northwich Victoria no less) we will be looking for a Manager / Coach who has experience to get us back out of league 1.

I'm a fan of Cook but it's worth noting that Pulis was sacked after Boxing Day...Sheffield Wednesday only offered him a 6 month deal apparently.

Same as Cardiff.

Why is a question.

We're not expecting any changes to the current set-up so it looks like it will be that set out by Steve Lansdown on the radio last Monday: survival in the Championship, finish as high as possible and go for top six next season, while selling players to balance the books, but recruiting again if that happens. It's a tough gig, no doubt.

I don't think the set-up at City on its own would rule any of those mentioned in the tweet. Paul Cook was very interested last summer and had an interview and he is likely to be considered again. Howe - who was on Premier League commentary duties for Amazon Sport last night - is likely an ambitious shot and he'll have Premier League interest in him, but possibly the chance to build something long term might sway someone like that. Bournemouth had Andy Burton for a while as a recruitment specialist, before he became a sporting director in Ireland, so again, we wouldn't expect him or anyone to have problems with how City are run.

This is taken from Gregor M. Currently doing a Q and A on Bristol Live

Maybe because he's been out of work for 6 months which in itself says a lot.

I may be a bit ignorant but just looked up the odds and viewed Paul Cooks profile and its not brilliant. Some success in Ireland, a League 2 win and League 1 play offs. That doesn't inspire me that he's the man to take us to the Prem.

Maybe not. But if he’s keeps us out of League One, I’d take that at the minute.

What a sorry state of affairs.

I’ve always thought this. On interviews with Twentyman, when pressed, he never offers a clear answer answer. I genuinely believe that Ashton’s team provide a selection of players for the manager to pick from.

If that is the case, our setup needs reviewing.

For me, the manager works with the scouts and provides a Target A, B and C for Ashton to pursue and get the best deal.

Two league two wins, a league one win and a play off place. All in the last 8 years.

I think I’m correct in saying,  that he has won more than our last 8 managers put together!!

Dunno if it's already posted but an Interview with Cook from last November- listening to it now.

Interesting to note that he is disappointed in the clamour for instant results and Social Media demanding change etc- one thing I very much like is possession as a way of securing the win and he also mentions that high turnover of players isn't desirable.

More I hear of him, the more I like! Seems to have great integrity too based on this.

Cook would be a good appointment. However, according to Gregor, Cook was declined last time because he didn't fit the club 'culture'. Whatever the hell that meant.

Edit

Sorry, I should have said culturally

Here is the actual quote:

The Robins spoke to Paul Cook in the summer and he will be considered again, though the former Wigan man was deemed as not the right fit culturally back then and the club's view on the former Portsmouth boss may not have changed since.

I don’t believe anything Gregor writes - no credibility at all in my eyes especially after the claims that the medical/physio departments were to blame for our injury list based on one unhappy player who couldn’t get fit.

Typical sensationalist sports hack.

I think others have pointed out to you before that the Williams story came from The Athletic, specifically the respected David Ornstein. Gregor did not pluck it out of the air.

And what does 'couldn't get fit' mean? It seems to imply the player is responsible. In which case presumably all our long term injured players are the in the same boat?

Plenty has been posted on here about Rolls' record at a number of clubs that you may have missed also.

I obviously didn’t clarify my comments about Gregor regarding a ‘sensationalist sport hack’ - that particular article was copied from the Athletic where the source is somewhat unclear.

Gregor almost plagiarises it and prints it which causes lots of unrest amongst not only us fans but the hierarchy at AG as well.

Personally I don’t think he should have published such an unproven article - although I do realise that he has column inches to fill............:cool2:

Bit like a Chairman of the Supporters club cowardly undermining the manager on a Football Forum

Dave.........you only have to look at storm it caused on here. Plus a couple of my City mates who we text each other both independently mentioned it having read it the Post. Neither post on here.

But you said unrest....I’d say it caused a good old discussion.  I didn’t feel any unrest.  That’s why I’m asking if anyone else did. ?
