Apparently the logic behind Trippier is to prevent Perisic cutting in. Makes sense, but a shame we’re being reactive rather than proactive.

He wouldn’t admit it, but we’re probably playing for a draw really in the hope we finish second. I predict quite a cagey game.

It's got draw written all over it.

I have no idea how Sancho doesn’t even get on the bench.

I'd rather see him than Sterling really. I can understand the pace rationale for having one of Rashford/Sterling/Sancho so not too many complaints about the front 3. Grealish is a great player to bring off the bench.

Makes me think there’s reasons for their absence other than tactical

Could be right, seems very odd.

Given what we have I don’t think it’s a terrible team but it does show where we are or more to the point what we lack.

Trippier at LB is odd but can only assume he wanted a set piece specialist in the team.

Trippier a reactive measure to counter Perisic apparently who likes to cut in, although I don't see any reason why Chilwell or Shaw wouldn't be able to deal with that. At full back, as it's such a specialist position, I believe it shouldn't be messed around with too much. Shaw and Chilwell have had good seasons so deserve to play.

I wonder whether we will try a couple of different systems, perhaps Phillips or Rice will drop into a back 3 with Walker and Trippier as wing backs. Both are more natural wing backs than Chilwell or Shaw so could also be an explanation.

Two holding midfielders. A RB who isn’t the best option going forward in the squad. A LB who is a RB. Not playing the guy who was Man of the Match in each of the friendlies only last week.

England will go nowhere under Southgate. There are 32 teams in this competition and England have at minimum the 6th best squad and probably a bit higher(Spain gone downhill, Italy on the up but still fancy England especially in attack). Only France, Germany and Belgium would I say are a step up. All that and setting up against Croatia as defensive as possible. They may play well and they may win because that is the talent the squad has but GS has not got this right

Sick and tired of trying to counter threats of the opposition, just play players in their natural positions and let them worry about our strengths

Fed up of Southgates negative approach

I'm probably in the minority but I agree on not playing Grealish

I prefer Mount and Foden, and having pace of Sterling gives us something different.

But I expect quite a bit of rotation so we could change a few of the attacking players next game and we could still be strong.

Finally some sense
