66 years playing Bowls. Fair play to you.

Now on another matter what's this I'm hearing about the old New Look shop in Nailsea becoming a strip club.

There are shop fitters in there so I doubt it’ll be a strip club!

I played in Goal because of my asthma (and not because I was fat!).  I had the yellow and black striped keeper kit, worn by Keith Welch, which I loved!  When I was older I played in Goal for RMC Wick with the Grandfather of Ryley Towler!

Two goalkeepers you say? Your goals against record must have been tidy.

First position was inside right as junior school team.

Then RB and RM through youth football.

Then ended up as a CF in Adult football.

My strengths were set pieces.  Took most free kicks. Definitely a better natural footballer than athlete.

Was a better Golfer and Skier.

Best position now is in the pub talking bollox.

I started off as a ‘keeper in Junior School. Still can recall the magical moment when the games master would enter the classroom with a big cardboard box full of neatly folded first team shirts and he’d call out the team and one-by-one you headed to the front of the class to be given the shirt.

Unfortunately, while the School would be held up now as a beacon of fairness and equality, because we had a girl in the team - albeit David Rogers sister, who actually was very good - we were banned by the FA from playing competitive matches so every game was a friendly.

Absolutely hated being a ‘keeper but was ok’ish. Unfortunately as the Comprehensive School had a collection of decent outfield players - a few signed up by Spurs and Brum City - I was condemned to standing in between the posts for them as well. We were for a couple of years the ‘Pride of Bristol’ or Avon as it was then, both on and off the pitch!

Massive relief to eventually get outfield. Centre-forward, then as the strength went to right midfield. Proudest moment was hammering a screamer past the Tamworth goalkeeper top left bins from outside the box, having run through from half way line and beating their full back. Still dine out on that one today.

Like many, hung the boots up when spent more time in the A&E dept than on the pitch. The last injury being caused by a striking miner who ripped open my shin to the bone with a tackle 5 seconds into the match. Tamworth were strike breakers at the time, so other mining areas took vengeance on any local team from the Tamworth area!

Think Harry Kane started off in goal. Really is part of a forward’s education for me and am surprised that more Clubs don’t do education of their strikers as to a goalies mind. The number of goals I scored because you could ‘read the keeper’ was massive. The chip in particular to me, is a much under-used weapon in a strikers armoury, as is rounding the keeper.

Started as a right back who enjoyed venturing forward. Left foot eventually became stronger foot, which led on to a very productive time as a left winger, which is where I finished my illustrious but under publicised career.

I coulda been a contender.

In my younger days at school I played on the wing because I was fast. I had a god-awful ball control though and never got picked for the school side.

After leaving school there was a gap of about 6 years of serious smoking and drinking, before I started playing 5-a-side regularly again at about 23 with some mates from work. I really enjoyed it and got my fitness back. Somehow, amazingly my ball control had naturally improved to 'average' rather than god-awful. Sadly I couldn't commit to a 'proper' team at that time though because I worked weekends.

After moving to Swindon in the late 1990s I was still working nights and weekends, but kept up my fitness by playing 5-a-side and the occasional 11-a-side friendly, where I tended to play either wide midfield or up front.

It wasn't until the age of 35, when I finally came off shiftwork and I joined 2 local sides; one played in the Swindon Sunday League and the other in the Wiltshire League. I played mostly at Left Midfield, which was by far my favourite position. I had lost a lot of my pace by that time - and my ball control was still 'average', but one thing I DID have - which proved really useful - was that over the years of playing 5-a-side I had taught myself to use both feet pretty effectively. This meant that during an attack I could either cut in and shoot, or stay wide and whip over a cross - depending on which way the defender committed to I could simply go the other way. My left foot self-training got me confident enough to take a penalty with it on one occasion and scored - although we were winning 3-0 at the time so it wouldn't have been a disaster if I'd failed to score!!!
I also became a bit of a 'dead ball' specialist and took most of my teams free kicks and corners. David Beckham in all but looks, fame and money!!!

I stopped playing competitive league football in my early 40s - I was too slow to be effective any more, but I  kept up with the 5-a-side - playing in a few cup competitions and the occasional 11-a-side friendly - the odd charity game here and there.

In the summer of 2019 I became very seriously ill. I needed a major operation and was knocked out for 6 months recovering. I have not played since then because we have been in lockdown in one form or another. I haven't restarted playing yet - but I've started in the gym to get my cardio fitness levels up and hope to be pulling on my Astro's again some time next month. At the age of 54 and carrying a bit of timber I have to be a bit careful of pushing the old ticker too far!!

I played “soccer” in high school is the US. My coach played a diamond at the back and I played on the left despite being right footed. It was kind of a morph between left back and LCB in a 3. Think he said it was something used when he was watching while growing up(he would have been 40-50s in early 2000s). It worked quite well to be fair. I was a good aggressive defender then and played up for my age.

Didn’t play my final year as we moved to Texas and the coaching and passion for the game was a lot lower there. It was all about American football there. Anyway, regretted missing that season and was the last time I played competitively in eleven a side.

Is there a manager's position available? I also established and ran my work's team, including one genius move to play a lad who played regularly as a CB in club football to be our number 9.

He scored 5 in his first game (seriously...he was an absolute beast).

Everyone thought I was some kind of football genius.

Not being funny, but if she was half as scary as her brother, who'd have had the stones to tell her she couldn't play?

Ha. Yes, think it ran in the family.

Strong, solid midfield player from what I recall. Very competitive on the pitch, but pleasant and friendly off it. Family had a florist shop on Westbury high street I think.

Pity for her that the woman’s game wasn’t then as it is now. She could have easily made a professional WSL and probably an international.

Started out in schoolboy football as inside left which morphed into what would be called a number 10 these days (only with a bit of "attitude"). Also drifted wide left or right on occasion as I was a bit quick in those days, couldn't run for a bus now..

Right half - kids ask your grandad!

I had Dave Smiths shooting prowess but pace more like Cyril Smith.

Silky or lithe would probably have described me then (and I did represent Gloucestershire FA up to U19's), where as fat and old with broken knees covers it now.

I played anywhere in the spine really. Sweeper or midfield in the mould of Jan Molby. Up front thought I was a bit of a Sheringham type. Neither of these had to contend with pitch 19 on the Downs though.

Speed was not an attribute of mine...
