Who are Bristol City's Rivals?

At the moment, Cardiff are the only team that come close to a rival. It’s not a major rivalry but they are geographically close and in the same division.

After that, it is tough to find any. It is years since we have been in the same division as Rovers or Swindon. I could not name who plays for either team and take no interest in their results. I can’t think of a team as a rival when there is simply no competition between us.

I honestly care more about non local teams in the Championship far more than I do Rovers these days but, even then, there isn’t much. Swansea fans seem to get a bit overexcited when they play us, Millwall annoy me at the moment as they beat us so easily and Birmingham fans come across as implausibly arrogant arseholes but rivals would be strong in any sense for those.

It’s all a bit sparse.

It's a nothing rivalry. Cardiff will never come remotely close to Rovers as a rival.

I think it’s a generational thing.

im in my early 40s and I think I’m probably the last generation to really despise Rovers, due to both on and off the field battles.

My children are 15, 10 and 7, season ticket holders most of their lives, I can tell them Rovers are our rivals all I want, but we’ve played them only once and have never been in the same division.

There is practically nothing that fuels the rivalry for them.

First question is odd - "When did you become a fan of the Championship?" as if we are fans of the league and then picked a team to support within it! I think i put something to the effect that i became a fan when we got promoted into the league.

Easy survey to complete though.

Gas then Cardiff.

Swindon would probably be next, but I'm not that bothered about them, don't look out for their results or anything.

Was just the 14/15 season where they were up the top with us where it became a bit more of a rivalry I guess.

Not sure many even look for cardiff's results. I certainly don't.

I was a kid at school in 80s and 90s where at that point it was probs 50/50 City and Gas.

Rovers are our only proper rivals for me - in fact this season has only been bearable because of them

This.

For our researcher, it's the gas but we never play them any more as they are utterly hopeless.

Actually, from a distance, Keith Fear could look a bit like Benny Hill...??

Maybe he would if it wasn't Ernie Hunt in the pic, not Keith fear. ?

You can absolutely guarantee if we drew Rovers in the FA cup next season it would easily sell out (covid permitting) the atmosphere and tension/violence around the ground would be unlike any game next season aswell.
Historically they will ALWAYS be our biggest rivals, people are just kidding themselves thinking otherwise.

The Gas become less and less significant with every passing year. When I was at school 20 years ago, they were rivals. They're not anymore and haven't been for a very long time, IMO. Cardiff are probably our biggest rivals nowadays, less so since they left Ninian though.

Our closest rivals in recent years has been Baadiff.

Prior to that we had a massive one with Swindle during 2015 (incidentally I am watching a replay of the 2015 League One Play-off Final between Swindle and Preston where Swindle go 1 down after 2 minutes and that *** Thompson gets stretchered off) when they cheated like **** and then stayed down and Flint said No No No!

Apart from that there is Tinpot Rovers who we haven't played in the league for donkey's years. Their only shouts are beating us in a Paintpot Cup semi before going on to lose the final (which we have won 3 times), a grainy video of them beating us to win the Third Division Championship some 31 years ago and bleating on about 1982 of which only Neanderthal Tote Enders can actually remember.

Traditionally to most of the fan base it's Bristol Rovers. But I'm in my early 20s, how can Rovers be a rival for me when we've played them once since I started going to Ashton Gate in 2007? They can't be.

As discussed on this thread more and more it's becoming Cardiff. England vs Wales, the team we actually compete with in the league the most, a good atmosphere when we play them. I'm sure most over a certain age will disagree, as I said traditionally our rivals are Rovers, but for me and many of my friends it's Cardiff now.

I dont like swindon,

They are still banging on about being surrounded that day.

Thousands, on the pitch, god knows how many outside.

They did bring a massive following that day, and the fa cup game they brought loads too.

We didnt get much joy against them on the pitch, at home in those days, Recall micky hazard playing a blinder for them, here early 90s.

Good player he was,

As a City fan living in Swindon since 1997 I used to get a lot of stick - good natured banter really - when they were in the Championship under Steve McMahon and we were in one of our seemingly endless stretches in League 1.
They don't say much to me these days by way of banter - even during our recent terrible streak - I wonder why?!!!!

I no longer "hate" Rovers - I used to, but not anymore. I just find them hilarious. I do look out for their results though, love it when they lose, their relegation has been the best thing to happen this season, and I'd be there if we draw them in a cup. They are so shite it's unbelievable, and their fans are ridiculous.

