Shit decision, UEFA will follow suit with Euros and then you have a major football competition each summer, the players then never have a summer off and becomes a repetitive cycle. When you look at cricket when they have a packed schedule it means them taking breaks/rotation to miss a series to have time off but you know football would never do that and push players. This is all about money again But it shows how football is at odds with itself as its administrators are so far distant from those who actually coach and play the game. OneCity
Proposed by Saudi Arabia eh. A big footballing nation that one. Almost as big as Qatar you'd have to say, who get to host the WC next year. This is more BS in the same vein as the European Super league. All about the money, never the players, the supporters, or the sport itself. It stinks. Also, in my opinion, if you double the regularity of the competition (every two years instead of four), you'll effectively end up halving its prestige. Mr Popodopolous
I never thought I'd say it but bring back Sepp Blatter? Well maybe not really but his replacement seems worse (if a lot more politically acceptable and less politically controversial let's say), when you add in VAR too. Blatter didn't like VAR. Drew the line at goal lline tech IIRC. Interesting on another FIFA note as well, to see that Head of La Liga has accused Head of FIFA of being behind or involved with the ESL stuff. Infantino didn't categorically deny. https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/we-should-look-at-the-facts-not-rumours-fifa-boss-gianni-infantino-refuses-to-deny-having-met-breaka_sto8329936/story.shtml This guy while probably cleaner, feels worse in other respects. 2015
Would absolutely kill the World Cup that, the fact it is every 4 years makes it more special. There is also something romantic about the World Cup which captures the mood of a forever changing World. To scrap it for every 2 years makes it less appealing to win

When you look at cricket when they have a packed schedule it means them taking breaks/rotation to miss a series to have time off but you know football would never do that and push players. Full article: Fifa is to look at holding the World Cup every two years, rather than four, having launched an unprecedented study into changes to the football calendar. A proposal by Saudi Arabia for the feasibility study for the men’s and women’s World Cups won overwhelming backing among Fifa’s member nations at its annual Congress yesterday — though any such move is likely to be fiercely fought by Uefa as it would have a huge impact on its European Championship tournaments. Gianni Infantino, Fifa’s president, said there was an opportunity for changes to the international match calendar after 2024 and denied that having the tournament more often would devalue it. “Every year in England you have 380 games by the same teams and everyone is very happy with the Premier League so I don’t think the repetitive element would be harming,” he said. “No decisions will jeopardise what we are doing, we know the value of the World Cup. What we need to study is what kind of competitions do we want and need for the world, for Europe, for Africa, for Asia. We will put the sporting element as a priority, not the commercial element. You don’t need to be Einstein to know that if you put World Cups every two years you will double the revenues.” Arsène Wenger, Fifa’s chief of global football development, has previously suggested a biennial World Cup. Uefa declined to comment but insiders are confident a World Cup every two years can be opposed. Infantino said: “We need to look at some of the countries outside of Europe. In Africa, out of 54 countries only five qualify for the World Cup. If you don’t qualify what are you doing for the next four years? Nothing? We will study it and see what it means in terms of the health of players, disruption or non-disruption of national leagues and international competitions.” Infantino called Saudi Arabia’s proposal “eloquent and detailed” and 166 national federations voted in favour with 22 against. Yasser al-Misehal, the Saudi federation president, told the Congress: “It is time to review how the game is structured and to consider what is best for the future of our sport.” Meanwhile, Infantino insisted there was no “collusion” on the part of Fifa over the Super League project, despite Javier Tebas, the La Liga president, claiming he was involved in the plans. It's football socialism right there, you get there on merit based on how good you are not out of a token gesture because you are from Africa. Maybe stop allowing Africans from competing for England, France or Germany might help them a bit more Mr Infantino? If Denmark were an African Nation they would qualify every time and they are regarded as about 10th-15th strongest in Europe.

ScottishRed
Saudi Arabia are on a mission to finance and to an extent, control major sport. There is a proposal being floated for an alternative golf tour, funded by guess who. I am not into golf but I believe that it is causing some waves in the sport with some players all for it £! And others not. Look also at the potential fight between Fury and Joshua - madness to have that in SA in August ( although it may not happen now], but for other reasons. How long before they buy a major European club, they tried for Newcastle and that was ‘blocked’ but it will happen one day soon.

Baba Yaga
Looks like the suits in charge would rather ruin the game than potentially take a pay cut, I suppose that it's their job to keep growing the sport but they are going to harm the product if they continue down this path. I know I always complain about the 24 team European championships but qualifying is now an uncompetitive bore for many countries and so will be the group stages next month. They don't care about that though because overall it's more games and more money. The European super league showed that fans don't desire changes to competitions we have. Football is going to suffer a recession (although the PL did ok equalling their old TV deal) and the top clubs plus organisations like FIFA and UEFA are thinking of ways to keep the revenues coming in. If they ruin the integrity of competitions (devalue the world cup, automatic big clubs in champions league etc) they are going to damage things in the long term, an example of monetising the game and then allowing it to corrupt the decision making. Serious note, of course it's all Sportswashing. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE- those 3 all seem to act in a way that indicates they have that goal, though UAE is further along the road to 'niceness'/respectability with its attraction to Western tourists too, in a way that the other 2 probably aren't. Decent article that goes into what you say and beyond. While no expert on the region, purely guesswork but I expect that UAE the least brutal of the 3 states, but it's a pretty low bar. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/28/saudi-arabia-has-spent-at-least-15bn-on-sportswashing-report-reveals
1960maaan
Year 1 - World Cup Comp Year 2 - Euro Qualifier Year 3 - Euro Finals Year 4 - World Cup qualifiers Works well enough. With all the Leagues, some playing to a different schedule , how is it supposed to work? They don't care, see pound signs (insert own currency ) and run with an idea before it's thought through or logistics sorted. Money, money, money is all that this is about. Wait until they realise that fans can't or wont be fleeced any more. I sometimes think that apart from chasing even more money, these things are thought up by people trying to prove their own worth. They work in an environment where large change is minimal , and rare. So instead of just tweaking and persevering with something that works, they feel the need to try and be radical to say look at me !
HitchinRed
It would be interesting to see which countries voted against this. From an outsider’s perspective, I’d be surprised if many African countries went for this. The African Cup of Nations is a good competitive event, which the whole continent seems to get behind. This would be lost, and instead only a much smaller number of countries would have the privilege of getting beaten by the rich nations every other year. More money for the ‘Haves’ and less for the ‘Have Nots’.

pongo88
The people who come up with these crazy suggestions don’t understand the financial concept of supply and demand. If something is in low supply, and the demand remains the same, then the price goes up. When there is over supply, and the demand remains the same, the price goes down. With a World Cup every 2 years demand (to watch it on TV) would probably go down as most people would be fed up with endless, often meaningless, matches.
