Signed as a player so contracted as such and ends up being a coach and Robins Tv's go to analyser.

Why not just get a fully qualified specialist coach it would've been a lot easier and probably cheaper.

Alternatively, we could just have re-signed Jody Morris to accompany Roger Malone.

Roger Malone now there's an icon? Forget his goalkeeping ability or lack of did you see anything in him to suggest he would become an assistant manager at quite a young age

The most non sensical staff member . Nice chap . Good luck . But what was that about .

He was assistant to the under 23s who romped their league with a team made up of 17 and 18 year olds and very rarely had 1st team players available because of long term injury.

But he was signed by us as a player, so got paid as such, even though there wasn’t a snowballs chance in hell of him actually ever playing.

He was on the subs bench just 4 times for 2 years wages as a player, not a coach.

My favourite (ridiculous) Post story was the one when they said we had signed him as Fielding’s replacement, so he comes in for a player who featured in the first team squad over 180 times, of course he was..

How do you know his wages matched that of a player rather than a coach?

I recall Holden saying they were giving it a go with him. They had no plan it was made up, he was there with nothing to do so they let him have a go. He was not signed for that job.Typical of the way the club was run. He was not kept on so any suggested success was not noted by those that count.

That’s fine if those that be haven’t noted that, however the comment was a “nonsensical staff member” and I was just pointing out he was involved with our u23 team that did very well this year.

I think it is pretty much common knowledge players (even League Two standard ones like Gilmartin) get paid far more than coaches.

He was still on a player contract with us (he signed for 2 years), so as @billywedlock says, Holden gave him a coaching job because the bizarre original plan, as some sort of permanent 3rd choice goalie who might sit on the bench occasionally was clearly just ridiculous, especially as Wollacott was also around for much of this season not playing much either.

We didn’t even bother to register him as a player in the season that’s just ended.

Hmmm....

I think one of us may be guilty of a 'whoosh' here.

Roger Malone (TV presenter) was not, to the best of my knowledge, a goalkeeper nor, again to the best of my knowledge, an aspiring football manager.

I was being slightly ironic as Roger was definitely biased towards Bristol City?

Don't care what anyone says, Roger Malone was class. Passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgable about West Country football. Heart in the right place.

Much prefer him to the bland sh1te $ky have left us with: commentators who can't pronounce players names, picking from a tombola of 20 or so stock phrases week in week out. "There are no easy games in the Championship." Really.? I'd beg to differ. And don't get me started on the have been/never were ex-pro's giving the colour commentary.

On Sunday football on HTV/Midlands I used to like Gerald Sinstadt

You mean like someone whose done their A licence for outfield and goalkeepers?

I said the reason we signed him above, Johnson wanted 4 keepers at all sessions and Max/Jojo were out on loan most the time

No; I mean signing a player who had absolutely no chance of playing at this level on a playing contract. Whether he's got his qualifications or not, why not just simply hire a coach?

All of which mudslinging leads me to wonder whatever became of the extraordinary sometime OTIB legend, Malone FM. Anyone know??

I seem to recall MaloneFM and Dr. Faustus being great entertainment. Seems both no longer exist on here. Hope all is well.

Presumably because no one would want to sign with no chance of playing so we signed someone like Gilmartin who was happy with that condition on comparatively low wages, as said repeatedly it was a player signed so Johnson could have his 4 senior goalkeepers at all sessions and allow Max/Jojo to go out on loan.

Liked him on Robins TV (from time to time).

But think it is best for all that he moves on.

Personally I would rather see City have a handful of 10/10 staff than a lot of 4-7/10 staff.  Bought in because they know some people in Ireland .... FFS.

If, as rumoured, he came in on £4k/week that's still a shitload of moolah for an effectively  non-playing member of staff.

Being why I added comparatively, for a club with a total wage bill we have, of course to fans it’s a huge amount but comparatively it’s not that much

Sounds like another instance of ridiculous over staffing to me, but what LJ wanted, LJ got, it seems.

I'll be looking out for how many goalkeepers Sunderland sign over the close season!

He was never going to be worth £208k per annum to City though was he, or anything like it.

If he really was on 4k per week here then it's probably the highest wage he'd had throughout his particularly undistinguished lower league career, apparently agreed by the club in the full knowledge he was unlikely to ever play a game for us.

That word keeps coming to mind - 'bizarre.'

Depends how highly Johnson valued having a 4th senior keeper around for training purposes, remember we were 7th when football was paused for Covid, for a team finishing bottom half no it probably wouldn't be worth it but if it allows you to run sessions the way you want and you're fighting for top 6 then perhaps there is a value to it, not for having Gilmartin singularly but the collective benefit it brings to the squad LJ being able to run training the way he wanted. Remember it also allowed Max/Jojo to go out on loan so its the value in their development as well Max now in every match squad, if no Gilmartin one of the two would have had to stay.

If he was on £4k p.w. he and his agent saw LJ / MA coming.  Unless his MA / Watford connections saw some little envelopes of the beige variety….allegedly. ???

I don't believe he was but don't have any proof to contradict what others have said
