Apparently due to take over at palace. Strange appointment.

Big gamble

It’s no more of a gamble than appointing Dean Holden?! Seriously though, Vieira has some interesting experience - he was head of youth development at Man City before being appointed as the manager of their ‘Elite Development Squad’ (basically their reserves!) and then he took over at New York City - took them from 17th to a 4th placed finish and then a 2nd placed finish in his two seasons there - interestingly his first signing for New York was Jack Harrison - and that was before Man City snapped him up, so PV obviously has an eye for a player.

Then he went to Nice and took them to a 7th placed finish in his first season in charge, which was an improvement for the club on their previous season.

So he has management experience in three different countries and has been relatively successful. Not so strange then? He has an infinitely better CV than most of our club’s zillion managers between Coppell and Pearson...

Been a very odd summer in terms of managerial appointments, especially in the Prem.

Tottenham, Everton & Palace have all struggled to bring someone in, whilst in our division West Brom had their issues, too.

As for Vieira he does seem a big risk, his spells in France & America were ok, though I’m sure Nice were struggling when he left so you cannot avoid the conclusion that someone with less of a stellar playing career wouldn’t be getting the chance.

It’s a strange appointment in the sense of Palace have known Hodgson was leaving for a while. Clearly, Vieira wasn’t their first choice as if he was he would have been appointed much earlier.
Agree with @WirralRobinit has the feel of De Boer about it.

Seems strange that so many clubs are struggling to appoint their first choice manager, Celtic, Spurs and Palace

The common factor seems to be that candidates are being told they won't have big money to spend. Certainly appears to be why Conte turned down Spurs (and why he left Inter) and why Favre changed his mind at the last minute about joining Palace.

That is a good point - managers used to actively seek out roles in this country, they couldn't wait to get over here, now, as you say, some big clubs just can’t get their preferred choices.

However, first choice isn’t always best, after all, David Jason wasn’t the first choice actor to be Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses and Nicholas Lyndhurst wasn’t the first choice actor to be Rodney - but can you imagine that programme without them if the ones who topped the lists had taken those roles?!

Listened to a bit of Simon Jordan on Talksport yesterday when Jim White threw Viera’s pending appointment  at him as “breaking news” and asked for his reaction.

SJ described it as a “brave appointment” after the succession of experienced managers that have bought Palace premier league stability. Reacting to more experienced managers not being in the frame for this and other jobs recently, SJ speculated that perhaps in the current situation experienced managers are being put off when owners tell them what funds are/are not available.
