The Bigger Club - City or Bournemouth?

Just having a  chat with a fellow City fan as to which is the bigger club. Bournemouth or Bristol City. He thinks Howe wouldn't pick us over them as they are a bigger club than City. They have parachute money plus better players. I said we have a much bigger stadium and fan base plus top range training facility. All City need is a decent manager. What makes a club bigger than another?

Bournemouth, recent stint in the premier league would make them more attractive to players if they were given a straight choice, add parachute payments and adding up the values of the combined squads. Bournemouth also have permission for the building of their new training ground as well, paused due to the pandemic in June

Bournemouth clearly.

Sad , but true

What a lack of real success does

* The ‘big’ is misleading and somewhat irrelevant IMHO

its about ‘current health and status’ and who’s the more attractive proposition for Managers and players alike

Thats what’s relevant

We do exceed them in (unfulfilled) ‘potential’

We are.

Bournemouth is a better opportunity for a manager at present, with a much better squad. But in the same way I would suggest Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday are bigger clubs than us or Coventry and Portsmouth are bigger clubs than Bournemouth.

None of it really matters but that's my take on it.

There is no doubt historically we are far bigger. Most of their life they have bumbled  about twixt fourth and third divs, under the name Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, lucky if they got 4k crowds. They did have a period of fame under John Bond in the early 70's (Macdougal and Boyer, Gabriel) but flattered to deceive, never went up.

Got lucky after nearly folding to have some dubious Russkie poor his dubious wealth into a washing machine called Dean Court, got lucky flouted FFP and went up... If they had a sustained period in the Champ, their crowds (when they come back) would dwindle from a massive 10 k, to about 4 or 5 . They've done better than us yes,, but bigger ? No way

Having parachute payments and better players doesn’t make a club bigger. We aren’t ‘bigger’ than Sunderland, Ipswich or Portsmouth yet you could argue that, on paper at least, we have better players and make more money as a Championship club.

In reality we are a bigger club than Bournemouth....the Gas are a bigger club than Bournmouth, as are many teams in L1.

You don’t get extra points or win any trophies for it so it doesn’t matter.

If Bournemouth stay at this level until their parachute payments run out, then I would say us but they have cash to burn for a couple of years so it's them at the moment.

Support wise, we are bigger but, investing their parachute money correctly would be a long term gain for them.

As you say many teams in league 1 bigger than Bournemouth....not sure about the Gas tho...on par I would say?

Completely depends on how you approach the question and what you think ‘bigger club’ means.

Obviously Bournemouth have the recent success, better playing squad and potential to go back up. For a manager who wants to achieve promotion quickly - they’re a better bet. If those are your parameters then Bournemouth.

If you’re looking at wider context inclusive of who has more support, who’s historically finished higher over time, which town/city/catchment area has greater potential to draw big crowds consistently - it’s us.

You’re genuinely probably right there. Arguably Rovers a bigger team historically by quite a margin with the ‘wider context’ factors posted above.

Bournemouth is full of fans of London clubs generally and a fair few Southampton.

Just checked Twitter:

Bournemouth: 555K Followers

City: 187K Followers

Most people would say Bournemouth as the vast majority of football fans in this country only know about the EPL and Champions League.  Had a conversation in work once and mentioned that Forest won the European Cup twice and was told that it didn’t count as it’s not the Champions League.
