I think so. He'd never admit it but obviously given the way the groups are structured he'd probably prefer to come second and avoid a harder tie upon qualifying. A draw and then two wins (whilst hoping Croatia do the same with better goal difference) is the best way of achieving this.

He also knows that losing would be a nightmare with all sorts of pressure loaded onto the Scotland game which will be really difficult IMO.

Yep. I'm not too worried about Scotland. I think man for man we're better in every position by quite a margin - only comparable position is LB where weirdly they've got two very strong players.

There is obviously the risk they raise their game like an FA cup tie against a heavy underdog, but I still think we will be too much for them.

I think they're better than you think and with an extremely astute coach.

If they play Chilwell and Shaw that means we will play a back 5 with Shaw as one of the CBs.

We have 3 known centre-backs in Coady, Mings and White although I guess Shaw has played in that position before.

Well we will see. I genuinely don't think any of their squad bar Robertson and perhaps Tierney would get into ours, even with our weaknesses at CB. I rate McTominay but think Rice is better. Likewise McGinn.

Billy Gilmour is an exciting talent though, really like the look of him.

Remember we had Ayling Flint and Williams? One proper centre back with full backs tucked in either side. Then Little and Bryan further forward as wing backs.  If we play a 4 with Mings it will mean he will either be exposed when the left back pushes forward or the full back will be hindered going forward as he is protecting that side.

Scotland do this to incorporate Tierney and Robertson.  Seems logical enough to me.

If it's a back 5 it'll be to offer more mobility and allow the LWB to push further forward with Shaw slotting into LB during those passages of play. It'll be the same on the right with Walker if he's used as a CB. They wouldn't be able to do that really with Coady/Mings/White.

It's similar to how we used Ayling in our double winning season. He would be the ball carrier and slot in at RB when Little or Tavernier pushed forward. The system if fairly fluid in that way.

I think that the advantage Steve Clarke has over Gareth Southgate , is that he knows his best starting 11. I'm not sure that Gareth knows his yet.

I think that's mainly due to injuries to Maguire and Henderson.  Especially Maguire.

5 subs means it's a matter of starters rather than your best 11. Henderson will be coming off the bench if we're winning games for the last 20 I'm sure

I am quite interested to see how Scotland get on and whether they can get past the group stages in a competition for the first time ever after many attempts. On paper they have some good players but the only time I watched them recently was a game against Israel where they were probably 2nd best. Personally I think England will beat them comfortably and can see them picking up 1 or 2 pts only from their other games. That Czech game first up is key for them, I could be proven wrong very quickly if they perform in that.

Yep that is true. I often talk about 04-06 as I think this is our best squad since that era. From 04-06 it was fairly straightforward - we knew that Owen/Rooney/Beckham/Scholes/Gerrard/Lampard/Cole/Rio/Terry/Campbell would pretty much be nailed on starters. I think our squad depth now makes that trickier though. I am not sure who we can say would be guaranteed starters in 2021 from the 2018 squad aside from Kane, Henderson, Maguire, Stones.

I think in some areas we actually have better squad depth than 04-06 - but not within the spine of team and especially not at CB.

Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. Plus don't forget the media & ex player  clamour for Jack Grealish to be included

I think in the instance of that particular player, rightly so. Very gifted and a game changer.

So do I. I have a feeling Southgate will favour Rashford and Sterling. Him making Rashford captain for the friendly was quite telling I think.

Surely not. This is the England manager that said he would “pick on form”. Grealish has been our best player the last 5 times he has pulled on an England shirt and Foden has been irresistible for Man City and often favoured by Pep over Sterling.

Sterling and Rashford both in very indifferent form, lacking goals for their clubs and neither has a major tournament goal - 0 in 12 for Sterling.

The Scotland game will likely be a nightmare. England always struggle against other home nations.

I think we have a good squad............the only issue i have is, Mings is an accident waiting to happen at International level IMHO and James Ward Prowse should be in the squad, he is the best English dead ball specialist in the Prem. and in a tight game he would/could make the difference.

Nailed on starters then!

I really hope so, I just have a bad feeling about it.

Quite glad our first game is Croatia, I think it will give us an example if/how we've progressed since last tournament and they've regressed with aging players. Still a very strong opponent, and we shouldn't be annoyed to lose to them. But I imagine if we beat them it'll be a huge huge confidence boost

You know we're going to need other results to go our way on the final fixtures of the group stages and hope we scrap a 1-0 win to qualify. It's just the England way, reckon we could go all the way this time though. Not sure about Rashford and Sterling, be brave to start the players in form instead.

Think we have a hard group and then likely a a very hard game in the last 16. Still not overly convinced by Southgate and how we have played against half decent opposition under him. So think I am one of the few with quite low expectations. Obviously hope I'm proven wrong.

Hardly a glowing prediction :( I guess it reflects the very tough draw we have

Pretty much, they have us as favourites to top the group and interestingly you can see percentages wise we’re a fair bit more likely than Croatia to make last 16 whereas there’s minimal difference in making the quarter final reflected in the likely easier draw in the last 16 for our groups runners up, unsporting but if you could manufacture finishing second it would be well worth doing so

Not just Mings. Stones has a long history of dropping clangers. Pickford is good with his feet but also commits the odd howler.

I just don't trust our defence and feel that Southgate stifles our attack too. So, all in all, not expecting us to get that far.

People’s predictions for the the starting 11 on Sunday. Read a couple of articles Shaw could start centre back. Shows the lack of depth in that position if true.

Usually there are 8-9 players nailed on but I think selection is quite open for Sunday.

IF he does go Shaw in a back 3 I think that would raise more questions than it gives answers. For example, playing a back 3 even with your best CB out yet only one of the other 4 CB’s he’s taken would feature in that. Seems a little odd. Perhaps Mings played his way out of contention the last 2 games?

Southgate had to make a big call on this though and Mings in particular. I was saying to a mate the other day that based off his last two displays if he wasn’t concerned about Mings now I would be worried. He’s just not up to it unfortunately. I would love to see him do well but he’s not international class.

My friend who reads everything there is to read on football and really understands the game believes he's going to go..

Pickford

Walker, Stones, Shaw

James                                        Chilwell

Rice, Bellingham

Mount - Kane - Grealish

I can't see him playing that front 3 as it would be, relatively speaking, pretty slow. I suspect he will play 1 of Rashford/Sterling/Sancho to try and stretch the opposition. I also would be surprised if he goes with both fullbacks at CB. I think it's more likely he will play White and perhaps Walker at RWB due to his pace.
