Fouls don't have to be deliberate.

No, but it should be a foul.

That wasn’t a foul.

The Ukrainian has clattered someone who just kicked a ball.

VAR completely skews it.

This is the type of sending off that makes my blood boil. Danielson has legitimately gone to clear the ball and done so but because he's on the stretch and falling back he has caught the onrushing player. There is absolutely no intent or malice in the challenge which is nothing more than an accidental coming together even if a player gets hurt. The modern game is too soft.

Couldn’t agree more.

Disgraceful decision.

You go to the laws of the game.

They say that a player image.gif.a0801f431d6a3eb6fb1cbcc6ea46eb77.gifis sent off if he commits, amongst other things, "serious foul play". That is defined as follows:

SERIOUS FOUL PLAY

A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

no difference to this. It was rescinded.

Very much different.

The Sweden player got to the ball a fraction before the Ukrainian one, but it was still dangerous play.

Balbuena's foot was following through from a regular kick.

When Shaw had his leg broken a few years back, that was an example of a good tackle but a freak accident, and IIRC no red was given.

Good job he didn’t lunge at the player and simply volleyed the ball ?

The two are very different?

The outcome determines whether it’s a foul?

1st one the Sweden player has studs showing at knee height in a 50/50.

He got there a fraction before the Ukraine player.

2nd one the Ukrainian player kicks the ball but catches the Swedish player who is sliding in with the followthrough.

The 2nd one is actually comparable to the Balbuena one, which was rescinded, the 1st one isn't.

The first one is a case of endangering the opponent, the second one is just a collision.

Outcome doesn't decide anything, I already referenced the Shaw broken leg a few years ago which was a pure freak accident but actually a really good tackle by the defender.
