How long to rebuild?

Very much agree.

Basics- pressing, effort- closing down- starting point. Energy, desire.

I'm fairly pro technical football but this should be the starting point. Any starting point.

If I was to select a midfield with energy as a starting point of the current available players, Bakinson and Massengo might be part of that 3. Semenyo would definitely be in the side- aging players not so sure on...

Vyner would also be in the side- defence or midfield?

Either. A CB,  a holding midfielder 4-1-4-1, 4-3-3/4-5-1 .. Put more effort and energy onto the pitch. Press in zones, create numerical advantage in central midfield, counter press in central midfield in units get around the bloody opposition v conceding passively a third and more of the pitch.  Rotate the centre to keep the tempo up.

This!

The FA define skill as something that can be performed on demand. Bristol City players are displaying they cannot call upon consistent effort when the team is in free fall.  Well the demand can be they have too to play.

It really is that simple isn’t it.

Yes.  It should be a non negotiable.  Six defeats in a row.  No excuses.

Agreed on that.

One of our better performances did come let's not forget at Brentford with that very setup- think it was Vyner, Massengo and Nagy in CM. Granted we couldn't gain numerical advantage but it felt like something to build on...how wrong I was!

Units- yeah how can we build this when we make two changes to a decent performance? Was thinking about this the other day, the chopping and the changing- decent performance albeit in defeat vs a strong Brentford, we play Cardiff...and 2/3 of that midfield changed! I get the appeal but a whole new combination- one of them is now injured again anyway.

Just need a man who knows what he’s doing. These players aren’t that bad.

Umm... beyond Bents and Kalas we’ve little quality.

We are a team with no wingers, left back or a midfield worthy of the name. We’ve had no leaders for 4 seasons, bar Korey, and bugger all fight.

A new manager - even a Warnock or McCarthy - is going to have a hell of a job to produce anything out of this mess......... and then, while you’re sorting our disinterested players out, you’ve got Ashton to deal with.

Are wingers that essential in the modern game? Debatable- different types of wing play too- could depend on what type you're referring to as well- modern or old school

Injuries to all your LBs will do that! Sessegnon maybe the least bad option to date. Probably doesn't help when all left footed CBs injured too- unbalances a side that little bit more.

Not how they're set up and absent no. Some useful ones individually IMO but as a unit? Doesn't help of course when you do okay at Brentford and then throw in two for debut in what will be a tough local derby! How can a midfield build up chemistry and cohesion.

rebuild? Gets some energy on the pitch and stop backing off. How high did Barnsley play because City let them???

Its an invasion game. Passive Bristol City concede territory every week. Barnsley could play as high as they did because they were allowed to. City's lifeless and non explosive forwards didn't lay a glove on them so higher they came as a unit. Barnsley squeezed the space tighter stifling a team who are not good on the ball. Collins in goal controlled the space behind and City's offsides and uncontrolled long balls gave it back them.

Might as well give the opposition a parking permit for most of the pitch.

In my simple world, and funnily enough I was chatting to @headhunter pre-game about you have to force Barnsley out of their press, their high line.

We saw virtually every pass hit too long or players run offside.  That allowed Barnsley to retain their press and high line.  15 mins in Semenyo chased a ball over the top that he managed to nip away from Andersen on the bounce, holding it up, going back to Hunt who’d got forward to support.  I’m thinking great, here we go, we’ve realised how we can beat it, take a bit off the pass use the gap between CB and WB.  We never did again.  Had we done that again, maybe twice more, then suddenly Barnsley might have to rethink.  We didn’t, therefore they had no reason to change.

At Oakwell we ride the early storm, started to beat their press and they got deeper and deeper.  We changed them.

Today we didn’t.

If there is no plan no identity at all there is nothing to rebuild? A start can be achieved simply, Very simply. In days. Put individuals onto the pitch who best meet simple achievable aims. A simple aim can be putting more pressure on opponents and closing them down. Bristol City have players including ones who have been here for years who think being in the same postcode as an opponent is putting pressure on the ball.

Its obvious who these players are.

Effort is a skill. Put more effort on the pitch.

You talkin about players like Patterson?

Barnsley play the German high pressing game as per most other  ex-Bundesliga coaches (Klopp, Guardiola, Tuchel, Hassenhuttl). There are ways to beat it by turning them quickly but we didn’t do it to any degree so had them pretty much camped in our half for most of the game.
