Someone told me that the cream acted like butter and therefore the cream came first. Am I being uncouth to think that this makes some kind of sense? Or are you just posh enough to know how to do it properly? I wonder how the Royal family would do it.

Lanterne Rouge
Butter, jam then cream is the only sensible answer. Anything else is just for freaks, weirdos and wrong `uns generally.

RoystonFoote'snephew
For me it's cream then jam but there's no right way unless you're from Devon or Cornwall.
Eddie Hitler
You should anyway be using a split (soft enriched bread roll) rather than a scone. And of course the cream goes on top; unless you are using inferior clotted cream like that stuff Devonners produce and so try to hide it under the jam. Robbored
According to a Devonian lady who makes her own scones asked me if I’d put butter on top of jam, explaining that in Devon they see the cream as butter. Fact is - it doesn’t really matter. Scones with cream and jam are yummy whichever way.

That is definitely frowned upon unless you bring enough for everyone 2) Cream vs Jam doesn’t matter unless you’re in Devon or Cornwall. 3) Definitely jam first, then cream. No butter. 4) watch out for bastard wasps
