The most hyped City player ever.

On the flip side, some of our best players signed with little or no hype...Bob Taylor arrive from Leeds (I think) and no-one knew about him - what a player he turned out to be.

A mate of mine back in the day was from the NE, he said Taylor grew up playing for some miners' team, who were legendary for producing good players. Leeds boo-boys got to him, which happened a lot back then. He was a legend here, and he's revered as a God at West Brom. Plus a spell at Bolton, who also think the world of him.

Offer him a sitter, watch him fluff it. Offer him a 25 yarder...GOAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!

What an absolute legend.

Not one of ours, but he had a stinker.

Mickey bell, having chris waddle in his pocket, at home to burnley.

At one point, bell did a cruyff move on the halfway line.

Now that was a player waddle.

To be fair, Waddle was 37 by that point!

That’s unfair, Marin was unlucky, it just didn’t  work out for him.   England youth player great prospect.  Let’s not for forget,  Danny Wilson’s team also had good quality strikers at the club. Hard to break through.  He had one chance hit the post.  Then we never saw him again.

I remember a conversation I had with other ex players of that time and friends of Marvin.  We talked about that match what would of happened if that shot went in...  It could of been a different outcome.  Some players make it, most don’t.  He still played at a good level.

We aren’t really discussing the merits of these players but the huge expectations generated around them.

Famously, Marvin Brown was quoted as thé ‘ first ten million pound player ‘ at City and then nothing. That’s quite some hype and it came from a professional in the game not us over optimistic fans !

Following on from your point , one shot hitting a post doesn’t make or break a career.

Its all about opinions. I can't recall another City goalkeeper saving TWO penalties in a match but David James did.

John Shaw, Crystal Palace away around 78/79....ish. One of my early memories of watching City (which means it's probably wrong..!!)

You could say both Brown brothers fit into this category. Both were linked with top flight moves and played youth football for England. Aaron I believe was in the same youth team as Owen? He showed glimpses but never even made Championship football did he?

Ribeiro was another who's career was absolutely screwed by injuries and was hyped to be a top player.

I written here before about my sitting adjacent the Brown’s father when Marvin made his debut. Aaron was truly an exceptional talent and in glimpses showed he might just have been the most talented local lad ever. Problem was when faced with ‘active opposition’ his silky skills and vision were found wanting. He just couldn’t do it match day. In the face of stiff opposition from fellow fans I defended him to the hilt, until even his own father professed sadness that we’d never see how truly great he might have been.

Marvin might have torn up the schoolboy record books, but whether it was late youth access to girls and booze I don’t know, but playing against men he was wholly out of his depth. Lasted shorter than a well sucked wine gum.

I think many hereabouts miss the point of the OP question - who might have been the most over-hyped player, as many names proffered either were once good, had productive careers (even if not with us,) or were never that ‘hyped’ in the first place.

There have been a few later claimed to have been hyped though in truth were crap unknowns all along (Engvald, Jihad Muntasser, Zwjinenberg et al) but for me over-hyped means somebody who stuck around for ages, carried a stupendously over-rated profile, yet who eventually delivered the square-root of zip.

In which case Shaun Penny stands high on the shoulders of hyped mediocrity.

OK, he had the excuse of marrying into a fortune but for all those seasons of ‘will he make his debut’, ‘can he really be as good as they’re all saying’, well, Shaun knocks the rest into a cocked hat.

Nick Carle? Had a lot of hype after a few weeks of signing him, and I thought he was pretty poor, then we sold him.

One of Neil Warnock's worst signings according to Colin himself.

Thought Carle was alright to be fair! Got around the pitch and did a job (without adding goals/assists!)

Probably in the minority here but I thought that guy we signed from Celtic under Gary Johnson was pretty crap - the one who had played in the champion's league for them - Paul Hartley was it? He was the one who's beard growth was about the best thing about him!!!

To be fair the Celtic fans did say at the time we got him that his legs had gone.

Worst take on this thread. Cracking dead ball specialist and a real captain in my eyes.

IIRC, after leaving us he scored a hat-trick of pens in one game for Aberdeen

I accepted that my opinion was going to be ‘against the grain’ for most, but really - to use a hat-trick in the Scottish league - of PENALTIES - as an example of him being great for us is hilarious ?

Yes, I am THAT old. Cooper only ever seemed to sign midgets as strikers, so he brings in this lump. First touch of an Ocean Liner.

Went to Chester and then bloody scored against us, I know, I was there...

PS thought it was £30k? And that was Cooper's highest fee. To think we got Alan Walsh for £18.5k or something...robbery...

Alan Walsh. If we were to reverse the thread and consider the most underrated player on arrival, Alan would get my vote.

Although I guess there’s quite a few candidates from the 1970’s top flight squad.

Walsh disrupted our pressing game when he came in, did the some total of nought whilst here.

People got giddy over stuff at Cov after previously stating he was shocking at Brum, or too lightweight etc.

Lots of revisionism ongoing here.

Tony Dinning.. fair choice here for overhyped. ?

Tony "effing" Dinning. brilliant on loan with us and no sooner did he sign and get his feet under the table turned into the laziest, useless player ive ever seen

Which bit of the quotation that I used saying "Dead ball specialist" did you not understand? It's quite simple, really

I dunno about underrated, under valued for sure - we utterly robbed Darlo.

If only Walsh had some pace, he'd have been top notch, that left foot (right wasn't bad, either)
