Not wanting Gerland to win

Supporting the other side is actually a good topic.

Got to be honest, I used to think it was hilarious that Tim Henman never won Wimbledon. The middle class hysteria used to wind me right up.

There were people saying on this forum that they wanted City to get smashed so that LJ would be sacked.

I think the OP was just trying to stir up some interesting debate. I doubt he really wants England to lose. The insults against him are out of order and perhaps illustrate part of the point he was trying to make.

I think you're being overly generous to the OP, I love a football debate as much as the next fan but in my opinion the OP's statement is a purely political shit stirring comment. There is a separate OTIB forum for Political Discussion and I would suggest the OP post on there.

What a horrible thing for the OP to say. Imagine what victory would do for this country's morale.

Xenophobic nationalists bark loudly, but at the end of the day, are a rather small percentage of England's population. I don't give a damn if they tried to use a tournament success for political gain.. Let them try, their voices would be drowned out by the rest of us simply celebrating what would be a fantastic achievement.

Trevor Francis?

I always confused Trevor Francis with Jasper Carrot. Perhaps they were really the same person with the Francis persona playing football by day and Carrot doing stand up comedy by night.

Sounds like a bizarre Brummie superhero.

By day Carrotman fights crime via the beautiful game, but at night he kills people.....with laughter!

Why the assumption that the OP is English?

We know we have Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Swedish, Bulgarian, Rumanian etc. City fans who post on here.

Not everyone likes England, even if they support City.

If he is English he's an odd bod imo.

So you would take an England defeat just so a handful of ex-players stop talking up the team/Southgate? Wow, that’s as bad as the OP!

And why the hell should Southgate’s personality have anything to do with it?
He is paid to pick an England side, tactics, win games, win tournaments…..Holloway has a personality, would you rather he be England manager?

I’m not his biggest fan and the start of the tournament wasn’t great but we have always been slow starters and if he goes on to win this he will be the most successful England manager in over 50 years…..regardless of his philosophy or personality

No, read the post I said I want us to win. I'm just bemoaning that while I've traditionally preferred BBC sports coverage they've put together the most sycophantic boring panel.

For balance, it's not just Johnson either..............Sir Kier jumping on the same "this should win me a few votes back from those Red Wall Northern scoundrels" bandwagon and even a few of the Corbynista are trying to fool people that they are normal, salt of the earth football lads and lasses, in a pub and not a single pint (or any other drink for that matter) to be seen.........not ONE of them, Labour or Tory, could name a player that plays for, say, Birmingham City, not one of them.

As for Rashford, comes across as a great lad with fantastic principles BUT personally I think he would do well to put the politics to one side just for a little bit and remember he gets paid an ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE amount of wedge to be a top level professional footballer. Don't forget the day job that gives you the opportunity and the platform to make a difference in other ways and let's see some FOOTBALL that matches the top dollar wages you are paid, like we're seeing from Sterling, Maguire, Phillips, Rice, Kane, Grealish etc.

Kier Starmer is a season ticket holder at Arsenal, he’s not jumping on a bandwagon he’s as much a football fan as you or I.

Also what relevance does knowing a Birmingham player make? I don’t think I could name one as I don’t pay attention to them.

The photo on Starmers Twitter shows him with a half drunken pint, again not sure what relevance that has though

I could name plenty from the past ( e.g. Bob Latchford, Trevor Hockey, Bert Murray) but haven’t got a clue about their current squad.

Everyone seems to be presuming that the OP is a 40-something English male living alone with his cat. Could be a 25-year old female Swedish high-jumper.

Nil points in the Eurovision is surely a reason to be proud?

Am I the only one who is hoping Gerland don't win this. It will be the perfect excuse for chest pumping xenophobic brexiteers to tell us how fantastic Gerland is and how s**t Europe is. Depressing.

Let it go. I'm not a fan of Brexit either, but life moves on. There will be a minority of people who make it an England v Europe thing, just as there will be a minority who are rooting against their own country because of some warped political battle that's still going on in their heads. The referendum was 5 years ago, you're within your rights to be against it and want back in to the EU, but praying for England to get knocked out is a strange way to deal with it.

On a related note to this thread, has anyone else noticed how good England have got since they started embracing revolutionary socialism and cultural marxism?

Our problem on the left has been solved in one fell swoop by Luke "Che Guevara" Shaw and our football has improved massively since Southgate swapped the tactics blackboard for the Gramscian Theory of Hegemony and a copy of Peter Kroptokin's "The Conquest of Bread".

Every England win is a victory for the proletariat!

The point being BOTH groups are as idiotic, pathetic, one eyed, lacking understanding of other people's views and are as downright boring, tedious and intolerant as each other.................

I was just responding to a post regarding politicians making mileage out of football.......and they do tbf.

I'll be honest I am surprised so many people seem unable to name a player from a bog standard team in the league we play in which is ironic when those same people will be, after coming on this forum making a season full of postings slagging off people whose job it will be to know every player and/or combination of players that Birmingham might put out against us, professing to be some kind of football guru. If I've got Kier Starmer wrong then fair enough but I wouldn't mind betting that Owen Jones and his merry little gang don't have many season tickets between them.
