City mentioned in TV Dramas

I was watching McDonald & Dodds on Sunday ( I know, I know) and the story was about the murder of a ‘Bath Eagles’ Rugby player who had been signed from France for £400,000.

At one point, the male Detective Constable said “£400,000?  Bristol City can’t even buy a corner flag for that”.

Which got me thinking, which other TV shows have we been nameche Med in?  I remember the Aug Wiederkehr Pet one (Bomber) also. Can anyone think of any more?

Was there not an entire episode dedicated to a Bristol Derby that ended up with loads being rushed to A and E?

Other than the ones mentioned thats it I think.

A Bristol Derby!?!

Clearly a work of fiction...?

Bomber was a City fan in Auf Wiedersehen Pet back in the eighties.....brilliant series. Always thought the Londoner Wayne reminded me of Lee Johnson.

IIRC It went something like

Oz (talking about Newcastle United); “well at least they’re better than Bristol Rovers”

Bomber; “I agree, City fan me, always have been”.

we were also in a Two Ronnie’s sketch years ago that took the Mickey out of QPR, saying”Bristol City’s coach broke down en route to the game and they didn’t get to the stadium. At half time, the score is QPR 0 Bristol City 1”.

But didn't Bomber appear in another episode wearing a Gas shirt, causing continuity questions at the time ?

The Sweeney.

In one episode, Regan's got the 'ump because his senior, Haskins, has decided to bring in another copper from Bristol with some specialism in summat or other (what the Sweeney ain't got, probably knowledge of tractors or wellies or carrots or something) to help with a case Regan and co are getting nowhere with. He and Carter are in the office shouting/discussing the likely attributes of said West Country plod, when Carter wonders if he will be "City or Rovers" (it's always in that order, if we’re both mentioned in the same breath).

Only remember that much, can't remember said WC copper arriving or whether he showed his colours.

There was an episode filmed at AG at a night game v (I think) Plymouth which had a fan having a heart attack and being treated by paramedics in front of the EE. The crowd trouble one was filmed at Somerton Park IIRC.

Really! Can't imagine LJ as a lady killer myself or, if imaging the actor, lead singer of a heavy rock band

Didn't mean the actual character in the programme....just his features such as voice and expressions.

Yes I heard the corner flag comment....my first thoughts were... we must be buying those corner flags from Mark Ashtons brother !?‍♂️

In years gone by, before we were all aware of political correctness, “Bristol Cities” often got a mention, usually in a rather smutty programme

Nothing smutty about the Benny Hill show. Or to that matter, the Dick Emery show.

Not us but who can forget Nick Frost as the dim copper complete with s*g shirt in Hot Fuzz?

I almost did until just now!
Also, I just remembered about the E4 teen drama series Skins, where one of the characters went out with someone who played for "Bristol Rovers reserves" but made out like he was a much bigger player than what he was...

@Dave L, you must've squeezed in a City reference or two somewhere, surely?

A fair few. My favourites were a firm of solicitors called Coles, Carey and Hill, and a company called Golborne and Carey who had premises on Ashton Rd.

I also thought that "Bath Eagles" must share the same medical team as Bristol City when it turned out that the player had been signed with an injury which meant that (even if he had not been murdered) he could not play rugby again, having passed the medical!

The story also seemed to reference the story of Emiliano Sala, who was signed by Cardiff from Nantes FC (although the rugby club was "Racing Nantes" I think), but tragically died in the English Channel in that plane crash, before he played a game for his club (obviously very different circumstances).

Teachers & Skins made references to both Bristol clubs, unsurprisingly given they were both filmed here.   Skins piss take of Lewis Haldane was great.
