It does beg the question- if he was that good why would would be coming to us?!

Because we are a natural step up. All teams going for promotion wouldn't be looking at league one defenders.

I wonder if Cundy might go the other way, even if on loan, as a sweetener?  Not been seen in any training videos (thanks for correcting me JonD), and an Oxford boy originally.

Wow Dave you’re really concerned about Cundy!

I think our recent transfer history speaks for itself to be honest, if you are a young ambitious player than Bristol City is a club proven to develop and then more importantly not stand in your way if a Prem team comes calling.. Atkinson and his agent will be well aware of that fact and it will be a big pull, as will the opportunity to work with Nigel Pearson aswell I’d imagine.

Appears that he was identified early on as a key target so be good to conclude this so he can get fully involve with pre-season preparations. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/bristol-city-closing-defender-wanted-5599878
Signing for us for around £1.5m seems a decent outcome for both clubs and the player.

Can someone explain what early doors means (and therefore late doors)? It’s a genuine question, as opposed to me being a pedantic old fart, which may well be the case. I first heard ‘Big Ron’ Atkinson use the former term and its been repeated ad infinitum since, but only in a football context, and never understood it, as opposed to “early days”. I always thought early Doors was Light My Fire....wish I’d kept my mono copy of their first album. Maybe early doors and late doors are Aldous Huxley’s Doors of Perception and Big Ron had just read it, which I haven’t?

I heard it from Ron Atkinson first too - I always assumed he made it up.

Just to put it out there - is this lad any better than say Moore or Cundy? These two have played League 1 football and have done well… Like Atkinson.

@Davefevs any stats?😂

Put these up before, but here they are

And here’s some in comparison to Cundy.

Coloured bars - signify numbers, e.g. passes per 90 mind

Grey bars (behind coloured bars) - signify successful / accuracy %

Interesting to see if Atkinson gets in ahead of Baker.

Baker much stronger than Atkinson, but Atkinson more mobile and much better bringing the ball out.

It's a bonus that Atkinson can also play left back. Played there in his non league days I think.

Get this done and assuming King comes in, it will be just a striker needed. If say Pigott is signing soon then that will be overall good business done early imo.

Really pleased with this one. I can't say I've seen him play but picking up promising youngsters who are keen to impress is exactly the transfer strategy I'd like to see us revert back to. Interestingly he's another French speaker and had an upbringing overseas similar to Taylor Moore.

Personal information
Full name Robert Philip Atkinson[1]
Date of birth 13 July 1998 (age 22)
Place of birth Chesterfield, England
Height 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m)[2]
Position(s) Defender
Club information
Current team
Oxford United
Number 22
Youth career
  Cannes
Senior career*
Years Team Apps (Gls)
2016–2017 Basingstoke Town 30 (2)
2017–2019 Fulham 0 (0)
2019  Braintree Town (loan) 15 (0)
2019–2020 Eastleigh 20 (1)
2020– Oxford United 39 (1)
2020  Eastleigh (loan) 4 (0)

* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 18:19, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

It's quite notable that he was picked up by Fulham from non-league but subsequently released in 2019 before a move to Eastleigh.

Nothing unusual to see a young CB get their first opportunity as a full-back….out of real danger’s way.  Look at Vyner….who’d never played RB, then made his pro debut there!  I wouldn’t be holding out much expectation that he will play LB for us…of course I might be wrong.  He’s coming to compete with Nathan Baker as far as I’m concerned, with the short / medium view of being 1st choice.  They should be pushing each other.

I picked up on the Cannes stuff when he was discussed during last season.  Possibly where he gets his technical passing from the back from.

Maybe he can convince ex-Fulham teammate Stevie Humphrys to sign too.

Yep. Just means that if we have say Dasilva and Pring out at the same time which could easily happen then we have a left footed option there in Atkinson.

Not sure if Towler will be loaned out or if he will be ready to come in. With this signing I'd probably be tempted to loan him out.
