Robert Atkinson - Now Signed (Merged)

Really pleased with this one. I can't say I've seen him play but picking up promising youngsters who are keen to impress is exactly the transfer strategy I'd like to see us revert back to. Interestingly he's another French speaker and had an upbringing overseas similar to Taylor Moore.

Personal information
Full name Robert Philip Atkinson[1]
Date of birth 13 July 1998 (age 22)
Place of birth Chesterfield, England
Height 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m)[2]
Position(s) Defender
Club information
Current team
Oxford United
Number 22
Youth career
  Cannes
Senior career*
Years Team Apps (Gls)
2016–2017 Basingstoke Town 30 (2)
2017–2019 Fulham 0 (0)
2019  Braintree Town (loan) 15 (0)
2019–2020 Eastleigh 20 (1)
2020– Oxford United 39 (1)
2020  Eastleigh (loan) 4 (0)

* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 18:19, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

It's quite notable that he was picked up by Fulham from non-league but subsequently released in 2019 before a move to Eastleigh.

Interesting to see if Atkinson gets in ahead of Baker.

Baker much stronger than Atkinson, but Atkinson more mobile and much better bringing the ball out.

It's a bonus that Atkinson can also play left back. Played there in his non league days I think.

Get this done and assuming King comes in, it will be just a striker needed. If say Pigott is signing soon then that will be overall good business done early imo.

Nothing unusual to see a young CB get their first opportunity as a full-back….out of real danger’s way.  Look at Vyner….who’d never played RB, then made his pro debut there!  I wouldn’t be holding out much expectation that he will play LB for us…of course I might be wrong.  He’s coming to compete with Nathan Baker as far as I’m concerned, with the short / medium view of being 1st choice.  They should be pushing each other.

I picked up on the Cannes stuff when he was discussed during last season.  Possibly where he gets his technical passing from the back from.

Maybe he can convince ex-Fulham teammate Stevie Humphrys to sign too.

Yep. Just means that if we have say Dasilva and Pring out at the same time which could easily happen then we have a left footed option there in Atkinson.

Not sure if Towler will be loaned out or if he will be ready to come in. With this signing I'd probably be tempted to loan him out.

The youngsters and loans is gonna be a real interesting one to watch over the coming weeks.  A couple might benefit from a Lg1/2 loan, others may not….imho Alex Scott nor Tommy Conway should be loaned out….they should be given every opportunity to get 1st team minutes.  Nige candy BT may have very different views to me ???

What I like about this is that we were weak at set pieces and crosses last season, and opposition teams to some extent played on it.

While Kalas is very good at blocking shots and has a good leap on him, he seems not to get a lot of clearing headers when defending our penalty area (cue davefevs posting a stat to prove me wrong!).

With Kalas/Baker or Kalas/Atkinson I feel that we could be more solid at the back, and hopefully more of an attacking threat from our own set pieces too!

I wonder if Kalas keeps playing well and being highlighted in post match reviews whether we will be made an offer we can’t refuse and therefore he won’t be in a partnership with either Baker or Atkinson

Reading the Oxford fans forum a lot of them seem very disappointed to lose him and some reckon his transfer value will 100% increase. Also has alot of potential. Really excited for this one

Oxford fan I work with is gutted about this potentially happening citing him as the best defender they’ve ever had.

Not forgetting Vyner potentially at RB, at 6’2”, gives us a bit more aerial ability.  Just need Dasilva to have a growth spurt ???

We signed him for about £8mil, I think if we could recoup that we'd sell him but can't really see that happening to be honest.

cant see it this season, i think all major money moves within the championship are on hold now until revenues are stabilised again. prem will be only league with cash to splash, even then it wont be all teams

Depends if a premier league club came in for a relegated prem CB. Domino effect and all that (someone had to say it with Ashton gone)

if we sign Atkinson then it has to be a 3 at the back kalas baker Atkinson. looks very solid. Zac i am not convinced is good enough but only my opinion.

Baker will last 10 minutes in that formation.

I don't think that will be Nigel's preferred system. Unless he brings in a right wing back. I'd be surprised if Simpson is here to do that role.

Think you are right, prefer a 3-5-2 as default myself but everything about NP so far screams an orthodox 4 man defence. Building from the back and being less flaky.  Can't blame him for that IMO.

Is that a bit of itk or guess?

Any idea what he’s had done?

Blows my theory out the door ???

Not sure exactly, is about to come off them (may have recently) but definitely not going to make the start of the season so a transfer is very unlikely.

George Nurse to Cheltenham

Saw the Cheltenham journalist say they were expecting to sign a Championship defender & immediately thought of Nurse, seemingly behind Pring & potentially Towler too as back up Dasilva, he’s 22 now so seems highly likely.

I don’t think we plan on selling him, but with Ben White going to Everton, Brighton will be on the lookout for a replacement & will know that him and Webster played well together.

Kalas cost us £8m though, and I can’t see us selling at a loss so they’d have to pay a decent amount if any Prem club come calling.

Is what I was told last night, along with Atkinson being presented this morning in a city shirt. Pics were taken yesterday. Time will tell, was informed that the concourse under dolman was closed off yesterday as that’s where the entrance to the roof is.

We will take a loss on Kalas as he's had 2 seasons since signing. £5 million would be nice.  It's really a matter of what we could do with the fee we get and the saved wages.  If that allows us to manouevre ourselves into a better squad position then take the money.  If the issues with Baker are irrepairable I can see him being sold.

I would be amazed if Brighton signed him.  He's not a ball playing CB. I can see him in the Bundesliga though.

cundy to Gillingham

Taylor Moore to sunderland

who knows.

I would suspect we’re giving Oxford a player as part of the deal, either perm or season loan. Which you’d imagine would be Moore or Cundy (depending on how bad injured)
