How do you find being a city fan living in Swindon just out of interest?

It’s fine mate.
When I moved here they were in the Championship under McMahon and we were still in League 1. I used to get a lot of stick but you rise above it.
I just take it on the chin - they don’t really tease me any more !!!!

I’ve never experienced anything more than ‘strong’ banter (being called names) but there’s a sensible limit to my own behaviour too - I wouldn’t go into the County Ground Hotel with my city shirt on shouting ‘Inbreds and Roundabouts’ on a match day and expect to be bought a drink.....

There's definitely a fair few because when escorted from the pub outside the trainstation to the ground there's always a couple of windows displaying City shirts as we walk by.

I also remember after the game we lost 1-0 in our promotion season, people who lived local were trying to get out of the escort back and were denied.

There are indeed - but we respect the locals and don’t rub it in.

I grew up with a lot of Swindon fans and went to a school literally full of them. Much like yourself I don’t get much stick from them anymore! They hate us mind!

In my experience they hate the Gas more.
That baseball-bat attack in the pub on the Gloucester Road saw to that.

Surely not! They keep telling us they are loved by all and spoken of in reverential terms whenever and wherever people gather together to celebrate the beautiful game.

In my experience (I’ve lived here for 24 years) they hate Oxford most. There is history behind that rivalry - the Leyland car rivalry, but Oxford are the main rivals.
Next are either Reading or the Gas - they haven’t played against Reading for years so that may have waned a little.
They don’t like us at all, but they dislike the Gas more.
There is another team they hate - Portsmouth or Colchester I think - a Swindon fan was killed in an incident once after a game and they haven’t forgotten it (understandably)

@Shaun Taylorhave I got this right?

Yea me too, my dislike of them nowadays has if anything led to pity as the rivalry has eased off over the years.

Certainly saw us as much of a rival as Oxford though among the people I knew. Some of it envy

Going back several decades Swindon were our main rivals. The County ground is the away ground that I’ve been to more than any other, must be around 20/25 times. I got arrested there once for allegedly fighting and spent the night in the cells but was never charged.............:dunno:

Ive always disliked them and that hasn’t changed in 50 odd years!

I think there was a lot of envy for sure. The premier league season is still regularly mentioned mind ?

Swindon certainly isn't easy on the eye that's for sure.
I've lived in Swindon for the past 24 years. The main town centre was a concrete faceless sprawl when I arrived, but the nightlife around Fleet Street - the 'bottom of town' was good, but it's got steadily worse - most of the original bars and pubs have gone as the High Street deteriorated over the years. The appearance of the town has got worse, mainly (I believe) due to the council planners, who seem to be intent on destroying the very few remaining 'nice' architecture examples (Mechanics Institute and the Corn Exchange aka the Locarno) by their rigid restrictions on developing those sites. @Shaun Taylormight back me up on this?? The 'bottom of town' is now more like the 'Town's bottom' if you get my drift!!!
I actually live in Old Town (on top of the hill) which is quite nice to be fair - quite a few bars and restaurants and an old Victorian park with a bandstand, but you would only go to Old Town if you were deliberately visiting it - you wouldn't naturally pass through it coming from the M4 or the train station on your way to the County Ground - which is right next to the Red Light district, so not surprising it doesn't inspire many positive comments!!

As for the football club, they shot themselves in the foot years ago, when Honda wanted to sponsor them. Honda wanted their name to be all over the club and were willing to provide considerable funding, but they wanted to part-own the club and the board at the time were having none of it.

I'm not sure what the current crisis is exactly, but I know that Power is under investigation and everyone here hates him.

I personally miss playing them - it was the only City game I could actually WALK to!!!!!!!

Good post and a fair assessment and I can't  argue with anything you've written although you could add that Coate water, Lydiard Park, Mouldon Park, Stanton Park, Queens Park & Peatmoor lagoon are nice places to walk around and there are some nice houses if you travel 2/3 miles away from the Town Centre.

I would definitely say there is a lot of envy as you seemingly have it all money can buy and I for miss playing you guys and hatred has never entered my mind just friendly banter and yearn for the days when we can visit the new Ashton Gate but sadly it could be years before tha happens unless we get you in In a Cup match.

York Road chippie used to be the best ever but they’ve changed hands now. Big piece of fish (proper cod) with great chips.
I’ve been told it’s crap now but not tried it recently - trying to lose weight so avoiding fish & chips - the most calorific takeaway there is!!!!!

York Road used to be a great chippie and the owners were up at 6am every morning as they liked to prepare the fish they sold themselves. So near to the ground but hidden away so easily missed and if you want decent fish & chips you have to branch out to the suburbs as there's nothing of any interest close to the ground unless you want a 10/15 minute walk into Gorse Hill

I honestly can’t imagine anything coming close to matching York Road’s fish and chips.
I’ve been told about the Gorse Hill chippie - apparently that’s the guy who used to run the place right on the Magic Roundabout - but I haven’t tried it.
Like I said; we are trying to shed a bit of weight so giving the fish and chips a miss for now!!!!

Shortened version: anything outside Swindon is quite acceptable

I remember this match well. Swindon played good fast possession football and we were totally outclassed. Lucky to escape with the one nil defeat. Didn’t realise that Aden Flint played in that match!

Having lived in Swindon for 10 years now it really is a tip.

Have 3 children who were born at Swindon hospital but I see them as being 50% Bristolian and 50% from Trowbridge which I think is okay.

The Swindon Town robin came to my eldest’s school recently and she told the stupid bird that she was a Bristol city fan, which made him go rather quiet and didn’t speak to her again for the rest of the day.