Rovers are as relevant to City as Notts County are to Forest, or Port Vale are to Stoke.

I do hate Cardiff though, with a passion. Best moment ever was Scott Murrays iconic goal celebration in this derby victory:

Swindon had 30 or so on remand in horfield in about 1987.

I got told they were a real nasty bunch.

They have their scumbags like most clubs sadly - even ours.

Swindon's fiercest rivals are Oxford, not us (although they don't like us much) - they HATE Oxford United. It all stems from the British Leyland industrial action in the 1970s - it's a 'car' replica of the Portsmouth v Southampton 'Docks war' rivalry.
I can't remember if it was Swindon or Oxford who 'broke' the strike, but it fuelled a hatred which still exists today.

PS - I suspect that Cardiff regard Swansea as their main rivals. Like Swindon I expect we are secondary rivals to them.

One Rival ONLY for us long in the tooth supporters. Some of you young un's didn't go through the pain we had to on Mondays at work after losing to the blighters on a Saturday. We have even been given campaign medals for the misery we endured. ?

Old ens can remember our rivalry with the Gas from 20 odd years ago...and still argue that.

Swindon isn't and has never been a rival...it's just been a club nearer us than any other, like Cardiff.

How can you call rivals teams that are 40 miles away or two leagues apart?

It's probably why we are so 'nice'...no local competition or rivalry, no  passion, no pressure etc.

Just a bunch of overpaid pussies, playing football under no pressure, in a nice City, with no hostility, apart from a few rants on a few forums, overseen by a nice owner looking for nice DNA which equals...' nice'.

It's a bit like being a billionaire who can only buy friends and buy prostitutes...loads of money but doesn't get any respect or real love.

The saddest you can actually be.

Manchester to Liverpool is 40 miles and quite the rivalry. I don't think distance comes into it

For many fans it depends who you know, I don't really care about Rovers because I only know a couple of people who support them. Never had the "banter" directly with them as we've never been in the same league since we've been of an age to even discuss it.

Swindon though, I hate them. Grew up in Wiltshire, everyone I knew was Swindon or City, we lived for those games at school. Usually 20-30 of us travel up together on the train and head off to our different ends of the ground, then plenty of abuse and arguing on the train home. Sadly they usually got the better of us.

In terms of players, I dont think they really care anymore unless they are local lads.

Yep - still my favourite ever game and probably always will be. Atmosphere was electric, the intimidation levels were off the scale and the result was just incredible.  Me and my mate even escaped a kicking after being made to walk back to the station (we were parked 10 mins from the ground) where the police escort left us to our own devices as everyone went into the train station and their mob were waiting under the Bridge. Luckily they were an honourable lot and let us off as we both had our (much) younger brothers with us, so we got off with our tails between our legs and our ears ringing with friendly advice on how best to get back over the Severn Bridge and how quickly to get there ?

I don't look for Rovers' results either, though.

Don't get me wrong - I'm in my late 30s and, when I first got into football in 1989/1990, the rivalry was massive and that kept going through the 1990s up to the early 2000s but we've not been in the same divison since 2001 and have played each other 3 times in 19 years and once in the last 14. And that last time was 8 years ago.

I can see why Rovers would want to keep the rivalry alive as there's a bigger club in the city doing better than them but I don't give a **** about the supposed rivalry with Rovers. What rivalry? We're in a higher division, have won more trophies (neither of us do great there admittedly!), have better players, a better stadium, better community initiatives. There is simply no area where they even begin to compete with us and seeing Rovers as a rival feels like a sixth former bullying someone in their first year at Secondary School.

I'm not massively invested in the rivalry with Cardiff, and it is absolutely nowhere near as intense or as interesting as our rivalry with Rovers was in the 1990s, but it is still a damn sight more of a rivalry than I feel with a club that we've barely played in two decades. I'd like more of a rivalry but Cardiff are easily the closest thing we have at the moment. Rovers are an irrelevance.

I truly believe Rovers wont be here in 20 yrs time. When do you ever see anyone wearing the tesco top? Its rare, certainly among youngsters. I do know several Rovers fans but they are old buggers. I dont see the young generation being interested in them. Why the **** would you pay money to go to Chernobyl and watch that shite?
